Campgrounds and RV parks near Priceville, AL

Wheeler Lake is the local hub for boating and fishing, with bass, bream, and catfish the headline catches. Public boat ramps are scattered along both shores, and the Tennessee River corridor supports year-round paddling and wildlife watching. Wheeler National Wildlife Refuge, established in 1938, spans 35,000 acres along the river and is a top wildlife-watching destination for waterfowl, cranes, deer, and songbirds. In winter it hosts thousands of sandhill cranes along with a small number of whooping cranes, best viewed from the two-story Wildlife Observation Building near the Visitor Center. Families typically pair outdoor time with the U.S. Space & Rocket Center in Huntsville, the Cook Museum of Natural Science in Decatur, and Point Mallard Park, home to one of America's first wave pools plus a wooded campground and eighteen-hole golf course.

Spring and fall are the strongest windows for RV travel in the Priceville area. March through May brings warming temperatures and active fishing on Wheeler Lake, but March is also the wettest month of the year, so rigs should be prepared for thunderstorms. Fall shifts drier and cooler, with reliable weekends through October and into November. Summer runs hot and humid, with afternoon storms common. It is also the busiest booking window because school is out and Point Mallard's seasonal waterpark and Decatur festivals draw regional traffic. Point Mallard hosts the Alabama Jubilee Hot Air Balloon Classic on Memorial Day weekend and the Spirit of America Festival around July 4th. Winter is the quietest camping season but the most rewarding for wildlife. Sandhill cranes begin arriving at Wheeler in late November and numbers peak in early January, with the best viewing from the Wildlife Observation Building. The Wheeler Wildlife Refuge Association hosts the Festival of the Cranes at multiple venues across Decatur on the second weekend in January.

Sites at Priceville-area RV parks are generally level with gravel or paved pads and full hookups, including 30- and 50-amp service at most locations. Shade varies: lakeside sections at Jay Landings tend to be more open with water views, while Point Mallard and inland parks offer wooded pine cover. Cell coverage is reliable on the major carriers throughout Priceville and Decatur. Grocery, fuel, and RV supply stops cluster along U.S. 31 and near I-65, both within a short drive of the campgrounds listed. Expect a wildlife-active setting. Wheeler National Wildlife Refuge borders the lake and creek network, so deer, waterfowl, and songbirds are regular sights around campgrounds. Store food securely, keep pets leashed, and watch for standing water after heavy spring rains, which have periodically affected low-lying sites at Point Mallard.
