Camping near Saint-Mathieu-d'Harricana
Saint-Mathieu-d'Harricana is a small municipality in the Abitibi-Témiscamingue region of western Quebec, part of the census agglomeration of Amos and home to the Eska Water bottling plant that draws from the surrounding esker. The village sits on Route 109 in boreal forest and lake country, making it a practical base for RV travellers heading deeper into Abitibi.
The main camping draw within easy driving distance is Parc national d'Aiguebelle, a SEPAQ-managed provincial park southwest of town. Its south sector campground at Lac Matissard - Aiguebelle Provincial Park offers serviced and unserviced sites on a sandy lakeshore, with a beach, watercraft rental, hiking trails, a convenience store, and a nature boutique. A second campground at Lac Loïs in the north sector adds a more rustic, dog-friendly option. The park's south entrance is reached via the village of Mont-Brun, roughly 8 km off the main road, and stays open year round.
Things to do in Saint-Mathieu-d'Harricana
Most activity centres on Parc national d'Aiguebelle. Lac Matissard - Aiguebelle Provincial Park has a supervised sandy beach, a network of hiking trails, and a paddle-friendly lake where the park rents light watercraft including canoes and kayaks. Wildlife viewing is a draw across the park's lakes and wetlands, and beaver activity is visible along the Matissard creek. The park's Abijévis hills lookouts, a suspended footbridge, a helical staircase, and a fire tower are signature day-hike features, with more than 50 km of trails in total. Backcountry paddlers can string together a canoe route through the interior lakes. Closer to the village, the Harricana River corridor and the cycling network around Amos offer flatter outings suited to families.

The serviced camping season at Parc national d'Aiguebelle runs roughly from mid-May through mid-October, with peak demand from late June through August during Quebec's construction holiday and the summer school break. July and August deliver the warmest, driest weather and the full slate of beach and paddling activities, but mosquitoes and black flies are heaviest from late May into early July, so RV travellers with young kids often prefer mid-July onward.
September brings cool nights, fewer bugs, and the first fall colours across the boreal mixed forest, though showers remain frequent. By mid-October most serviced sites close for the season. Winter access continues through the south entrance at Mont-Brun, with rustic cabins reachable on skis or snowshoes, but RV camping is not practical from November through April given deep snow and sub -20 °C nights.

How to book campgrounds near Saint-Mathieu-d'Harricana
Camping at Parc national d'Aiguebelle is reserved through SEPAQ, the agency that runs Quebec's national parks and tourist establishments. Bookings for the following summer open in early November of the previous year across the network, and weekends, statutory holidays, and the late-July construction weeks sell out first, especially the serviced lakeshore sites at Lac Matissard - Aiguebelle Provincial Park. A virtual waiting room assigns a random queue position at opening, then bookings move to first-come, first-served. Reservations can be made online at sepaq.com or by phone. A park access fee is added to every stay on top of the campsite charge. Canoe-camping interior sites are released on a separate opening date in mid-winter.
What to expect at campgrounds near Saint-Mathieu-d'Harricana
Expect a quiet, boreal-forest setting on lakes rather than a resort-style campground. At Lac Matissard - Aiguebelle Provincial Park, the south-sector Abijévis campground has about 47 sites spread among spruce, birch, and pine, with a mix of unserviced sites, one-service sites, and two-service sites with electricity and water. Amenities include showers, fire rings, firewood for sale, a convenience store, laundry, light-watercraft rental, and a supervised sandy beach. Cell coverage is patchy inside the park. The road in from Mont-Brun is paved to the entrance and gravel within the park, so larger Class A rigs should call ahead about site length. Dogs are not allowed at the Abijévis sites but are accepted at the Ojibway-Barlow sector on Lac Loïs.
