Campgrounds near Gurley, Alabama
Gurley sits in Madison County on the eastern edge of the Huntsville metro, between the Cumberland Plateau foothills and the Tennessee River. The surrounding area is Alabama state park country, with two of the state's most-booked parks within a short drive and a Tennessee River marina campground on the south side of Huntsville. It suits RV renters who want mountain hiking, a working cave, and river access without long transit days between stops.
Monte Sano State Park, on the mountain above Huntsville, is the closest full-hookup option and the main draw for most trips. Cathedral Caverns State Park in Kennamer Cove offers improved RV sites and cabins near the cave entrance. Parnell Creek RV Park provides a smaller private alternative, and Ditto Landing Marina & Campground puts rigs on the Tennessee River waterfront south of downtown Huntsville. Cathedral Caverns Cabins offer a non-RV lodging option on the same park property.
Most sites are wooded, gravel, and moderately spaced. Rigs of typical Class C and travel-trailer size fit without issue at the state parks, though mountain approach roads require attention.
Things to do near Gurley
Cathedral Caverns State Park runs guided walking tours through a commercial cave with a massive entrance and one of the largest stalagmites in the world. Gem mining, a short trail network, and backcountry sites give families a half-day or full-day plan on site.
Monte Sano State Park sits on a mountain plateau above Huntsville with an extensive hiking and mountain-biking trail system, overlooks, and a Japanese garden. It is roughly a ten-minute drive from downtown Huntsville, which puts the U.S. Space & Rocket Center, Redstone Arsenal museums, and the Huntsville Botanical Garden within easy reach.
Ditto Landing Marina & Campground offers a boat launch, bank fishing for bass, bream, and catfish, and a paved multi-use greenway along the Tennessee River. Lake Guntersville is a short drive southeast for larger-water boating and eagle viewing in winter.

Spring and fall are the strongest windows. March through May brings mild days, wildflowers on the mountain trails, and the shoulder period before summer heat. Weekends at Monte Sano and Cathedral Caverns fill quickly once the state parks impose a two-night minimum, which runs March through October. October delivers cooler nights and hardwood color at elevation on Monte Sano.
Summer is warm and humid with frequent afternoon thunderstorms. Cave tours at Cathedral Caverns stay near 60 degrees Fahrenheit year-round, which makes midsummer a comfortable time for underground touring even when campsites are hot. Ditto Landing is busiest in summer for boating and event weekends on the river.
Winter is the wettest local stretch, with December through March accounting for roughly 43 percent of annual precipitation per the local NWS office. Snow is occasional and rarely disruptive. Monte Sano and Cathedral Caverns campgrounds both operate year-round, and the extended-stay window of 31 nights runs November 1 through March 31 at select Alabama state parks.

Very good customer service
MICHAEL M. - Oct 2025
Jeremy was a pleasure to work with. He had some issues with the camper from a previous renter, but communicated these with me in detail. He was very helpful throughout the rental and answered questions. He was an honest and reputable owner. I would rent from him again in a second!! Thank you Jeremy!

Lori was very accommodating and patient as our arrival time went astray and we arrived much later than we wanted. Since this was my first time renting, I was a bit ignorant of everything but she was great about walking me through everything I needed to know and was communicative during the entire process!
Derek V. - Nov 2025
Lorie was great to work with. The camper was super clean and stocked with goodies. Will be booking again with Lorie!!!!

How to book
Monte Sano State Park and Cathedral Caverns State Park both reserve through the Alabama State Parks system at reserve.alapark.com. Sites can be booked up to one year in advance, which matters for weekends between March and October. A non-refundable per-site reservation fee applies, plus a resort fee per night.
Weekends require a two-night minimum from March through October at Cathedral Caverns, and major holidays require three nights. Campground check-in is 2 p.m. with checkout at 11 a.m. If a site shows unavailable, the reservation system exposes an availability calendar for each specific campsite, which helps for shifting dates by a day.
Ditto Landing books through Campspot or the marina directly. Cabins at Cathedral Caverns and at Monte Sano book on the same state park portal.
What to expect
Monte Sano's campground sits on a mountain plateau at roughly 1,600 feet, with two main loops of gravel sites under a hardwood canopy. Full hookups are limited to a subset of sites, with the majority offering water and electric. Sites can accommodate rigs up to about 65 feet, but the mountain approach is steep and GPS routing is unreliable for large rigs. The park directs drivers to use Governors Drive and Monte Sano Boulevard.
Cathedral Caverns has a smaller footprint with 36 improved sites split between an upper and lower loop, plus primitive and backcountry options. The upper loop holds the main bathhouse, and a dump station is available at no additional charge.
Ditto Landing is flatter, open, and river-adjacent, with a general store, dump station, and playground. It does not offer on-site laundry.

How much does it cost to rent an RV in Gurley, AL?

rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Gurley%2C%20AlabamaWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Gurley, Alabama?
Easy news first: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Gurley, Alabama. Alabama does not require a commercial driver's license (CDL) or any special RV endorsement for personal motorhomes or towables, even the big Class A rigs. You'll just need to be 25 or older, have a valid license, and complete a quick ID verification through the RVezy platform. Visiting from overseas? Pick up an International Driving Permit (IDP) from your home country's auto club before you fly in, usually under $20. That's it: no test, no class, no waiting. Most first-time renters are surprised by how simple the Alabama setup is.
alea.gov/dps/driver-licenseIs the RV covered if something goes wrong during my trip?
Yes, every RVezy booking in Gurley includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can hit the road with peace of mind. The protection plan covers physical damage to the RV during your rental, and you choose your coverage level at checkout to match your comfort zone. If you get a flat on Highway 72 or a dead battery at Monte Sano State Park, one call to RVezy roadside assistance gets help dispatched. Coverage details, limits, and deductibles are shown clearly during booking, which removes the biggest worry first-time renters have about their Gurley RV trip.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if I need to cancel my Gurley RV rental?
Booking is low-risk. RVezy applies a clear cancellation policy to every reservation, and you can review the exact terms during checkout before you confirm. Refund amounts depend on how far in advance you cancel relative to your pickup date. RVezy support is available before, during, and after your trip if plans shift, and if a host cancels on you, RVezy helps you rebook or issues a refund. Reserve your favorite Huntsville-area rig early, especially around U.S. Space and Rocket Center event weekends, then relax knowing the policy is spelled out up front.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a Gurley RV rental?
Yes, pet-friendly RV rental in Gurley is one of the most popular filters on RVezy. Toggle the Pet-Friendly filter on the listings page to see rigs whose owners welcome dogs. Once you are on the road, your dog will enjoy Monte Sano State Park's leashed-pet trails, the dog-friendly patios in nearby Huntsville, and the shoreline at Ditto Landing on the Tennessee River. Hosts may charge a small pet fee or ask that pets stay off furniture, so review the listing and message the host with your pet's size and breed. Bring a portable shade canopy, Alabama summer asphalt gets hot for paws.
alapark.com/parks/monte-sano-state-parkCan the RV be delivered to my campsite in Gurley?
Yes, RV delivery in Gurley is widely available and it is the easiest way to start your trip, especially if you have never towed before. Many RVezy hosts in the Huntsville and Gurley area will drive the RV to your campground, level it, connect water, sewer, and 30 or 50-amp power, and walk you through every system before they leave. Popular delivery destinations include Monte Sano State Park, Ditto Landing, and U.S. Space and Rocket Center RV Park. Use the Delivery filter on RVezy to see who offers it, then message the host with your site number. Delivery fees usually scale by mileage, so booking a host based near Gurley keeps costs down.
alapark.com/parks/monte-sano-state-park/campgroundHow does mileage work, and how far can I realistically drive from Gurley?
You have plenty of range for a Gurley RV trip. Most RVezy hosts include a set number of free miles per night (often 100 to 150) with a small per-mile fee after that, and some list RV rental with unlimited mileage, which is great for longer loops. From Gurley you can reach Chattanooga, TN in about 1 hour 15 minutes (around 75 miles), Nashville in roughly 2 hours (around 120 miles), Birmingham in about 1 hour 45 minutes (around 105 miles), the Great Smoky Mountains in about 4 hours (around 220 miles), and Atlanta in roughly 3 hours 15 minutes (around 195 miles). Filter by Unlimited Mileage if you are planning a Smokies or Gulf Coast loop.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Gurley%2C%20AlabamaWhere are the best campgrounds near Gurley for an RV stay?
You're spoiled for choice. The best campgrounds near Gurley include Monte Sano State Park (about 20 minutes away, with 89 improved sites at 1,600 feet of elevation and sweeping mountain views), U.S. Space & Rocket Center RV Park in Huntsville (full hookups right next to the rockets, perfect for Space Camp visits), Ditto Landing on the Tennessee River (city-run, full hookups, boat ramp on site), and Goose Pond Colony Resort in Scottsboro (lakeside sites about 35 minutes east). For something rustic, Cathedral Caverns State Park is just 25 minutes away. Pro tip: Monte Sano's Bankhead loop books out 6 months ahead for fall color, so reserve early.
alapark.com/parks/monte-sano-state-park/campgroundWhen is the best time of year to plan an RV trip from Gurley?
North Alabama offers a long camping season. The sweet spots for RV camping in Gurley are mid-March through May (highs in the 65 to 80 F range, dogwoods and azaleas blooming) and mid-September through early November (crisp 60 to 75 F days and brilliant fall color on Monte Sano and Keel Mountain). Summers are warm and humid with highs around 88 to 92 F, ideal for lake days at Guntersville if you plan for AC and shade. Winters are mild with daytime highs in the 50s, so December and January RV trips are doable. Late October on Monte Sano is hard to beat for foliage.
weather.gov/hun/I've never rented an RV before, will I actually know how to use it?
You'll be fine, this is exactly what RVezy is built for. First time renting an RV in Gurley? Every host gives you a hands-on walkthrough at pickup or delivery, covering propane, slides, water hookups, the generator, dumping tanks, and driving tips for the specific rig. You can message the host with questions before you book, and RVezy's 24/7 support is one tap away during your trip. Most renters say the walkthrough takes 30 to 45 minutes and answers everything they were worried about. Pro tip: do your shakedown night at Monte Sano State Park, it's 20 minutes from Gurley, so any forgotten item is a quick run to the Huntsville Walmart.
alapark.com/parks/monte-sano-state-parkWhat happens if the RV breaks down on my trip?
Every RVezy rental includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, so help is one phone call away whether you are on I-565 heading into Huntsville or on a back road near Paint Rock. Roadside assistance handles flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, fuel delivery, and towing to a qualified shop. Your host is also a direct message away through the RVezy app for quick questions about a switch or appliance. Before you pull away from pickup, snap a photo of the tire pressure sticker and save the RVezy support number to your phone favorites. You will likely never need it, but it is good to have.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take the RV across state lines or into Canada from Gurley?
Yes, interstate travel is fine on a Gurley RV rental, and most hosts encourage it. A popular RV road trip from Gurley heads north to Nashville (about 2 hours), east into the Great Smoky Mountains (about 4 hours), or south to Gulf Shores (about 5.5 hours). Cross-border trips into Canada may be allowed but require the host's written approval and confirmation that protection coverage extends north, so message before booking. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because protection coverage does not apply there. If you are eyeing the Smokies, pre-book Cades Cove Campground, it fills up months in advance for fall weekends.
nps.gov/grsm/planyourvisit/cadescovecg.htmHow much should I budget for fuel on a Gurley RV trip?
Fuel is the second-biggest line item after the rental, and it's predictable. Travel trailers towed by a half-ton truck average about 10 to 12 MPG, Class C motorhomes run 8 to 10 MPG, and Class B campervans can hit 17 to 20 MPG. Alabama gas prices typically sit a bit below the national average, often around $2.85 to $3.20 per gallon at the Shell and Murphy stations along Highway 72 and US-431 near Gurley. For a 500-mile loop through Huntsville, Chattanooga, and back, budget roughly $150 to $200 in a Class C. Pro tip: fill up in Gurley or Scottsboro before heading into the Smokies, where prices jump significantly.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Gurley?
Book sooner than you think. For a motorhome rental in Gurley paired with Alabama State Parks like Monte Sano, Lake Guntersville, or Cathedral Caverns, reserve through the Alabama State Parks site 4 to 6 months ahead for spring, fall, and any holiday weekend. U.S. Space and Rocket Center RV Park and Ditto Landing typically need 2 to 3 months for summer weekends. TVA's Honeycomb Campground on Lake Guntersville is bookable on Recreation.gov within its release window. If your dates are tight, look at midweek arrivals on Sunday or Monday, you will find openings that vanish by Thursday night.
alapark.com/reservationsWhat are local driving conditions like around Gurley?
Driving in and around Gurley is refreshingly easy compared to big-city RVing. US-72 is the main four-lane through town, flat, well-maintained, and RV-friendly all the way from Huntsville to Scottsboro. Watch for the climb up Monte Sano on Highway 431, it's a steady 6% grade with switchbacks that larger Class A rigs should take slowly in low gear. Summer afternoon thunderstorms can bring quick downpours, and winter ice (rare, but possible in January) closes mountain roads briefly. Avoid trying to navigate downtown Huntsville's older neighborhoods like Five Points in anything over 28 feet. Pro tip: use the Tennessee River bridge at Ditto Landing rather than narrow back roads if you're heading south.
dot.state.al.us/What hookups and dump stations will I find at campgrounds near Gurley?
You'll find excellent infrastructure for RV camping in Gurley. Monte Sano State Park offers 30 and 50-amp electric, water, and an on-site dump station; U.S. Space & Rocket Center RV Park has full hookups (water, sewer, 30/50-amp) at every site; Ditto Landing offers full hookups plus a dump station and potable water fill; and Goose Pond Colony has full hookups on the lake. For free dumping, the Madison County Madison Boulevard rest area and several Pilot/Flying J truck stops along I-565 work in a pinch. Most parks have potable water spigots at each site or near the entrance. Pro tip: bring a 25-foot freshwater hose and a 90-degree sewer elbow, the Monte Sano sites are spaced out.
alapark.com/parks/monte-sano-state-park/campgroundWhat amenities come inside a typical Gurley RV rental?
More than you'd expect. A typical campervan rental in Gurley or Class C motorhome rental in Gurley on RVezy comes with a queen or king bed plus convertible dinette/bunks (sleeping 4 to 8), a full kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave, sink, and cookware, a wet or dry bath with shower and toilet, roof AC, furnace, and seatbelted seating for travel. Many include a flatscreen TV, outdoor speakers, and a propane grill. Wi-Fi hotspots and generators are common add-ons; just check the listing's amenity list. Pro tip: filter for Generator if you're planning a boondocking night at the Bankhead National Forest, about 90 minutes west of Gurley, where there are no electric hookups.
fs.usda.gov/alabamaWhat add-ons and pickup options should I look at when booking?
This is where you can really tailor your trip. Popular add-ons on a rent an RV in Gurley booking include linen and kitchen kits ($35 to $75), generators ($15 to $40 per day), portable grills, bike racks, camping chairs, and Starlink/Wi-Fi hotspots. Pickup is usually at the host's home in Gurley, Brownsboro, Owens Cross Roads, or Huntsville, and many hosts offer delivery to your campground for a per-mile fee. Mileage policies vary (often 100 free miles/night, with unlimited-mileage rigs available too), so check the listing details. Pro tip: bundle the linen kit plus delivery for your first trip, you'll arrive to a made-up bed and a ready-to-go RV with zero setup stress.
huntsville.org/How does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is straightforward and secure. When you book a family RV trip in Gurley on RVezy, you pay through the platform using a credit or debit card, never in cash to the host. You will see the nightly rate, cleaning fee, protection plan, and any add-ons in a clear total before confirming. A refundable security deposit is held separately from your booking payment around the time of pickup and released after the host confirms the RV came back clean and undamaged. Do a quick walk-around video with the host at pickup and drop-off, it is the best way to ensure a smooth deposit refund.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksWhat are the best road trip routes starting from Gurley?
Gurley sits in a sweet spot for Southern road trips. A classic RV road trip from Gurley heads east on US-72 to Chattanooga (75 miles) for Lookout Mountain and Ruby Falls, then up to the Great Smoky Mountains (another 135 miles) for Cades Cove and Gatlinburg. Southbound, you can reach Birmingham (100 miles) for Civil Rights history, then continue to Gulf Shores (310 miles total) for white-sand beaches at Gulf State Park. A shorter loop takes you to Lake Guntersville State Park (40 miles south) for eagle-watching in January. Pro tip: do the Natchez Trace Parkway northbound from Tupelo, MS, it's RV-friendly with no commercial traffic and stunning fall color.
