North Alabama has a humid subtropical climate with four distinct seasons. Winters are cool and often the wettest stretch of the year, with December through March accounting for a large share of annual precipitation. Occasional snow falls, though seasonal totals are usually light. Winter is the prime window for viewing sandhill and whooping cranes at Wheeler National Wildlife Refuge, with birds arriving in late November and numbers peaking in early January. Spring brings warming temperatures, wildflowers, and an active severe-weather season with thunderstorms and occasional tornadoes. Campground demand rises quickly around spring break and holiday weekends. Summer is hot and humid, with highs regularly in the upper 80s to low 90s and frequent afternoon thunderstorms. It is peak season for river camping, boating, and swimming, so riverfront sites at Ditto Landing Marina & Campground and Jay Landings Marina and RV Park book up well ahead. Fall is drier and cooler, with color in October and November and easier last-minute availability at most parks.

Sites near Somerville skew toward level, back-in pads with 30 and 50 amp service and full or partial hookups at most private parks. On-site Wi-Fi varies by property, and cell coverage is generally reliable across Morgan and Madison counties. Terrain is gently rolling with wooded lots, so big rigs should confirm site length and turning access when booking. Summer heat and humidity are significant, and biting insects are common near the river; screen rooms, fans, and repellent help. Spring and early summer storms can be intense. Check each campground's severe-weather shelter plan on arrival, and monitor NWS Huntsville alerts during watches and warnings.
