Camping near Trinity, Alabama
Trinity sits in Morgan County on the south side of the Tennessee River in north Alabama, a short drive from Decatur and roughly 30 miles west of Huntsville. The area is defined by Wheeler Lake, a TVA reservoir on the Tennessee River covering about 67,070 acres with more than 1,000 miles of shoreline, and by the 35,000-acre Wheeler National Wildlife Refuge along the river between Huntsville and Decatur. Both draw RV travelers year-round for fishing, paddling, and wildlife viewing.
Most campgrounds near Trinity are private lakefront parks with full or partial hookups. Jay Landings Marina and RV Park sits near the water north of town, while Beyonder Getaway Wheeler Lake and Beyonder Getaway at Wheeler Lake offer riverside sites a short drive west toward Rogersville. Swan Creek Community and Northgate RV Travel Park provide additional options in the Athens and Tanner area across the river.
Access is easy from Interstate 65 via Decatur exits, and US 31 and Alabama Highway 20/24 connect the region. Big-rig travelers generally find level pull-through or back-in sites at the larger parks.
Things to do around Trinity
Wheeler Lake is the main draw. The Tennessee River and its embayments offer bass, crappie, catfish, sunfish, and sauger fishing, with public boat ramps scattered along the reservoir. Kayakers and canoeists have a large expanse of sloughs, creeks, and main-channel water to explore.
Wheeler National Wildlife Refuge has a Visitor Center and a two-story Wildlife Observation Building reached by a short accessible trail from the parking lot. The observation building is temperature-controlled and equipped with spotting scopes overlooking a waterfowl display pool. In winter, thousands of sandhill cranes and a small number of endangered whooping cranes can be viewed from inside the building.
Families staying near Decatur can also reach Point Mallard Park, a large city park in Decatur that includes a seasonal water park, a golf course, a paved multi-use trail, and an ice complex.

Spring and fall are the most comfortable seasons for RV travel in north Alabama. Daytime highs sit in the 60s to low 80s, humidity is lower than midsummer, and lake levels support fishing and paddling. Spring migration from March through May brings warblers, tanagers, and shorebirds to the refuge, and April is typically the wettest month of the year in the Decatur area.
Summer runs long and hot, with July highs averaging near 89 degrees Fahrenheit and high humidity. Lakefront sites at the private parks book heavily around Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Labor Day. Point Mallard's water park operates seasonally through the summer months.
Winter is the signature season at Wheeler National Wildlife Refuge. Thousands of ducks, geese, sandhill cranes, and a smaller number of whooping cranes gather on the impoundments, with cranes typically arriving in late November, peaking in early January, and lingering into mid-February. A seasonal waterfowl sanctuary at the refuge closes select areas from November 15 through late February to protect wintering birds.
Booking a campsite
The private RV parks near Trinity, including Jay Landings Marina and RV Park, Beyonder Getaway Wheeler Lake, Beyonder Getaway at Wheeler Lake, Swan Creek Community, and Northgate RV Travel Park, take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone. Waterfront and pull-through sites are the first to fill on holiday weekends.
Joe Wheeler State Park, west of Trinity on Wheeler Lake, books through the Alabama State Parks reservation system at alapark.com, with reservations accepted up to one year in advance. Point Mallard Campground in Decatur reserves through the City of Decatur.
For peak periods, particularly Memorial Day weekend during the Alabama Jubilee Hot Air Balloon Classic, Independence Day, and fall wildlife-viewing weekends, book several weeks ahead. Shoulder months in April, May, September, and October typically have better availability.
What to expect on the ground
Expect a mix of lakefront and wooded sites. Larger private parks around Wheeler Lake offer full hookups, boat ramps, and sandy beach areas, with some sites that back to the water. A few campgrounds have gravel or rocky pads, so leveling blocks and pad mats are useful.
Cell service is generally reliable near Decatur, Trinity, and Athens, though signal can drop inside the refuge and along wooded shorelines. Wi-Fi quality at campgrounds varies. Summers are hot and humid, so shaded sites and functional air conditioning matter.
Wildlife is part of the experience. Deer, raccoons, and wading birds are common; keep pets leashed near water and food secured. Watch for ticks and chiggers on trails from spring through fall, and pack insect repellent.
