Campgrounds and RV parks near Decatur, AL

Decatur sits on the Tennessee River in north Alabama, roughly halfway between Huntsville and the Muscle Shoals area. The city is defined by Wheeler National Wildlife Refuge, a 35,000-acre refuge established in 1938 along the Tennessee River that attracts thousands of wintering waterfowl each year, and by the Wheeler Reservoir that stretches upstream from Wheeler Dam. RV travelers use Decatur as a base for wildlife viewing, lake recreation, and access to Huntsville's museums and Space Center within a 30-minute drive. Campground options cluster along the river and reservoir. Jay Landings Marina and RV Park and Valley Fort RV Park & Storage sit near the water on the Decatur side, while Beyonder Getaway Wheeler Lake and Beyonder Getaway at Wheeler Lake offer lake-oriented stays. Swan Creek Community provides a longer-term option north of the river. The area works year-round for RVs, with mild shoulder seasons and a hot, humid summer. Most private parks offer full hookups, and the flat river-valley terrain makes site access straightforward for larger rigs.

Private RV parks around Decatur, including Jay Landings Marina and RV Park, Valley Fort RV Park & Storage, and the Beyonder Getaway Wheeler Lake properties, take reservations directly through their websites or by phone. Book summer weekends and the Alabama Jubilee weekend several weeks in advance; midweek shoulder-season stays are typically available on shorter notice. The city-run campground at Point Mallard operates on different rules. Reservations can be made year-round for the 52 short-term sites in section A based on availability, only within the current calendar year, with a two-night minimum, one reservation at a time per household per RV, and full payment at booking with no refunds, cancellations, or date transfers. Extended-stay sites in sections B, C, and D are first-come, first-served.
