Campgrounds near Leesburg, Alabama
Leesburg sits on the southern shore of Weiss Lake in Cherokee County, northeast Alabama, at the foothills of the Appalachian range. The town is best known as a base for anglers targeting crappie, bass, and catfish on Weiss Lake, and for road access to Lookout Mountain, Cherokee Rock Village, and Little River Canyon National Preserve. RV travelers use it as a low-traffic alternative to busier lake towns in Georgia and Tennessee.
Most private RV parks in the area cluster along the lake shoreline and the arms of the Coosa and Little Rivers. Joyland RV Park and Weiss Lake RV Park sit close to the water with full-hookup sites geared toward fishing trips, while Chesnut Bay Resort operates as a larger destination park with marina access. Bay Springs Motel and Campground and Little River RV Park Campground round out the options with smaller, quieter footprints.
Road access is via US-411 and Alabama Route 68, both drivable in a Class C or travel trailer without difficulty.
Things to do around Leesburg
Weiss Lake is the primary draw. The reservoir covers roughly 30,200 acres with about 447 miles of shoreline, and it is widely marketed as the Crappie Capital of the World. Visitors commonly launch boats from public ramps or from marinas attached to lakefront parks like Chesnut Bay Resort and Weiss Lake RV Park.
Off the water, Cherokee Rock Village on Lookout Mountain offers hiking, bouldering, and long views over the lake. Little River Canyon National Preserve sits about 30 to 40 minutes east and includes waterfalls, scenic drives along the rim, and swimming holes in summer.
Families often combine a lake stay at Joyland RV Park or Little River RV Park Campground with day trips to DeSoto State Park, Noccalula Falls in Gadsden, and the shops in downtown Centre.

December - February
54° / 34°F 130 mmMild but wet; some private parks reduce hours
Spring is the busiest RV season. February through April brings the peak crappie bite on Weiss Lake, and lakefront parks fill quickly on weekends. Daytime temperatures are mild and severe thunderstorms are possible, so travelers should check NOAA alerts before travel and secure awnings at night.
Summer is hot and humid with afternoon storms common. Lake use peaks around Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Labor Day, and shaded sites at parks like Chesnut Bay Resort and Bay Springs Motel and Campground book out well in advance. Little River Canyon swimming areas are most popular in June and July.
Fall brings cooler nights, lower humidity, and a second fishing push in October and November as bass move shallow. Winter is mild by northern standards but wet, and some smaller private parks reduce hours or close amenity buildings between December and February. Confirm operating status directly with the campground before booking a cold-weather trip.

Amazing host! I will be trying to use Ryan again next year for the same event!
Marcus R. - Oct 2026
Working with Ryan was a pleasure. He was friendly, accommodating, & helped me lug my heavy cooler into the camper. He was available for questions and for the most part, answered quickly- there was only one time there was a delay, but he was busy with work. If I’m in the area again, I will definitely use his service. The camper is well maintained.
Marie B. - Jul 2026
Lorie6 trips - Joined Dec 2024
Lori was very accommodating and patient as our arrival time went astray and we arrived much later than we wanted. Since this was my first time renting, I was a bit ignorant of everything but she was great about walking me through everything I needed to know and was communicative during the entire process!
Derek V. - Nov 2025
Lorie was great to work with. The camper was super clean and stocked with goodies. Will be booking again with Lorie!!!!

How to book a campsite near Leesburg
All of the campgrounds on the shortlist above are privately operated. Reservations are handled directly by each park by phone or through their own websites, not through Recreation.gov or ReserveAmerica. Weiss Lake is an Alabama Power reservoir rather than a federal or state park, so there is no central booking portal for its shoreline.
For spring crappie season and summer holiday weekends, plan to book lakefront full-hookup sites six to eight weeks ahead at Chesnut Bay Resort, Weiss Lake RV Park, and Joyland RV Park. Weekday and shoulder-season stays at Bay Springs Motel and Campground or Little River RV Park Campground can often be booked within a week.
For state park backup options, DeSoto State Park on Lookout Mountain uses the Alabama State Parks reservation system, which opens bookings twelve months in advance for out-of-state visitors and thirteen months in advance for Alabama residents.
What to expect at Leesburg campgrounds
Expect small to mid-size private parks oriented around fishing rather than resort amenities. Most sites offer 30 or 50 amp electric, water, and sewer, with gravel or grass pads. Cell coverage is generally reliable near town but weakens on the far arms of the lake and inside Little River Canyon.
Lakefront parks such as Chesnut Bay Resort and Weiss Lake RV Park typically include boat ramps, fish-cleaning stations, and docks. Joyland RV Park and Bay Springs Motel and Campground are smaller and quieter, better suited to couples or families who do not need a marina on site.
Restocking is straightforward: Centre, about ten minutes away, has a Walmart, propane, and grocery. Bring insect repellent for spring and summer, and expect red clay after rain.

rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Leesburg%2C%20AlabamaWhat kind of driver's license do I need to rent an RV in Leesburg, Alabama?
Great news: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Leesburg, Alabama. No commercial driver's license (CDL) or special RV endorsement is required for any motorhome or trailer you will find on RVezy, including larger Class A rigs. Approved drivers are generally required to be at least 25 years old, and RVezy verifies your ID during the booking process. Visiting from outside the U.S.? Bring an International Driving Permit (IDP) alongside your home license. Most first-time renters are surprised how simple it is to roll out toward Weiss Lake.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsIs RV rental insurance and roadside assistance included?
Yes, and this is one of the biggest reasons travelers feel confident booking. Every RV rental in Leesburg, AL through RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you are covered for common damage scenarios and for help with flat tires, lockouts, jump-starts, and towing. During checkout you choose the protection level that fits your trip, giving you control over your coverage. Protection plans vary by tier, so review the inclusions before you confirm. That way, if a curious deer dings the bumper on County Road 44, you can focus on the lake instead of the paperwork.
rvezy.com/insurance-and-protectionWhat's the cancellation policy if my Weiss Lake trip plans change?
Booking is low-risk: RVezy sets the cancellation policy at the platform level, not the individual host, so you get consistent, predictable terms across every listing in Leesburg. There is a money-back grace period right after booking, with additional flexibility based on how far out your trip is. If a host cancels on you, RVezy issues a refund or travel credit so you are not left stranded. If a spring storm rolls across Sand Mountain the week of your trip, reach out to RVezy support and the team will walk you through your options.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a Leesburg RV trip?
Absolutely, Leesburg is a fantastic spot for a pet-friendly RV rental. Many hosts on RVezy welcome dogs, so just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter to see listings that fit. Weiss Lake is dog-friendly: most local campgrounds allow leashed pets, and the sandy shoreline is perfect for a swim after a hot afternoon. Bring a long lead so your pup can splash safely near the fishing piers. Pro tip: message the host before booking if you are traveling with multiple dogs or a larger breed, and confirm any small pet cleaning fee upfront so check-out is seamless.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Leesburg%2C%20AlabamaCan the RV be delivered to my campsite at Weiss Lake?
Yes, RV delivery in Leesburg is one of the smartest moves for first-timers and families. Many RVezy hosts in Cherokee County will drop the RV right at your reserved site at lakeside campgrounds around Weiss Lake, level it, hook up water, sewer, and 30/50-amp electric, then walk you through everything before they leave. You skip the towing, the backing-in stress, and the setup learning curve. Use the Delivery filter to see hosts who offer this service, and message them with your campground address so they can quote the delivery fee, which is usually based on mileage from their home base.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Leesburg%2C%20AlabamaHow far can I drive, and what are popular road trips from Leesburg?
You have incredible range from Leesburg, and some hosts even offer RV rental with unlimited mileage packages. Popular road trips from Leesburg fall within an easy day's drive: Little River Canyon National Preserve is roughly 25 to 35 miles north, Cheaha State Park (Alabama's highest point) sits about 70 miles south, downtown Chattanooga, TN is roughly 90 miles north, Atlanta, GA is about 100 miles east, and the Great Smoky Mountains are around 200 miles northeast. Mileage policies are set by each host, so check the listing details and message them if you are planning a bigger Leesburg RV trip loop. Pro tip: ask about a flat-rate mileage package upfront if you are heading toward the Smokies.
nps.gov/liri/index.htmWhere should I stay for RV camping in Leesburg?
You have great options for RV camping in Leesburg around Weiss Lake. Local favorites include Weiss Lake RV Park on the north shore, with a friendly family-owned feel and lake access; Chesnut Bay Resort, a full-amenity property with pools and a swim beach; and a handful of quieter lakeside campgrounds tucked along the coves. For state-park lovers, Cherokee Rock Village sits about 20 minutes away atop Sand Mountain with jaw-dropping bluff views, and DeSoto State Park is a scenic option about an hour northeast. Book lake-view sites 2 to 3 months ahead for summer weekends and holiday weeks.
alapark.com/parks/desoto-state-parkWhen is the best time to take an RV trip to Leesburg?
Leesburg has one of the longest RV seasons in the region thanks to its mild north Alabama climate. The sweet spot is mid-March through early June, when daytime highs sit in the 70s to low 80s, dogwoods bloom around Weiss Lake, and crappie fishing peaks (Leesburg is known as the Crappie Capital of the World). September and October are equally pleasant, with lower humidity and fall color on Lookout Mountain. July and August are hot and humid (highs commonly in the upper 80s to low 90s with afternoon thunderstorms), great for swimming but plan around the AC. Winter stays mild with highs often in the 50s, so off-season RV camping Leesburg style is genuinely comfortable.
weather.gov/bmx/I've never rented an RV before. Will I be okay?
You will be in great hands. First time renting an RV is easier than most people expect, especially in a small, friendly town like Leesburg. Every RVezy host gives you a full walkthrough at pickup: how to operate the slides, water heater, generator, awning, and dump valves, plus tips specific to their rig. You can message your host beforehand with any question, and RVezy support is available throughout your trip. If you would rather skip driving altogether, book a host who offers delivery and setup at your campground, then just unlock the door and start the vacation.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/categories/360002180594-Renting-an-RVWhat if something goes wrong on the road?
You are never stranded. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, covering tire changes, jump-starts, lockouts, towing, and emergency fuel delivery. From Leesburg, help can reach you quickly on the main corridors like AL-68, US-411, and I-59 toward Gadsden or Fort Payne. Save the roadside number in your phone before you leave the driveway, and reach out to your host too: local owners often know the fastest mobile RV tech in Cherokee County. Between platform support and your host's local knowledge, small hiccups stay small.
rvezy.com/insurance-and-protectionCan I take the RV across state lines or into Canada?
Yes, interstate travel within the U.S. is welcome, and Leesburg is perfectly positioned for it: you are about 20 minutes from the Georgia line, 90 minutes from Tennessee, and a popular RV road trip from Leesburg runs north into the Smokies or south to the Gulf Coast (around 6 hours to Gulf Shores). Cross-border travel into Canada is generally not supported for U.S.-based RVezy rentals because of insurance coverage limits, and travel into Mexico is not permitted. For U.S. trips, confirm your mileage allowance with the host and you are good to roll.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat about fuel costs and MPG?
Fuel is very manageable in this region. Travel trailers do not burn fuel themselves; your tow vehicle does. Class B campervans typically average 18 to 22 mpg, Class C motorhomes get roughly 8 to 12 mpg, and Class A rigs run about 6 to 10 mpg. Alabama consistently has some of the lowest gas prices in the country, and there are convenient fuel stops in Leesburg, Centre, and along I-59 in Gadsden. For a 4-night Weiss Lake loop under 200 miles, budget roughly $80 to $150 in fuel for a Class C. Pro tip: fill up in Centre before heading out, where prices often beat the lake-area pumps.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground?
Reserve early to lock in the best spots. For Weiss Lake's premier lakefront sites, book 2 to 3 months ahead for summer weekends and holiday weeks like Memorial Day, July 4th, and Labor Day. Mid-week stays and shoulder-season trips in March, April, October, and November can often be grabbed 2 to 3 weeks out. Alabama State Parks like nearby DeSoto State Park use ReserveAmerica and open reservations up to 11 months in advance. Pro tip: pair an early RV booking on RVezy with your campground reservation so you can sync your dates without scrambling.
alapark.com/parks/desoto-state-parkWhat are driving conditions like around Leesburg?
Driving around Leesburg is refreshingly stress-free compared to a big-city RV experience. Roads are mostly two-lane rural highways like AL-68 and US-411, with light traffic, wide shoulders, and easy pull-offs. The biggest things to watch are rolling Sand Mountain grades, a few low-hanging tree branches on county roads, and afternoon summer thunderstorms that can pop up fast (check radar before you tow). Avoid the steepest backroads up Lookout Mountain in a Class A, and stick to AL-68 east to reach the Mentone area. Near the Weiss Dam, lanes can be narrow, so take it slow if you are driving anything longer than 30 feet.
dot.state.al.us/What amenities do Leesburg campgrounds offer?
Leesburg-area campgrounds are well equipped for any rig. Most lakeside parks around Weiss Lake offer full hookups (30 and 50-amp electric, water, sewer), Wi-Fi at the office, bathhouses with hot showers, laundry, and on-site dump stations. Resort-style properties like Chesnut Bay add pools, mini-golf, and boat ramps, while smaller parks feature sandy swim beaches and fishing piers. Need to top off potable water or dump between stops? Many parks offer day-use dump access for a small fee. Pro tip: bring a 25-foot drinking-water hose and a 50-to-30-amp dogbone adapter so you are ready for any pedestal configuration on the lake.
alapark.com/What's inside a typical RV rental in Leesburg?
You will find more comfort than you expect. A typical motorhome rental in Leesburg comes fully equipped: a queen or king bed, sometimes bunks, a full kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave, and sink, an indoor bathroom with shower, roof AC, furnace, and dining seating with seatbelts for travel. Most listings include a TV, and many offer Wi-Fi boosters or a generator for off-grid stretches. Campervan rental Leesburg options (Class B) are compact but clever, with convertible beds and wet baths. Check the listing's amenity list and add-on menu for extras like outdoor grills, kayaks, or Starlink, and message the host if you want bedding and kitchen kits included.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Leesburg%2C%20AlabamaWhat add-ons and pickup options should I know about?

Popular add-ons include linen and kitchen packages, generators or extra propane, camp chairs, outdoor grills, fishing gear, kayaks or SUPs (perfect for Weiss Lake), and Wi-Fi hotspots. rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Leesburg%2C%20AlabamaHow does payment and the security deposit work?
Payment is smooth and transparent. When you book an RV in Leesburg through RVezy, you pay securely online with a credit or debit card; no cash changes hands with the host. A refundable security deposit is placed on your card before pickup (commonly in the $500 to $1,500 range depending on the rig) and is released after the trip assuming the RV comes back in the same condition. To avoid any issues, do a quick walkaround video at pickup and drop-off, return the rig clean with tanks dumped if required, and stay within your mileage and generator-hour allowances. Everything is documented in your RVezy dashboard for total peace of mind.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksWhat's a local insider tip for first-time visitors to Leesburg?
Here is the local secret: Leesburg is known as the Crappie Capital of the World, and Weiss Lake's roughly 30,000 acres also produce strong largemouth bass and striped bass fishing. Even if you do not fish, head up to Cherokee Rock Village, a free-to-visit boulder field on Sand Mountain (about 20 minutes from town) with panoramic views of Weiss Lake that locals call the best sunset spot in northeast Alabama. Pair that with a morning at Little River Canyon's DeSoto Falls and you have a family RV trip Leesburg residents themselves brag about. Hit Book and start packing.
