Camping near Sylvania, Alabama
Sylvania sits on Sand Mountain in DeKalb County, northeast Alabama, within a short drive of Lookout Mountain and the Little River watershed. RV travelers use the town as a base for exploring one of the most concentrated clusters of waterfalls, canyons, and state-managed forest in the Southeast. Nearby options range from small private parks like Wills Creek RV Park and Tranquility RV and Campground to the larger, amenity-heavy Main - DeSoto State Park campground.
DeSoto State Park is a roughly 3,500-acre nature preserve on Lookout Mountain featuring forests, waterfalls, and rugged mountain scenery, located a short drive northeast of Fort Payne. Just south of the park, Little River Canyon National Preserve protects the canyon and Little River, one of the longest mountaintop rivers in the country.
The mix of state park, national preserve, and private RV parks gives families flexibility on hookups, price point, and proximity to trailheads. Cell service can be inconsistent on the mountain, so plan navigation and reservations before arrival.
Things to do near Sylvania
Waterfalls and canyon overlooks anchor most itineraries. DeSoto Falls, part of DeSoto State Park, drops around 104 feet and is one of Alabama's tallest waterfalls. The park supports hiking, biking, picnicking, wildflower walks, swimming, and paddling on quieter stretches of the West Fork Little River, plus a seasonal pool and a network of well-marked trails.
At Little River Canyon National Preserve, families typically drive the canyon rim road, stop at overlooks such as Little River Falls and Grace's High Falls, and picnic at Canyon Mouth Park. Winter and spring bring higher flows, with gentler paddling above Little River Falls and technical whitewater below.
Fort Payne, Mentone, and the Sand Mountain small towns add restaurants, shops, and cultural stops within a short drive.

Spring is the busiest and arguably best season on Lookout Mountain. DeSoto State Park notes that March, April, and May are typically the busiest months with the best weather, so reservations should be made well in advance. Wildflowers and waterfall flow peak in these months, and trails are cool enough for long hikes.
Summer brings heat and humidity, with afternoon thunderstorms common. Little River flow tapers off as the season progresses. The Little River is largely rain-fed, and by mid to late summer many stretches run shallow or nearly dry in drought years, which limits paddling but opens up wading and swimming holes.
Fall delivers hardwood color and cooler nights, drawing weekend RV traffic to the mountain. Winter camping is quieter, with occasional cold snaps and the wettest stretch of the year. Some services in the preserve run shorter hours during the off-season.
How to book a campground near Sylvania
The Main - DeSoto State Park campground is reserved through the Alabama State Parks system. Advanced reservations may be made up to one year in advance, with a maximum stay of 14 nights, extended to 31 nights from November 1 to March 31 at select parks, and a small non-refundable reservation fee per site. Campground check-in is 2 PM and check-out is 11 AM. Phone bookings for the campground and buddy sites go through the park's Country Store.
DeSoto's primitive tent sites are available on a first-come, first-served basis, so arriving on a weekday is ideal during busy spring and summer weekends.
Private parks such as Wills Creek RV Park, Thunder Canyon Campground RV Park, Little River RV Park Campground, and Tranquility RV and Campground are booked directly with the operator. Call ahead in peak season, especially for pull-through and 50-amp sites.
What to expect on-site
At Main - DeSoto State Park, the improved campground has 94 full-hookup sites with two centrally located comfort stations offering restrooms, showers, and coin-operated laundry. Each site has a picnic table and grill, with 50/30 amp service and cable TV. Wi-Fi hotspots are available at the comfort stations, but coverage does not reach every campsite, and cell service can be spotty across carriers.
Sites include a mix of back-in and pull-through options with room for slide-outs; leveling equipment is a good idea on wooded loops. Access requires navigating DeSoto Parkway's winding mountain route, which can be tight for larger rigs. Firewood, ice, and basic supplies are available at the camp store, with full grocery shopping about 15 minutes away in Fort Payne. Private parks near Sylvania tend to be smaller, quieter, and closer to town amenities.

Travel trailers typically run about $90 to $175 per night, Class C motorhomes $175 to $300, and larger Class A rigs $225 to $425. Use the Delivery filter when searching, and you'll see each host's delivery radius and per-mile fee. They'll level the RV, connect water and power, walk you through every system, and pick it up when you're done. It's the easiest way to enjoy RV camping in Sylvania without ever towing.

Sylvania sits at roughly 1,500 feet on Sand Mountain, which gives it a milder climate than lowland Alabama. The sweet spots are April through early June (highs 70 to 82 F, blooming mountain laurel and rhododendron at DeSoto State Park) and mid-September through early November (crisp days, peak fall color around mid-to-late October). Summer highs hit the upper 80s with humidity, but elevation keeps nights pleasant in the 60s. Winters are mild with occasional frost, daytime highs of 50 to 55 F, and the bonus of bare-tree canyon views at Little River Canyon. Alabama gas prices typically run 20 to 30 cents below the national average, with stations in Rainsville, Fort Payne, and Henagar offering the best diesel access. For a 3-day, 300-mile loop through DeSoto State Park, Little River Canyon, and Mentone, budget $100 to $180 in fuel for a mid-size Class C.
