Campgrounds and RV parks near Valley Head, AL

DeSoto State Park is the anchor attraction, with roughly 15 miles of hiking trails and about 5 miles of mountain biking trails, an Olympic-size swimming pool, and a CCC-era nature center with interpretive programs. The 104-foot DeSoto Falls and the West Fork of the Little River sit inside or adjacent to the park and are the main draws for families with kids. A short drive south leads to Little River Canyon National Preserve, where sightseeing along the rim parkway is the most common activity, with hiking, photography, fishing, and bird watching also popular. Blue Hole, a calm swimming area about a quarter mile from Little River Falls, is suited to families with small children, though currents elsewhere on the river can be strong. Mentone, a small mountain village a few minutes from Valley Head, has cafes, art galleries, and shops for a low-key half day.

Spring and fall are the two strongest windows. March, April, and May are often busy with the best weather, so making camping reservations in advance is recommended. Wildflowers typically peak from late April into June, and waterfall flow is strongest after spring rains. Fall brings hardwood color across the plateau and cooler nights that suit RV travel. Summer is hot and humid, though the mountain elevation, tree cover, and river help take the edge off. Highs in July and August routinely reach the upper 80s. Afternoon thunderstorms are frequent, and swimming holes along the Little River see their heaviest use. Book summer weekends well ahead, particularly around holiday weekends. Winter is cooler and quieter, with overnight lows in January averaging right around freezing. Winter camping is possible with appropriate cold-weather gear. Northern Alabama also has a secondary severe-weather season in November and December in addition to the spring tornado season, so travelers should monitor forecasts.

Access to DeSoto State Park is by mountain road. Reviewers describe DeSoto Parkway's winding mountain route as challenging for larger RVs, so renters in longer coaches should plan the approach in daylight and follow the park's written driving directions rather than relying on GPS alone. Sites in the state park are wooded and set on varied terrain. Some pads are slightly sloped, so leveling blocks are useful, and most sites have substantial shade from mature trees. Improved sites offer 50/30 amp service, cable TV, and sewer, water, and electric hookups, though Wi-Fi reaches only the comfort stations and camp store, not every campsite. The park store handles firewood, ice, and basic supplies, with full grocery shopping about 15 minutes away in Fort Payne. Cell coverage on the mountain is spotty, so download maps before arriving.
