Lambton Shores camping overview
Lambton Shores sits on the southeast shore of Lake Huron in southwestern Ontario, roughly a two-and-a-half hour drive from Toronto and about an hour from Sarnia. The municipality includes Grand Bend, Port Franks, and the Ipperwash area, and it centers on a long stretch of freshwater sand beach that draws RV travelers from May through the Labour Day weekend.
The headline campground is Pinery Provincial Park, a large Ontario Parks property with about 10 kilometres of Lake Huron shoreline, oak savanna, and rolling sand dunes. Its three main campgrounds, Riverside, Dunes, and Burley, offer a mix of electrical, non-electrical, and pull-through sites, and Area 1 of Riverside stays open year-round.
Private options fill in around the park. Sun Retreats Ipperwash sits near Ipperwash Beach with rental cabins and RV and tent sites, Carolinian Forest Family Campground offers wooded sites in the same corridor, and Our Ponderosa, a Parkbridge Cottage and RV Resort, rounds out the choices with a family-oriented resort layout.
Things to do near Lambton Shores
The Lake Huron beach is the main attraction. Pinery Provincial Park has roughly 10 kilometres of sand shoreline with dunes, shallow swimming areas, and a designated dog beach at day-use area P1. Sunsets over the lake draw campers to the shore each evening.
On the land side, Pinery has ten hiking trails, a 14 kilometre bike trail, and canoe, kayak, corcl, and paddleboard rentals on the Old Ausable Channel, a provincially significant wetland with strong birding. The park has recorded more than 300 bird species over the years.
Off-park, families head into Grand Bend for the main-street beach, mini-golf, ice cream, and the Huron Country Playhouse, and to wineries and cider houses in the surrounding Huron County countryside.

The busy camping season runs from the May long weekend, Victoria Day, through Labour Day in early September. Pinery Provincial Park sees heavy traffic during this window, with long lines at the main gate on summer weekends and re-entry queues after leaving the park. Summer sites at Pinery are typically booked well in advance.
Fall is a strong shoulder season. September and October bring cooler temperatures, thinner crowds, and fall colour through the oak savanna. The Dunes and Burley campgrounds at Pinery operate from May to September, so late-season stays shift to Riverside.
Winter camping is available at Pinery. Area 1 of Riverside stays open year-round, heated yurts are bookable in all seasons, and the park grooms about 38 kilometres of cross-country ski trails when snow conditions allow. Most private parks in the Lambton Shores area close for the off-season, so winter RVers should confirm operating dates with the operator before booking.

How to book a Lambton Shores campsite
Pinery Provincial Park is reserved through the Ontario Parks reservation service, online or by phone at 1-888-ONT-PARK. The booking window opens five months ahead of the arrival date at 7 a.m. Eastern time, and summer weekends and yurts commonly fill the day they become available. If a preferred date shows sold out, checking back for cancellations is worthwhile, and availability notifications can alert campers when a matching site opens.
Private campgrounds such as Sun Retreats Ipperwash, Carolinian Forest Family Campground, and Our Ponderosa, a Parkbridge Cottage and RV Resort, are booked directly through each operator's own website or by phone. Many of these parks also carry seasonal, long-term sites, so overnight and short-stay inventory is more limited than the total site count suggests.
What to expect on arrival
At Pinery, expect a gated entry with a main checkpoint plus a second gatehouse at each campground. Lines can be long on Friday afternoons and long-weekend arrivals, and cell service inside the park is inconsistent, so downloading maps and confirmation numbers in advance is a good idea.
Sites vary in tree cover and privacy. Riverside sits along the Old Ausable Channel and is closest to the park store, rentals, and Visitor Centre. Dunes is a short walk to the beach, and Burley is the furthest from the main gate but tucked between mature pines. All three campgrounds have central comfort stations with flush toilets, showers, and laundry. The park has only two trailer sanitation stations, so dump-station lines can be long on checkout mornings.
Raccoons are common and can be bold, so food and coolers should be stored inside the RV. Poison ivy grows along some trails, and biting flies can appear near the beach on humid days.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Lambton Shores, ON
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Lambton Shores?
An RV rental in Lambton Shores typically runs between $150 and $300 CAD per night, with travel trailers on the lower end and Class A or Class C motorhomes on the higher end. Because Grand Bend and Pinery are peak summer destinations, you'll save the most by booking mid-week, choosing late May, June, or September dates, or filtering for hosts with longer-trip discounts. Many owners also include extras like bedding, camp chairs, or BBQs at no charge. Pro tip: a cheap RV rental in Lambton Shores is easier to find if you can be flexible on RV type, a travel trailer delivered to your Pinery campsite often beats the cost of a drivable motorhome.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Lambton%20Shores%2C%20OntarioDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Lambton Shores, Ontario?
Good news, your regular Ontario G driver's licence (or equivalent from your home province, state, or country) is all you need to rent an RV in Lambton Shores. No air brake endorsement, no commercial licence, and no special RV certification is required for the Class B campervans, Class C motorhomes, and travel trailers most guests book here. Approved drivers on RVezy are generally 25 or older, and ID verification happens right inside the booking flow, so there's no extra paperwork at pickup. Visiting from outside Canada? An International Driving Permit paired with your home licence keeps things smooth for your Lambton Shores RV trip.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat protection is included when I book an RV rental in Lambton Shores?
Every RVezy booking in Lambton Shores comes with a renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance built right in, so you're covered from the moment you pull out of the host's driveway to the moment you return. The protection plan helps cover damage to the RV during your trip, and you choose the level of coverage that fits your comfort during checkout (hosts don't pick this for you). It gives you real financial peace of mind on Highway 21, the Bluewater Highway, and the sandy approaches into Pinery Provincial Park. Pro tip: review the coverage options carefully before confirming, upgrading is a small daily cost for big reassurance.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if my plans change, can I cancel my Lambton Shores RV rental?
Yes, booking is low-risk. RVezy (not the individual host) sets the cancellation policy, which includes a money-back grace period right after you book. Because the refund amount can depend on how far out you cancel, review the current cancellation details on the RVezy website before you confirm. If a host ever cancels on you, RVezy refunds your booking or provides travel credits so you're not left without options. Pro tip: lock in your dates early for July and August, Grand Bend weekends sell out fast and you can adjust later if needed.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on an RV trip to Lambton Shores?
Absolutely, Lambton Shores is one of the most dog-friendly stretches of Lake Huron, and finding a pet-friendly RV rental in Lambton Shores is easy. Just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy and you'll see motorhomes and trailers from hosts who welcome dogs (some allow cats too). Pinery Provincial Park has a designated leashed dog beach and dog-friendly hiking trails like the Heritage and Riverside trails, and Ipperwash and Port Franks both offer quieter shorelines for an off-peak paw stroll. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm any pet fee and to ask about a vacuum or lint roller, sandy dog paws and Pinery's beach dunes go together.
ontarioparks.ca/park/pinery/petsincampgroundCan the RV be delivered right to my campsite in Lambton Shores?
Yes, RV delivery in Lambton Shores is one of the most popular options on the platform, especially for first-timers. Many hosts will tow the trailer or drive the motorhome directly to your site at Pinery Provincial Park, Ipperwash Beach, Pine Dale Motor Inn and Campground, or a private cottage driveway in Grand Bend, level it, hook up water, sewer, and 30-amp power, and walk you through every system. Filter listings by Delivery to see which owners offer it and how far they'll travel, most cover the Grand Bend, Forest, Thedford, and Port Franks corridor. Pro tip: delivery is a game-changer if you're nervous about backing a trailer into a sandy Pinery site.
ontarioparks.ca/parks/pineryHow far can I drive on a Lambton Shores RV trip?
You've got plenty of room to roam. Hosts set their own mileage policies, and you'll find listings offering generous daily allowances or even RV rental with unlimited mileage right in the search filters. From Grand Bend you're about 45 minutes (70 km) to Sarnia and the Blue Water Bridge, 1 hour (95 km) to London, 2.5 hours (240 km) to Toronto, 1.5 hours (110 km) to Stratford for the festival, and roughly 4 hours (340 km) up Highway 21 to Tobermory and the Bruce Peninsula. Pro tip: if you're planning a longer RV road trip from Lambton Shores up the Lake Huron coast, sort listings by unlimited mileage first to keep the budget predictable.
511on.ca/Where are the best campgrounds near Lambton Shores?
The best campgrounds near Lambton Shores all sit within a 20-minute drive of Grand Bend. Pinery Provincial Park is the headliner with around 1,000 sites across Riverside, Dunes, and Burley campgrounds, hundreds of electrical hookups, and 10 km of Lake Huron beach. Pine Dale Motor Inn and Campground in Grand Bend offers full-service RV sites close to the main strip. Oakridge Acres Country Inn near Ailsa Craig and Pine Acres Carefree RV Resort in Port Franks are great quieter alternatives, and Ipperwash Beach Camp puts you on the shoreline north of town. Pro tip: book Pinery's Riverside Campground if you want a year-round, serviced spot.
ontarioparks.ca/parks/pineryWhen is the best time to visit Lambton Shores in an RV?
Late June through early September is prime time for RV camping in Lambton Shores, with Lake Huron water temperatures climbing to a swimmable 20-23 C and daytime highs of 24-28 C. May and early June are cooler (12-20 C) but quieter and cheaper. September brings warm water, thinner crowds, and beautiful sunsets over Pinery's dunes. October is glorious for fall colours in the oak savanna, and Pinery's Riverside Campground stays open all winter for snowy adventures with temperatures often between -5 and -10 C. Pro tip: aim for the second half of August, the lake is at its warmest and the summer crowds start to thin once Ontario schools head back.
climate.weather.gc.ca/climate_normals/index_e.htmlI've never rented an RV before, will I be okay?
You'll be in great shape, first time renting an RV in Lambton Shores is genuinely easy. Your host will give you a full walkthrough at pickup covering propane, water, the awning, slide-outs, the generator, and the dump procedure, and you can message or call them during your trip with any questions. RVezy's support team is also one tap away. The roads around Grand Bend (Highway 21, Highway 81, and Lakeshore Road) are flat, wide, and well-paved, ideal for getting your bearings before heading further afield. Pro tip: book a travel trailer with delivery for your first trip, the host sets everything up so you can focus on the beach, not the hookups.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/categories/360002007073-RentersWhat happens if something goes wrong with the RV during my trip?
You're never alone out there. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, so if you get a flat on Highway 21, the fridge stops cooling at Pinery, or the battery dies at Ipperwash Beach, one phone call gets help dispatched. Your host is also a direct lifeline, most owners answer messages quickly and can talk you through quick fixes like resetting the GFCI or relighting the water heater. RVezy's support team backs everything up. Pro tip: save the roadside assistance number and your host's number to your phone before leaving the driveway, cell service can dip in parts of Pinery and Port Franks.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Lambton Shores RV rental across the border to the US?
Cross-border trips into Michigan are sometimes possible since the Blue Water Bridge in Sarnia is only 45 minutes south of Grand Bend, but it depends on the individual host and their insurance. Message the host directly from the listing before booking to confirm US travel is allowed and to get any paperwork you'll need (registration, insurance card, and a signed permission letter). Travel to Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy rental. Popular cross-border routes from Lambton Shores include Port Huron up to Mackinac and the Lake Michigan Circle Tour. Pro tip: keep your passport, the host's letter, and the RV registration together for a smooth Canada Border Services crossing.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat should I budget for fuel on a Lambton Shores RV trip?
Fuel is one of the easier costs to plan for. Gas prices in Lambton County typically run between $1.45 and $1.70 per litre, and you'll find stations in Grand Bend, Forest, Thedford, and along Highway 21. Realistic fuel economy is 18-22 L/100km for a Class C motorhome, 25-30 L/100km for a Class A, and 14-18 L/100km for a truck towing a travel trailer. For a typical 4-day, 400 km loop around Pinery, Bayfield, and Sarnia, expect to spend roughly $100-$150 on fuel. Pro tip: top up in Forest or Parkhill where prices often run a few cents cheaper than the pumps right in Grand Bend.
oeb.ca/consumer-information-and-protection/gasoline-pricesHow far in advance should I book a campground near Lambton Shores?
For Pinery Provincial Park, book the moment your dates open, the Ontario Parks reservation system allows bookings up to five months in advance, and electrical sites for July and August weekends often disappear within the first hour. Reserve at reservations.ontarioparks.ca with your Ontario Parks account ready to go. Private parks like Pine Dale and Oakridge Acres usually open phone or online bookings in January for the upcoming season. Shoulder-season trips (May, June, September) are far easier and you can often score a Pinery site a week out. Pro tip: if Pinery shows sold out, set a Campnab alert, cancellations happen daily and you can grab one within hours.
reservations.ontarioparks.ca/What are driving conditions like around Lambton Shores?
Driving around Lambton Shores is refreshingly relaxed compared to the GTA. Highway 21 (the Bluewater Highway) is a flat, two-lane road hugging Lake Huron with wide shoulders and easy sightlines, perfect for an RV trip in Lambton Shores. Highway 81 and County Road 7 connect inland to Forest and Thedford with gentle farmland terrain. Watch for summer beach traffic backups on Highway 21 through Grand Bend on Friday afternoons and Sunday evenings, lake-effect snow squalls in winter, and the occasional deer crossing near Pinery at dawn and dusk. Pro tip: download Ontario 511 before you go for live road closures, and aim to roll through Grand Bend before 11 a.m. on summer Saturdays.
511on.ca/What amenities do campgrounds in Lambton Shores offer for RVs?
Most campgrounds around Lambton Shores are well set up for RVs. Pinery Provincial Park has hundreds of electrical sites (15/30 amp), pull-throughs in Riverside, a dedicated RV dump and potable water fill station, comfort stations with showers and laundry, and a park store. Pine Dale and Pine Acres Carefree RV Resort offer full hookups including sewer and 50-amp service at many sites. Where to park an RV in Lambton Shores is rarely a question, the infrastructure is built for it. Pro tip: fill your fresh water tank at Pinery's gatehouse station before heading to your site, there's no convenient in-campground tap.
ontarioparks.ca/parks/pineryWhat's inside the RVs available in Lambton Shores?
You'll be surprised how well-equipped these rigs are. A typical motorhome rental in Lambton Shores sleeps 4-8 people and includes a queen bed, convertible dinette, full kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave, and sink, a bathroom with toilet and shower, roof A/C, propane furnace, and seatbelted seating for travel. Most listings also include a TV, some have Wi-Fi boosters or Starlink (helpful since Pinery cell service is spotty), and many hosts include outdoor essentials like a propane BBQ, camp chairs, and an outdoor mat. Class B campervan rentals in Lambton Shores are more compact but include everything you need for two. Pro tip: check the listing photos for a generator if you're heading to a non-electric Burley site.
tc.canada.ca/en/road-transportation/motor-vehicle-safety/recreational-vehiclesWhat add-ons and pickup options can I expect when I rent an RV in Lambton Shores?
Hosts in Lambton Shores offer a great mix of add-ons to customize your trip: bedding and linen packages ($25-$75), kitchen kits, outdoor gear (kayaks, bikes, beach chairs), generators, propane refills, and pet cleaning fees ($25-$50) if you're bringing a dog. Pickup is usually at the host's home in Grand Bend, Forest, Thedford, or Port Franks, but delivery to Pinery, Ipperwash, or a cottage rental is widely available, often for a flat fee based on distance. Mileage policies typically range from 150-250 km per day included, with extras at $0.30-$0.45/km. Pro tip: bundle delivery, setup, and a bedding package, you'll arrive at your campsite and the only thing left to do is light the firepit.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Lambton%20Shores%2C%20OntarioHow does payment and the security deposit work?
Payment is simple and secure. You pay through RVezy at the time of booking with a credit card, and the host's payout is released after pickup, which protects both you and the host. A security deposit (typically $500-$1,500 CAD depending on the RV) is pre-authorized on your card before your trip, not charged, and released after a smooth return. To avoid any issues, do a thorough walkaround with your host at pickup, take photos and videos, return the RV with the same fuel and propane levels, and dump the tanks if your host requires it. Pro tip: keep all communication with your host inside the RVezy app, it's the simplest way to document your trip from start to finish.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I rent an RV in Lambton Shores during the winter?
Yes, winter RV camping in Lambton Shores is a real (and magical) option. Pinery Provincial Park's Riverside Campground is open year-round with electrical hookups, plowed roads, a winterized comfort station with hot showers, groomed cross-country ski trails, and winter activities like tobogganing. To stay warm and worry-free, filter for RVs with four-season packages: heated holding tanks, enclosed underbellies, propane furnace, and a 30-amp shore power connection. Daytime winter temperatures average -2 to -8 C with occasional dips to -15 C, so the furnace will run. Pro tip: ask your host for the skirting kit and an extra propane tank, you'll burn through more than you expect during Lake Huron's snow squall nights.
