Campgrounds and RV parks near Selmont-West Selmont, AL

Fishing and paddling anchor most trips in this area. Paul M Grist State Park centers on a 100-acre lake stocked with bass, bluegill, redear sunfish, and catfish. Roland Cooper State Park sits on the Alabama River and Dannelly Reservoir, known for strong bass fishing and open water for kayaking and canoeing. On land, Roland Cooper appears on the Alabama Black Belt Birding Trail, with raptors, waterfowl, and songbirds common, and bald eagles and osprey present most of the year. The park is also a Bortle Class 2 dark-sky site, making it a strong stop for stargazing. In Selma itself, families can visit the National Voting Rights Museum, the Old Depot Museum, and the Old Cahawba Archaeological Park at the site of Alabama's first state capital.

Paul M Grist and Roland Cooper both operate year-round, though staffing and hours can be lighter outside the April through October window. Hurricane remnants can reach central Alabama from June through November, so travelers should monitor National Hurricane Center advisories in late summer.

Roland Cooper offers 41 improved RV sites with full hookups, accommodates big rigs, and provides restrooms, showers, a dump station, and a boat launch. Paul M Grist runs a smaller, quieter operation with 11 RV sites beside the lake and a self-service check-in system when staff are off site. Cell service can be limited at the more rural state parks, so travelers relying on connectivity should plan accordingly. Pets are welcome at most private parks with standard leash rules, though Roland Cooper's improved campground has restrictions to check before arrival.
