Campgrounds and RV parks near West Point, AL

Lewis Smith Lake is the main draw. The lake is managed by Alabama Power, covers over 21,000 acres, has a maximum depth of 264 feet at the dam, and is the deepest lake in Alabama, with clear water suited to boating, swimming, and striped and spotted bass fishing. Arrowhead RV Resort at Smith Lake and Quail Creek RV Resort put families within easy reach of ramps and marinas. Inland, visitors camping near Cullman can access the trails of Bankhead National Forest to the west, and Rickwood Caverns State Park offers underground exploration. Closer to base, the city of Cullman offers Ave Maria Grotto, Clarkson Covered Bridge, Sportsman Lake Park, and Smith Lake Park events, which work well as half-day trips from Cullman Campground or Unhitched Cullman RV Park.

The Cullman area has a humid subtropical climate with a long warm season. Summers typically bring daily highs over 90°F with frequent heat index values around 100°F, while winters are mild with average daily highs around 50°F and occasional snowfall. Afternoon thunderstorms are common from late spring through summer, and remnants of Gulf tropical systems can push heavy rain into the area in late summer and early fall. Peak camping demand runs from Memorial Day through Labor Day, driven by lake use and school breaks. At county-run Smith Lake Park, peak season runs May 1 through September 30, with extended Friday and Saturday hours, and holiday weekends fill first. Spring and fall bring milder temperatures, lower humidity, and better hiking conditions in Bankhead National Forest. Winter camping is workable but cool and often wet. Smith Lake Park is open for year round camping, and private RV parks in the corridor typically stay open through winter, though some amenities such as pools and beach areas close outside peak months.

Expect a mix of pine and hardwood shade, rolling terrain, and red-clay soils. Sites in the corridor near I-65 tend to be level with paved or gravel pads and 30/50-amp service; lakefront resorts closer to Smith Lake often step down toward the water, so pad angles vary. Cell service is generally reliable along the I-65 side and spottier down the county roads toward the lake. Humidity is a real factor from June through August; awnings, fans, and bug spray earn their keep. Wildlife is limited to deer, raccoons, and songbirds, but food should still be stored securely. Groceries, fuel, propane, and RV parts are easy to source in Cullman, and Huntsville and Birmingham are each roughly an hour away for larger errands or day trips.
