Campgrounds near Collinsville, Alabama
Collinsville sits in DeKalb County in northeast Alabama, on the western side of Lookout Mountain and within short driving distance of Weiss Lake and the Little River Canyon National Preserve. The area is a working landscape of farms, small towns, and forested ridges, with camping options concentrated along the lake shoreline to the north and along the Lookout Mountain corridor to the east.
RV renters typically base a trip here to fish Weiss Lake, drive the Little River Canyon Rim Parkway, or hike waterfalls in DeSoto State Park. Joyland RV Park and Wills Creek RV Park sit closest to Collinsville itself, while Bay Springs Motel and Campground, Weiss Lake RV Park, and Chesnut Bay Resort are clustered along the lake near Centre and Leesburg.
Most private parks in the area offer full hookups and pull-through sites suited to larger rentals. Public camping at DeSoto State Park is roughly 45 minutes east on Lookout Mountain and adds a 94-site full-hookup improved campground plus primitive sites, giving renters a mix of resort-style and state-park options within an hour of town.
Things to do near Collinsville
Weiss Lake is the region's headline activity. Anglers know it as the Crappie Capital of the World, and it also produces largemouth and striped bass across a 30,200-acre Alabama Power reservoir with public ramps, marinas, and 447 miles of shoreline.
Little River Canyon National Preserve, run by the National Park Service, protects the canyon of the Little River on top of Lookout Mountain. The Rim Parkway strings together roughly a dozen overlooks, plus Little River Falls and swimming holes accessible from the road.
DeSoto State Park adds more than 30 miles of hiking and mountain-bike trails, waterfalls including 104-foot DeSoto Falls, and a nature center. Closer to town, Cherokee Rock Village offers boulder fields and long views over the valley, and the Collinsville Trade Day flea market draws regional crowds on Saturdays.

Spring and fall are the strongest windows for RV travel here. March through May brings wildflowers, waterfalls at full flow in DeSoto State Park, and the pre-spawn and spawn crappie bite on Weiss Lake, which is why lakeside parks fill quickly on weekends. October through early November delivers hardwood color on Lookout Mountain and cooler nights suited to campfires.
Summer is hot and humid with frequent afternoon thunderstorms. Lake parks stay busy with families using swim beaches and boat ramps, and holiday weekends around Memorial Day, Fourth of July, and Labor Day tend to book out weeks or months in advance.
Winter is the quiet season. Weiss Lake fishes year-round and crappie action picks back up in late February, but nights routinely drop below freezing and some private parks reduce services or close amenity buildings. Severe weather season peaks in spring, so travelers should build a weather-radio check into their daily routine from March through May.

Amazing host! I will be trying to use Ryan again next year for the same event!
Marcus R. - Oct 2026
Working with Ryan was a pleasure. He was friendly, accommodating, & helped me lug my heavy cooler into the camper. He was available for questions and for the most part, answered quickly- there was only one time there was a delay, but he was busy with work. If I’m in the area again, I will definitely use his service. The camper is well maintained.
Marie B. - Jul 2026

Lori was very accommodating and patient as our arrival time went astray and we arrived much later than we wanted. Since this was my first time renting, I was a bit ignorant of everything but she was great about walking me through everything I needed to know and was communicative during the entire process!
Derek V. - Nov 2025
Lorie was great to work with. The camper was super clean and stocked with goodies. Will be booking again with Lorie!!!!

How to book
Private parks near Collinsville, including Joyland RV Park, Bay Springs Motel and Campground, Weiss Lake RV Park, Chesnut Bay Resort, and Wills Creek RV Park, are reserved directly with the property by phone or through the operator's website. Deposits, cancellation windows, and pet policies vary by park, so confirm at the time of booking.
For public camping, DeSoto State Park is operated by Alabama State Parks and takes reservations through alapark.com up to one year in advance, with a 14-night maximum stay. Little River Canyon National Preserve itself does not operate a developed campground, so overnight visitors use nearby state park or private sites.
For peak fishing tournaments and fall foliage weekends, booking six to eight weeks ahead is prudent, and holiday weekends should be secured at least three months out.
What to expect on the ground
Roads into the lake parks and up Lookout Mountain are paved but narrow in places, with tight turns and grades that call for slower speeds in a rental RV. Cell service is generally good in Collinsville, Fort Payne, and Centre but can drop in the canyon and on backroads between them.
Sites at lake-focused parks like Weiss Lake RV Park skew toward long-term and repeat guests, so overnight availability can be limited on summer weekends. Resort-style properties such as Chesnut Bay Resort add amenities like pools and family programming, while smaller parks are quieter and geared toward anglers.
Bring insect repellent from late spring through early fall, plan for humidity, and stock a lightweight rain layer. Grocery and fuel stops are easy in Fort Payne, Centre, and along I-59.

A three-night trip from Collinsville to DeSoto State Park and back covers maybe 80 to 100 miles total, so you might spend $40 to $70 on fuel for the whole adventure. Driving an RV around Collinsville is refreshingly easygoing. I-59 runs right past town with wide lanes and gentle grades, and most of the scenic routes (Highway 11, Highway 68, and the Lookout Mountain Parkway) are well-maintained two-lane roads with low traffic. The Canyon Rim Drive (AL-176) along Little River Canyon has some steep grades, tight curves, and occasional potholes, so larger Class A motorhomes are better off sticking to AL-35 across the canyon instead. Watch for afternoon thunderstorms June through August and the occasional deer at dawn and dusk. Local insider tip: avoid Highway 11 in downtown Collinsville on Saturday mornings when the famous Collinsville Trade Day market draws huge crowds.

For dumping and filling fresh water mid-trip, the Love's Travel Stop in Fort Payne (Exit 218 off I-59) and the DeSoto State Park dump station (open to non-campers for a small fee) are the most convenient. Cell signal is strong in town and patchy inside Little River Canyon, so download offline maps before heading into the gorge.

Expect a real bed (queen or king in most Class C motorhomes and travel trailers), a kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave, and sink, an indoor bathroom with shower and toilet, air conditioning, furnace heat, a dinette that converts to extra sleeping, and seatbelts for everyone riding while driving. Many motorhome rental Collinsville listings also include a generator (great for boondocking at Cherokee Rock Village), a flat-screen TV, and Wi-Fi hotspot capability. Each listing shows exactly what's onboard and how many it sleeps, so you can match the RV to your family RV trip Collinsville plans in a couple of clicks.

Payment is simple, secure, and fully handled through the RVezy platform, so you never exchange cash or checks with the host. A refundable security deposit is pre-authorized on your card shortly before pickup and released after a clean return, typically within a few business days. To keep everything smooth, do the walk-around with your host at pickup and dropoff, take a few photos, and return the RV with the agreed fuel level and tanks emptied if required. Easy in, easy out.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I take my Collinsville RV rental into Tennessee, Georgia, or other nearby states?
Yes, interstate travel across the Southeast is welcomed on most RVezy rentals out of Collinsville, and your protection plan travels with you within the United States and Canada. Popular cross-border runs include Chattanooga and the Smokies in Tennessee (about 75 minutes to 4 hours), Cloudland Canyon and the north Georgia mountains (under an hour east), and the Florida panhandle beaches (about 6 hours south). Confirm your route with the host through the RVezy message thread before booking so they can confirm mileage and any state-specific notes. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because insurance coverage does not extend there, but the entire continental US is on the table for your Lookout Mountain based adventure.
