Camping near Haldimand County, Ontario
Haldimand County sits on the north shore of Lake Erie in southern Ontario, roughly an hour south of Hamilton and within reach of Niagara Falls. The Grand River winds through the county on its way to the lake, which shapes where campgrounds cluster: along the river near Cayuga and Caledonia, and along the Erie shoreline near Selkirk and Nanticoke.
RV renters have a mix of options. Sun Retreats Cayuga is a seasonal RV resort along more than 1,000 feet of Grand River shoreline, offering RV and tent sites with hookups, a dump station, laundry facilities, a pool and splash pad, and a playground. Bruce's Landing RV Resort, Knight's Beach Resort, and Maitland Shore RV Park round out the private-park side, most operating as seasonal resorts geared to RV travellers and families.
For a provincial-park experience, Selkirk Provincial Park sits about 15 minutes east of Port Dover on the Lake Erie shoreline. It offers quiet grassed campsites, the Wheeler's Walk Trail with a boardwalk across a marsh wetland, and a large day-use picnic area.
Things to do near Haldimand County
The Grand River is the county's outdoor centrepiece. Paddling, shoreline fishing, and cycling along Highway 54 between Cayuga and Caledonia are popular, and riverside resorts like Sun Retreats Cayuga put guests directly on the water for fishing and swimming.
On the Lake Erie side, Selkirk Provincial Park offers a small pebbly beach with a gradual drop-off in the day-use area and the Wheeler's Walk Trail, a route that runs along Sandusk Creek and through a white pine plantation. The area is a popular birding spot during spring and fall migration, and paddlers can head through the marsh out to the mouth of Sandusk Creek.
Off-site, Ruthven Park National Historic Site near Cayuga, Toronto Motorsports Park, and the Port Dover waterfront are all short drives. Niagara Falls is under an hour east, which makes Haldimand County a practical base for a longer regional trip.

The camping season in Haldimand County is shaped by Ontario's climate and provincial-park calendar. Selkirk Provincial Park is open from mid-May to mid-October. Private RV resorts in the area follow a similar window; Sun Retreats Cayuga operates as a seasonal resort from roughly May through October.
July and August are peak season. Lake Erie warms enough for swimming, thunderstorms are more common, and weekends book out well in advance. Reservations should be made well ahead for weekend stays during July and August, when parks are busiest. Late spring and early fall are quieter, cooler, and better for shoulder-season trips, though nights can drop close to freezing in May and October.
Winter camping is not offered locally. Selkirk is closed outside the operating season, and lake-effect flurries can affect driving from December through March. Most RV travellers plan trips between mid-May and mid-October.

We had a great trip in Grundy using Pete’s StarCraft trailer! Pete was very helpful getting us all setup and the trailer worked perfect for us.
Derek J. - Aug 2026
Peter was easy to communicate with, very thorough in explaining to us who had never used a camper trailer before, how to use the the features and how to properly set up and maintain the trailer. He was flexible for pick up and drop off of the trailer which was greatly considerate for us since we had a slight change in our plans where we had to return early for work but gave us the time to return the trailer after our workday. I would 10/10 rent from him again!

How to book campgrounds near Haldimand County
Selkirk Provincial Park is reserved through the Ontario Parks reservation system at reservations.ontarioparks.ca. Reservations are accepted up to five months in advance of the arrival date, and new inventory opens at 7:00 a.m. Eastern Time. Reservations must be made in the name of the person who will occupy and be responsible for the campsite, and the permit holder must be at least sixteen years old.
Private resorts, including Sun Retreats Cayuga, Bruce's Landing RV Resort, Knight's Beach Resort, and Maitland Shore RV Park, book directly through their own websites or by phone. Many of these parks carry a large share of seasonal sites, so the pool of transient nightly sites is smaller than at a provincial park; booking early for holiday weekends is essential.
For an RV rental, confirm site length, hookup type, and whether pull-through access is available before booking.
What to expect on the ground
Sites in the area vary widely. At Selkirk Provincial Park, most campsites in Areas 2 and 4 can accommodate larger trailers, are pull-through, and offer electrical hookups. A central comfort station in Area 2 has flush toilets, showers, and laundry facilities, water taps are located throughout all four campground areas, and Areas 1, 3, and 4 rely on vault toilets. There is a single dump station and trailer sanitation station in a loop off Campground 2 near the park entrance.
Private resorts typically offer more infrastructure. Full water, electric, and sewer hookups, on-site pools, playgrounds, and Wi-Fi are common at parks such as Sun Retreats Cayuga.
Cell service is generally usable along the main highways but can be spotty at riverside and lakeshore sites. Bring insect repellent for wetland areas, and expect gravel or grass pads rather than paved sites at most parks.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Haldimand County, ON
How much does an RV rental in Haldimand County cost?
RV rental in Haldimand County is one of the most affordable ways to explore Ontario's Lake Erie shoreline. On RVezy, travel trailers typically start around $100 to $175 CAD per night, while Class C motorhomes range from roughly $200 to $325 CAD per night, with Class A units higher. Prices peak in July and August when Lake Erie beaches and Grand River paddling are busiest, so booking a mid-week trip in June or September can save you 20 to 30 percent. Pro tip: filter for Instant Book and look for hosts in Dunnville, Cayuga, or Caledonia to find a cheap RV rental Haldimand County travellers love, plus you'll cut delivery distance to Selkirk Provincial Park.
tourismhaldimand.ca/What licence do I need to rent an RV in Haldimand County, Ontario?
Good news: a regular Ontario G class driver's licence (or your home province/state equivalent) is all you need to rent an RV in Haldimand County. No special RV licence, air brake endorsement, or commercial licence is required for the motorhomes, campervans, and travel trailers on RVezy. You'll need to be 25 or older, and ID verification happens right inside the RVezy platform when you book, so there's nothing to print or mail. Visiting from outside Canada? Bring your home licence plus an International Driving Permit from your local auto club, usually under $25, and you're cleared to cruise the Talbot Trail along Lake Erie's north shore.
ontario.ca/page/driver-licence-categoriesIs my Haldimand County RV rental covered if something happens?
Every booking on RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can focus on the Lake Erie sunsets instead of worst-case scenarios. The protection plan covers damage to the RV during your trip, and you choose your coverage level at checkout, not the host. Different tiers offer different damage responsibility amounts, giving renters real financial peace of mind whether you are parked at Selkirk Provincial Park or rolling through Cayuga. Pro tip: drivers new to towing often pick the highest tier for their first Haldimand County RV trip because it lowers the damage responsibility amount the most.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if I need to cancel my RV rental in Haldimand County?
Booking is low-risk: RVezy sets the cancellation policy for every rental, not individual hosts, and there is a money-back grace period right after you book to give you breathing room. Refund eligibility after that window depends on how far out from your trip you are and whether a covered event disrupts plans, which can matter in this region given the occasional Lake Erie storm. Full cancellation details are available in the RVezy Help Center, and customer support is available before, during, and after every Haldimand County RV trip. Pro tip: lock in your preferred dates early for summer weekends at Rock Point or Selkirk, since those book up fast.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a Haldimand County RV trip?
Absolutely, and Haldimand is a fantastic region for four-legged co-pilots. To find a pet-friendly RV rental Haldimand County hosts offer, just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy and you'll see motorhomes and trailers that welcome dogs (some hosts allow cats too). Once you arrive, Rock Point Provincial Park near Dunnville has a designated pet beach and pet-friendly trails, and the Waterfront Trail through Selkirk and Peacock Point is leashed-dog friendly with plenty of shaded sections along Lake Erie. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm any pet fee and to ask about a secure tie-out at the campsite, then pack a tick-prevention plan since rural Ontario has active tick season May through October.
ontarioparks.ca/park/rockpointCan the RV be delivered to my campsite in Haldimand County?
Yes, RV delivery in Haldimand County is one of the easiest ways to skip the stress of towing or driving a big rig. Many RVezy hosts will drive the RV directly to popular spots like Selkirk Provincial Park, Rock Point Provincial Park, Haldimand Conservation Area in Nanticoke, or Byng Island Conservation Area in Dunnville, then level it, hook up water and power, and walk you through every system before they leave. Use the delivery filter on RVezy and enter your destination to see hosts who service that location and their delivery fee (usually based on distance). Pro tip: delivery is gold for first time renting an RV travellers because you arrive to a fully set up campsite and can focus on the Lake Erie beach.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Haldimand%20County%2C%20OntarioHow many kilometres do I get with my RV rental, and where can I go?
Most RVezy hosts in Haldimand County include a daily kilometre allowance (often 100 to 200 km per day) with the option to add more, and some offer RV rental with unlimited mileage, which is ideal for longer road trips. From central Haldimand (Cayuga), you are roughly 45 km to Niagara Falls, 70 km to Hamilton, 90 km to Port Dover, 150 km to Toronto, and about 200 km to Long Point Provincial Park, so a typical week of exploring rarely pushes past a standard package. Pro tip: if you are planning an RV road trip from Haldimand County out to Prince Edward County (about 350 km east), filter for unlimited-km hosts up front and you will save on overage fees.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Haldimand%20County%2C%20OntarioWhere are the best campgrounds to stay near Haldimand County?
You are spoiled for choice for RV camping in Haldimand County. Selkirk Provincial Park sits right on Lake Erie with electrical sites, a sandy beach, and birding boardwalks. Rock Point Provincial Park near Dunnville features a long sandy beach and fossil shelves visible at low water. Haldimand Conservation Area in Nanticoke offers lakefront sites with electrical hookups, and Byng Island Conservation Area in Dunnville has a large outdoor pool plus full-service RV sites along the Grand River. Pro tip: Ontario Parks reservations open five months in advance to the day through the Ontario Parks reservation system, and Selkirk lakeview loops fill quickly for the July long weekend, so set a calendar reminder.
reservations.ontarioparks.ca/When is the best time of year for an RV trip to Haldimand County?
Late May through early October is prime time, with July and August delivering the warmest Lake Erie swimming (water temps around 22 to 24°C) and daytime highs of 25 to 28°C. June is the sweet spot for fewer crowds and blooming Carolinian forest, while September brings warm days, cool sleeping nights around 12°C, and the start of fall fishing on the Grand River. Most provincial parks in the area run mid-May through Canadian Thanksgiving in mid-October. Pro tip: shoulder season (early June and mid-September) is when locals book their RV camping Haldimand County weekends, because nightly RV rates drop, campsites are easier to grab, and you'll still get plenty of beach weather.
climate.weather.gc.ca/climate_normals/index_e.htmlI've never rented an RV before. Will I actually be able to drive one in Haldimand County?
You've got this, and Haldimand County is honestly one of the friendliest places in Ontario to learn. Roads here are flat, lightly trafficked, and well-marked, with Highway 3 (the Talbot Trail) and Highway 6 forming easy spines through the region. Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on orientation at pickup covering driving, hookups, slide-outs, and dumping, plus you can text them during your trip with questions. Many first time renting an RV travellers choose a Class C motorhome or a small travel trailer for easier handling. Pro tip: do your first 30 minutes of driving on the quiet country concessions between Cayuga and Selkirk before tackling busier roads near Hamilton, and you'll feel confident fast.
ontario.ca/page/driving-and-roadsWhat happens if the RV breaks down during my Haldimand County trip?
You are never stranded. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, so one phone call brings help whether you have a flat tire on Highway 3 near Dunnville, a dead battery at Haldimand Conservation Area, or need a tow on the way back to Caledonia. You will also have your host's direct contact for quick troubleshooting on quirks specific to their RV (most issues are simple fixes like a tripped GFCI or a propane valve). Pro tip: save the RVezy support number and your host's number in your phone before you leave the pickup driveway, and snap a photo of the RV's VIN and plate so you have it handy if you ever need to call in.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat are popular RV road trip routes from Haldimand County?
An RV road trip from Haldimand County opens up some of Ontario's best scenery. Head east about 90 km to Niagara Falls and Niagara-on-the-Lake wine country, west along the Talbot Trail to Long Point Biosphere Reserve, north about 80 km to Elora Gorge for cliff-lined paddling, or southwest to Point Pelee National Park, Canada's southernmost mainland. Cross-border travel into the US (Buffalo via the Peace Bridge is just 100 km east) is allowed on many RVezy rentals, but you must confirm with the host in advance so coverage applies. Travel into Mexico is not permitted. Pro tip: build in a stop at Port Dover for a perch dinner on the way west, it is a local rite of passage.
cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/travel-voyage/menu-eng.htmlHow much should I budget for fuel on a Haldimand County RV trip?
Fuel is one of the bigger trip costs, but Haldimand's short driving distances keep it manageable. Class B campervans typically get 18 to 24 L/100 km, Class C motorhomes 22 to 30 L/100 km, and larger Class A or towing setups 28 to 40 L/100 km. With Ontario gas prices recently around $1.50 to $1.65 CAD per litre, a week of local touring (around 500 km) in a Class C runs roughly $180 to $250 in fuel. Pro tip: fill up in Cayuga, Hagersville, or Caledonia rather than at highway-adjacent Hamilton stations, where prices often jump 5 to 10 cents per litre, and you'll stretch your cheap RV rental Haldimand County budget further.
ontario.ca/page/gasoline-pricesHow far in advance should I book a campground in Haldimand County?
For Ontario Parks campgrounds like Selkirk and Rock Point, book exactly five months ahead of your arrival date at 7 a.m. Eastern through the Ontario Parks reservation system, that's the magic window for waterfront and electrical sites in July and August. Conservation areas like Haldimand Conservation Area (Long Point Region Conservation Authority) and Byng Island (Grand River Conservation Authority) use their own online booking systems and tend to open in late winter for the upcoming season. Pro tip: for a last-minute Haldimand County RV trip, mid-week (Sunday to Thursday) sites are often available even in peak summer, especially at Haldimand Conservation Area near Selkirk, where 228 sites give you better odds than the smaller provincial parks.
reservations.ontarioparks.ca/What are driving conditions like in Haldimand County?
Easy and forgiving, which is exactly what you want in an RV. Haldimand is mostly flat farmland and lakeshore with two-lane country highways like Highway 3, Highway 6, and Highway 54 along the Grand River, plus quiet rural concession roads with light traffic. Watch for slow-moving farm equipment in summer, horse-drawn buggies in the Mennonite areas north of Hagersville, and the occasional sandy shoulder near Lake Erie. Hamilton's urban traffic is the only real challenge nearby and it's avoidable. Winter brings lake-effect snow squalls off Lake Erie from December to February, so most RV trips run May through October. Pro tip: download offline Google Maps before you go because cell coverage drops briefly along some shoreline roads between Selkirk and Peacock Point.
511on.ca/What facilities will I find at Haldimand County campgrounds?
Most campgrounds in the region are well-equipped for RVs. Selkirk Provincial Park offers electrical sites (15/30 amp), flush toilets, showers, a trailer sanitation station, and potable water fill stations. Rock Point Provincial Park has electrical sites, comfort stations, and a dump station near the entrance. Haldimand Conservation Area in Nanticoke offers electrical hookups, water fills, and dump facilities, and Byng Island in Dunnville has full-service sites including some with sewer hookups. Pro tip: top up fresh water and empty tanks at your campground's dump station before checkout, because in-town dump options between sites are limited, and your RVezy host will appreciate the RV returning ready to roll for the next guest.
ontarioparks.ca/park/selkirkWhat's actually inside the RVs available in Haldimand County?
Expect a fully equipped home on wheels. Most RVs on RVezy in this region sleep 4 to 8 with real beds (queen masters are standard in Class C and travel trailers), a kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave, and sink, a bathroom with toilet and shower, air conditioning, furnace, and seatbelted seating for travel. Many include a TV, some have built-in generators or solar, and Wi-Fi is occasionally offered (cell-based hotspots work well across most of Haldimand). Pro tip: check the listing's amenity list and photos carefully, then message the host to confirm specifics like a coffee maker, BBQ, or outdoor chairs. Those little extras turn a campervan rental Haldimand County booking into a true vacation rather than a glorified tent.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Haldimand%20County%2C%20OntarioWhat add-ons can I get, and how do pickup and dropoff work?
Hosts on RVezy offer a menu of add-ons that make your motorhome rental Haldimand County booking turnkey: linens and bedding packages, kitchen kits, BBQs, bike racks, generators, camping chairs, kayaks, and pet packages are all common. Pickup is usually at the host's home in towns like Cayuga, Dunnville, Hagersville, or Caledonia, where they will give you a 30 to 60 minute walkthrough. Many also offer delivery to your campsite or driveway for a distance-based fee. Mileage policies and any pet, generator, or cleaning fees appear right on the listing before you book. Pro tip: ask about a propane top-up add-on. Propane heats your water, fridge, and furnace, and starting with full tanks means no scrambling on a Sunday in rural Ontario.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Haldimand%20County%2C%20OntarioHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is straightforward and handled entirely through RVezy, no cash or e-transfers to hosts. You will pay your booking total (rental, protection plan, and fees) by credit card when you book. A refundable security deposit is held separately from the booking payment and is pre-authorized on your card before pickup, then released after the RV is returned in the condition you got it. Pro tip: do a thorough walkaround video with your host at pickup and dropoff. Timestamped photos of the exterior, tanks, and fuel gauge make any deposit question quick to resolve and protect your wallet on every RV rental Ontario travellers book.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I take my RV across the border into the United States from Haldimand County?
Cross-border travel into the US is possible on many RVezy rentals (Buffalo is just 100 km east via the Peace Bridge, and Detroit is about 350 km west), but it must be approved by your host in advance and reflected on your booking so the protection plan applies. Bring your passport and vehicle documents to present at the Canada Border Services Agency and US Customs and Border Protection. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy rental. Pro tip: if you are planning a Niagara Falls overnight, the Canadian side has excellent RV-friendly parks like Niagara Falls KOA, so you can enjoy the view without dealing with border lineups, then save the US crossing for a longer trip.
