Campgrounds near Tilbury, Ontario
Tilbury sits in Chatham-Kent in Southwestern Ontario, roughly halfway between Windsor and Chatham, with Lake St. Clair to the north and Lake Erie a short drive south. The area gives RV travellers two very different shorelines within about half an hour, plus a Carolinian-forest provincial park and several full-service private resorts.
Wheatley Provincial Park is the closest publicly run campground, located on Lake Erie near the community of Wheatley in the municipality of Chatham-Kent, and occupying an area of 241 hectares. Wheatley offers car camping in four campgrounds: Boosey Creek, Highlands, Middle Creek and Two Creeks, with a mix of electrical and non-electrical sites in a Carolinian forest setting.
Private options cluster along both lakes. Campers Cove Campground and Sturgeon Woods Campground and Marina sit near Wheatley on Lake Erie, while Rochester Place Resort and Lakeside Village Motel and Campground are on the Lake St. Clair side, closer to Belle River and Windsor. Most private parks offer full hookups, seasonal sites, and family amenities.
Things to do near Tilbury
Point Pelee National Park is the anchor attraction, about twenty minutes from Wheatley and known for spring songbird migration, monarch butterfly staging in fall, and access to the southernmost mainland point in Canada. Wheatley Provincial Park adds Carolinian forest, small waterways including Boosey Creek and Sugar Creek that are suitable for paddling, and a Lake Erie shoreline for swimming or evening walks.
On the Lake St. Clair side, Rochester Place Golf Club offers a parkland-style course that winds through mature trees, along with marina access and boating out of Belle River. Lake St. Clair is a shallow, warm-water fishery popular for walleye, bass, and perch.
Inland, the region has wineries in Kingsville and Leamington, the Jack Miner Migratory Bird Sanctuary, and Colasanti's Tropical Gardens. Birding festivals in May and cycling along quiet county roads round out a typical trip.

Private parks along Lake Erie such as Campers Cove typically open in late April and close in early October.
Summer is the busiest window. Wheatley is just one hour from Detroit, Windsor, and London, so the park can be very popular, and reservations via Ontario Parks should be made as soon as possible, especially for stays in July and the first two weeks of August. Canadian holiday weekends including Victoria Day and Canada Day are the tightest; midweek stays are easier to secure. Creekside sites in Two Creeks Campground and the few in Middle Creek Campground tend to be the first to book up.
Spring migration in May brings a surge of birders to Point Pelee and the surrounding campgrounds. Fall is quieter but scenic, with warm days and cooler nights.

We just wrapped up a wonderful family reunion using Jose as our trailer host on our family property. Jose was great at communicating timing for delivery and pick up and when we had questions about the fridge and furnace, drove out of his way to help. The service was fantastic. I would recommend this camper for a park set up instead of off grid based on our own personal needs, but Jose and his trailer were really great! Thank you again!

What to expect on the ground
Roads in and around Tilbury are flat and easy for larger rigs, with Highway 401 giving quick access from either Windsor or Chatham. Most private campgrounds on Lake Erie and Lake St. Clair offer 30 and 50 amp service, sewer, and water, along with pull-through sites suitable for towable trailers and larger motorhomes.
Wheatley has a mix of site types. Highlands Campground hosts 44 electrical and 31 non-electrical campsites in a more open, less wooded setting, with water taps, a comfort station, laundry facilities and a playground close by. Boosey Creek is a semi-wilderness area with non-electrical sites, heavily treed with some narrow roadways where large trailers will have difficulty manoeuvring, and is better suited to tents and camper vans.
Lake Erie beaches are sandy but the water can shift from calm to choppy quickly, so families with young children should watch conditions. Cell service is generally reliable across the area.
