Campgrounds near Markstay-Warren, Ontario
Markstay-Warren is a small municipality on Highway 17 in northeastern Ontario, located in the Sudbury District roughly between Sudbury and North Bay. The area sits in the Canadian Shield, with lakes, rivers, and mixed boreal forest defining most of the surrounding landscape. Lake Nipissing lies a short drive south and anchors most of the region's RV camping.
Private campgrounds dominate the immediate area. Panorama Camp Lake Nipissing Cottages and Trailers, Loon's Landing, Carol Campsite and RV Park, and Glenrock Cottages and Trailer Park all sit along or near the north shore of Lake Nipissing, a region known for quiet water access, wildlife sightings, and small-town services. Sturgeon Falls KOA Holiday sits a bit farther east along Highway 17 and offers a larger, full-service option.
Most properties cater to trailers and motorhomes with seasonal and short-stay sites. Travelers looking for provincial park camping typically head to nearby Restoule or French River Provincial Park, both within a reasonable drive.
Things to do near Markstay-Warren
Lake Nipissing is the main draw. The lake is relatively shallow and warms up quickly after ice-out, offering comfortable swimming during summer camping trips. Fishing is popular across the lake, with Cache Bay at the mouth of the Sturgeon River, Callander Bay, and areas near North Bay all known as strong spots. Walleye, pike, and smallmouth bass are the common targets.
On land, families use the area as a base for day trips. Regional museums include the Sturgeon River House Museum in Sturgeon Falls, the Dionne Quints Museum in North Bay, and the Canadian Forces Museum of Aerospace Defence. Hikers can try the Duchesnay Falls Nature Trails, and the Kate Pace Way in North Bay is a paved multi-use path good for walking, biking, and inline skating. Kayak, canoe, and small motorboat rentals are widely available at lakeside campgrounds.

The RV season here is short and concentrated. Most private campgrounds open in mid-May around the Victoria Day long weekend, and close in early to mid-October after Canadian Thanksgiving. July and August are peak months, with warm days, warm lake water, and the strongest demand for waterfront sites.
June brings green forests and fewer crowds, but also black flies and mosquitoes, which peak from late May into early July. September is a strong shoulder month, with cooler nights, fall colour building through the month, and easier reservations. Ice fishing on Lake Nipissing draws winter visitors in January and February, but RV parks are closed and services in Markstay-Warren itself are limited during the cold months.
Walleye fishing on Lake Nipissing follows Ontario Fisheries Management Zone 11 regulations, with the open-water season generally running from the third Saturday in May through mid-March. Anyone fishing needs a valid Ontario Outdoors Card and licence.

How to book a campsite
Private campgrounds around Markstay-Warren, including Panorama Camp Lake Nipissing Cottages and Trailers, Loon's Landing, Carol Campsite and RV Park, and Glenrock Cottages and Trailer Park, take reservations directly by phone or through their own websites. Weekend and long-weekend sites for July and August often fill months in advance, so booking by late winter improves the chances of securing a waterfront site.
Sturgeon Falls KOA Holiday takes bookings through the KOA website or app, and KOA Rewards members can often lock in preferred sites earlier. For Ontario Parks properties such as Restoule and French River, use the Ontario Parks reservation system, which opens bookings on a rolling five-month window from the arrival date at 7:00 a.m. Eastern Time.
What to expect
Expect a quiet, lake-focused trip rather than a resort experience. Cell coverage is generally reliable along Highway 17 and in the towns but can drop off on back roads and at some lakeside sites. Grocery, fuel, and LCBO stops are easiest in Sturgeon Falls or Sudbury; Markstay itself has limited services.
Sites at the smaller properties tend to be treed and reasonably level, with 15 and 30 amp service common and 50 amp less widespread. Sturgeon Falls KOA offers full-service sites with water, sewer, and 30/50 amp hookups, is big-rig friendly, and has a mix of pull-thru and back-in sites.
Bring bug spray from June through July, a bear-aware food plan, and layers for cool evenings even in summer. Firewood should be sourced locally to avoid moving invasive species and pests.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Markstay-Warren, ON
How much does an RV rental in Markstay-Warren typically cost?
Renting an RV in Markstay-Warren is one of the most affordable ways to experience Northern Ontario's lakes and forests. On RVezy, you'll generally find travel trailers from around $125 to $200 CAD per night, Class C motorhomes in the $225 to $350 range, and larger Class A coaches from about $275 and up. Since hosts set their own nightly pricing, you can save by booking midweek, traveling outside the July to August peak, or filtering by Instant Book to spot fast-moving deals. For a cheap RV rental in Markstay-Warren, consider a smaller travel trailer paired with a host who offers delivery to nearby lakes. Pro tip: shoulder season in early June or September often delivers the best value with fewer bugs and stunning foliage along Highway 17.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Markstay-Warren%2C%20OntarioWhat kind of driver's license do I need to rent an RV in Markstay-Warren?
Good news: a standard Ontario G-class driver's license (or its equivalent from your home province, state, or country) is all you need to rent an RV in Markstay-Warren. No special motorhome endorsement or commercial license is required for the Class A, Class B, Class C, travel trailers, and fifth wheels listed on RVezy. Approved drivers must generally be at least 25 years old, and RVezy verifies ID through the platform during booking, so there is no paperwork hassle at pickup. Visiting from outside Canada? Bring your home license plus an International Driving Permit if your license isn't in English or French.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat protection is included when I book an RV rental in Markstay-Warren?
Every RV rental in Markstay-Warren booked on RVezy comes with a renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance built in, so you can hit Highway 17 with real peace of mind. During checkout you choose the protection level that best fits your trip (Standard, Wide Open, or Wide Open Plus): hosts do not select this for you. Each plan covers physical damage to the rental up to set limits, with progressively lower deductibles as you scale up. This isn't traditional auto insurance, but it's designed specifically for peer-to-peer RV rentals so you can focus on the campfire, not the paperwork. Review the full coverage details on RVezy's protection page before you book.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat happens if I need to cancel my Markstay-Warren RV rental?
RVezy uses a single, platform-wide cancellation policy that applies to every booking, so you don't need to compare fine print across listings. In general, you have a short grace period right after booking for a full refund, and refund amounts then scale based on how far in advance you cancel before your pickup date. Hosts do not set or display their own cancellation terms. If a host cancels on you, RVezy refunds the booking or helps you rebook. For extenuating circumstances like a wildfire smoke advisory or major storm in the Sudbury District, contact RVezy support right away so they can help sort out next steps. Full details are on the RVezy Help Center.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Markstay-Warren?
Absolutely, your pup is welcome on plenty of trips. On RVezy, just flip on the Pet-Friendly filter to see hosts in and around Markstay-Warren who happily welcome dogs (and sometimes cats) in their rigs. Northern Ontario is a dream for dog owners: leashed pets are allowed on most trails and at many beaches in nearby Halfway Lake Provincial Park and Grundy Lake Provincial Park, and the quiet country roads around the Veuve River are perfect for morning sniff-walks. When you message the host, mention your dog's size and breed so they can confirm the fit. Pro tip: pack a tie-out line and an extra towel, since the lakes here are basically magnets for muddy paws.
ontarioparks.ca/park/halfwaylakeCan the RV be delivered to my campsite in Markstay-Warren?
Yes, RV delivery in Markstay-Warren is one of the most popular ways to book, especially for first-timers. Many RVezy hosts will drive the motorhome or trailer directly to your campground, cottage, or lakeside lot, level it, hook up the utilities, and walk you through everything before they leave. That means you can skip towing entirely and just show up with your groceries and fishing rod. Delivery is commonly offered to nearby spots like Windy Lake Provincial Park, the French River area, and private campgrounds along Highway 535. Fees vary by distance, so use the Delivery filter and message the host with your exact address for an accurate quote. Pro tip: ask about setup at a seasonal site for a stress-free, glamping-style stay.
ontarioparks.ca/park/windylakeHow far can I travel on a Markstay-Warren RV trip, and is unlimited mileage available?
You've got room to roam. Most hosts in the Markstay-Warren area include a generous daily kilometre allowance (commonly 100 to 200 km per day), and many offer RV rentals with unlimited mileage, especially for longer bookings, so a true road trip is on the table. From Markstay-Warren, you're about 50 km east of Sudbury, 110 km west of North Bay, 175 km south to Parry Sound, and roughly 400 km to Sault Ste. Marie along the legendary Highway 17 north shore of Lake Huron. Each listing clearly shows the mileage policy and per-kilometre overage rate before you book. Pro tip: if you're planning a big loop like Sudbury to Manitoulin Island, filter for unlimited-km listings up front to lock in your best price.
ontario.ca/page/road-conditionsWhere are the best campgrounds near Markstay-Warren for an RV?
You're spoiled for choice. Some of the best campgrounds near Markstay-Warren include Windy Lake Provincial Park (about 70 km northwest, with electrical sites and a sandy beach), Halfway Lake Provincial Park (about 90 km north on Highway 144, known for its rugged Canadian Shield scenery), Grundy Lake Provincial Park (around 110 km south, family favourite with multiple swim beaches), and Mashkinonje Provincial Park on Lake Nipissing for a quieter, non-operating experience. Closer to home, private options like Deeridge Family Camping in Lavigne sit just 20 minutes away on Lake Nipissing's south shore. RV camping in Markstay-Warren means easy access to all of these. Pro tip: book Ontario Parks sites the moment the five-month reservation window opens.
ontarioparks.ca/park/grundylakeWhen is the best time of year for an RV rental in Markstay-Warren?
The sweet spot for RVing here runs from late May through early October, with each window offering something special. Late May and June bring warming days (highs 18 to 24 degrees Celsius), green forests, and great fishing, though you'll want bug spray for blackfly season. July and August are peak summer with highs around 25 degrees Celsius, warm lake swimming, and the lively Markstay-Warren Fall Fair kicking off the season's end in early September. September into early October delivers spectacular maple and birch foliage along Highway 17 with crisp 10 to 18 degree days and almost no bugs. Winter RVing is possible too if you book a four-season rig. Pro tip: a campervan rental in Markstay-Warren during late September is pure magic.
climate.weather.gc.ca/climate_normals/index_e.htmlI've never rented an RV before. How does it work in Markstay-Warren?
First time renting an RV? You'll be in great hands. Every RVezy host in the Markstay-Warren area provides a hands-on orientation at pickup, walking you through driving, the generator, water systems, propane, the awning, and how to dump tanks, so you never leave wondering which button does what. You can message your host any time before, during, or after the trip with questions, and RVezy support is just a call away 24/7. Many first-timers choose a smaller Class C motorhome or a travel trailer delivered straight to a campground like Windy Lake, which removes any towing or backing-in stress. Pro tip: ask your host to record a quick video of the walkthrough so you can rewatch it at the campsite.
ontario.ca/page/driving-rv-or-pulling-trailerWhat happens if I have a breakdown or roadside emergency during my trip?
You're never on your own. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, covering things like flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, and towing if something goes sideways on a remote stretch of Highway 17 or Highway 535. One quick call gets help dispatched to your location, whether you're parked at a lake outside Markstay-Warren or rolling through Killarney Provincial Park. Your host is also a great resource for rig-specific questions, since they know their RV better than anyone. Pro tip: cell service can get spotty north of Sudbury, so download offline maps and screenshot your host's contact info plus the RVezy roadside number before you leave town.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat are the best RV road trips from Markstay-Warren?
You're sitting on one of Ontario's best launching pads. A popular RV road trip from Markstay-Warren is the Lake Huron North Shore run west on Highway 17 to Sault Ste. Marie (about 400 km, with stops at Chutes Provincial Park and Lake Superior views). The Killarney loop south on Highway 637 (about 130 km) delivers iconic La Cloche white quartzite ridges and turquoise lakes. Head north on Highway 144 to Timmins for true wilderness, or east on Highway 17 to Ottawa (about 450 km) for a city-and-nature combo. Manitoulin Island via the Little Current swing bridge is another gem, around 175 km away. Cross-border trips into the US are sometimes allowed; just message the host first, and note that travel to Mexico isn't permitted on RVezy rentals.
ontario.ca/page/ontario-highway-networkWhat should I budget for fuel during my Markstay-Warren RV trip?
Fuel is usually the biggest variable cost, but it's easy to plan for. Expect roughly 18 to 25 litres per 100 km (about 9 to 13 MPG) for a Class C motorhome, 15 to 20 L/100 km for a campervan, and 18 to 22 L/100 km for a truck towing a travel trailer. Gas prices in the Sudbury District typically run a few cents higher than southern Ontario, so fill up in Sudbury or North Bay before heading into remote stretches where stations are 60+ km apart. For a 4-day, 600 km loop, budget roughly $200 to $350 CAD in fuel depending on your rig. Pro tip: the Petro-Canada in Markstay on Highway 17 is the most convenient last-fill before heading east toward Sturgeon Falls.
nrcan.gc.ca/energy/fuel-prices/4596How far in advance should I book campgrounds near Markstay-Warren?
For Ontario provincial parks, the earlier the better. Ontario Parks opens reservations on a rolling 5-month window through the official reservation system, and prime summer weekends at Halfway Lake, Windy Lake, and Grundy Lake can fill quickly, especially electrical sites that fit larger motorhomes. For private campgrounds and resorts around Lake Nipissing and the French River, 2 to 4 weeks ahead is usually enough outside of long weekends. If you're booking late, midweek availability is almost always wide open. Pro tip: set a calendar reminder for 7:00 a.m. Eastern on the date exactly five months before your arrival and log in to the Ontario Parks reservation site the second it opens to grab the best lakeside pull-through sites.
reservations.ontarioparks.ca/What are driving conditions like around Markstay-Warren?
Driving an RV around Markstay-Warren is refreshingly relaxed compared to southern Ontario. Highway 17 (the Trans-Canada) runs right through town with wide shoulders, two lanes, and gentle grades, ideal for first-time motorhome drivers. Watch for moose and deer at dawn and dusk, especially on Highway 535 and Highway 539 heading toward St. Charles and Noelville, where wildlife crossings are common. Winter brings snow and ice from November through March, so most RV rentals here run May through October. Summer storms can roll in fast off Lake Huron, so check Environment Canada before long drives. Pro tip: avoid towing during the Friday afternoon rush between Sudbury and North Bay, when locals head to the cottage, and you'll have the road nearly to yourself.
511on.ca/What amenities can I expect at campgrounds near Markstay-Warren?
Local campgrounds offer the full spectrum, from rustic to fully serviced. Ontario Parks like Windy Lake and Halfway Lake provide electrical sites (15/30 amp), potable water fill stations, comfort stations with flush toilets and showers, and centralized dump stations included with your site fee. Private parks around Lake Nipissing and the French River often add full hookups (water, electric, and sewer at your site), Wi-Fi, laundry, and camp stores. For free dumping options, the municipal dump station in nearby Sudbury is a reliable stop on your way home. Always bring a 25-foot drinking-water hose, a 30-amp to 15-amp adapter, and a sewer hose with elbow. Pro tip: pick up firewood locally to avoid spreading invasive species like emerald ash borer.
ontarioparks.ca/campingWhat's typically included inside an RV rental in Markstay-Warren?
You'll find rentals come surprisingly well-equipped for the Northern Ontario lifestyle. Expect comfortable sleeping for 2 to 8 (depending on rig), a full kitchen with stove, fridge, microwave, sink, and cookware, an indoor bathroom with toilet and shower, a dinette or lounge area, air conditioning, and a furnace for cool Sudbury District nights. Many motorhome rentals in Markstay-Warren also include a generator (great for boondocking on Crown land), a TV/DVD, an outdoor awning, and seatbelted seating for travel. Wi-Fi is hit-or-miss depending on cell coverage, so plan to use your phone hotspot. Each listing's detail page shows exactly what's included. Pro tip: message the host to confirm camping chairs, an outdoor mat, and a propane fire pit are on board, since open fires can be restricted during dry spells.
ontario.ca/page/outdoor-firesWhat add-ons and options can I get with my Markstay-Warren RV rental?
Hosts in the Markstay-Warren area offer a wide menu of add-ons to make your trip turnkey. Popular extras include linen and towel packages, stocked kitchen kits, camp chairs and outdoor mats, BBQs, generators, bike racks, kayaks or canoes (a win for the Veuve River and Lake Nipissing), and sometimes Starlink for staying connected up north. Pickup is typically at the host's address, though many hosts offer delivery directly to your campsite for a flat fee. Mileage policies vary, with most hosts including 100 to 200 km per day and per-kilometre overage rates shown transparently on the listing. Pro tip: bundling delivery, setup, and a kayak add-on with a single host often costs less than sourcing each separately, so message the host for a custom quote.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Markstay-Warren%2C%20OntarioHow do payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Booking is smooth and secure. You pay through the RVezy platform with a credit card, never directly to the host, which keeps everything documented and protected. The security deposit is separate from your booking payment: it's pre-authorized (not charged) on your card before pickup, with the amount shown clearly on each listing, and it's released after the trip once the host confirms the RV came back in good shape. To avoid any deposit issues, follow the host's checklist: return with the fuel and propane levels specified, empty the holding tanks at a dump station, and do a quick walkaround together at dropoff. Pro tip: snap photos at pickup and dropoff for your own records.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I rent an RV in Markstay-Warren during the winter or shoulder season?
Yes, and winter in The Seven region of Northeastern Ontario is genuinely magical if you come prepared. A handful of RVezy hosts around Sudbury and Markstay-Warren offer four-season rigs with heated holding tanks, enclosed underbellies, and upgraded insulation, ready for ice fishing on Lake Nipissing, snowmobiling on OFSC trails, or skating at the Caisse Populaire Outdoor Rink. Most winter trips run on shore power at a serviced campground rather than dry camping, since temperatures can drop below -20 degrees Celsius from December to February. Filter for hosts with winter availability and message them to confirm the rig is winterized for active use. Pro tip: book a delivery-and-setup package so the host handles cold-weather hookups and you just walk in to a warm RV.
