Campgrounds and RV parks near Hauterive, QC

The St. Lawrence shoreline is the main draw. East of Baie-Comeau on Route 138, the Pointe-des-Monts lighthouse, built in 1830, is one of the oldest on the St. Lawrence and is open to visitors during the summer season, with sweeping views of the river, the Gulf, and passing marine mammals. Route 389 heads north past lakes and rivers to the Manic-5 dam, a multiple-arch-and-buttress hydroelectric structure operated by Hydro-Québec. Whale watching is a regional signature: blue whales, belugas, fin whales, and humpbacks visit the St. Lawrence in summer and can sometimes be spotted from shore. RV travellers crossing to Bic Provincial Park can hike Pic Champlain and watch harbour and grey seals from the coastal trails.

The practical RV season on the Côte-Nord runs from late May through early October. Baie-Comeau does not fully shut down in winter, but most attractions and private campgrounds operate from mid-May to October, and this is also when whales are most likely to be seen in the St. Lawrence. July and August deliver the warmest weather, the longest daylight, and peak whale activity, but they also bring the busiest campgrounds. Reservations for waterfront sites and Bic Provincial Park should be made well in advance for summer weekends. Late spring is cool and damp, with lingering snowmelt inland and limited services at smaller private parks until Victoria Day weekend. September offers strong wildlife viewing, fewer crowds, and intense fall colours along Route 389, though nights turn cold quickly. Winter camping is available in the Porc-Épic sector of Parc national du Bic, requires a minimum of two adults per sector for camper safety, and is bookable by phone only. Most private campgrounds in the Hauterive area close by mid-October.

Hauterive is part of Baie-Comeau, a working port city with full RV-relevant services: fuel, propane, groceries, and big-box stores. The town has Walmart and Canadian Tire locations for camping supplies. French is the dominant language, English is not as widely spoken as in Montreal or Quebec City, and a vehicle is needed to get around the area. Distances between services on Route 138 east of Baie-Comeau grow quickly, so plan fuel stops. Coastal campgrounds can be windy and cool even in midsummer, and fog is common along the estuary. Blackflies and mosquitoes peak in June and early July. Cell coverage is reliable in town and along Route 138 but spotty on Route 389 north toward the Manic dams. RV travellers heading to Gaspésie can use the Baie-Comeau-Matane ferry for vehicles and motorhomes.
