Eielson Air Force Base sits along the Richardson Highway in Interior Alaska, about 25 miles southeast of Fairbanks. RV travelers use it as a launch point for the Tanana Valley, the Chena and Salcha river systems, and day trips into the White Mountains and Chena River State Recreation Area. Most nearby campgrounds are clustered along the Richardson Highway corridor and are easy to reach in a rental rig. The closest option is Chena Lake Recreation Area Fairbanks North Star Borough, a county-managed park with camping spread across Lake Park and River Park on 260-acre Chena Lake. Riverview RV Park and Birch Lake State Recreation Site round out the corridor with private-park amenities and lake access respectively.

Reservation systems vary by land manager. Alaska State Parks sites at Harding Lake and Birch Lake are booked through the state's ReserveAmerica portal, with sites reservable up to 7 months in advance, so mid-summer weekends should be locked in early. Campgrounds within Chena River State Recreation Area, including Rosehip Campground, are first-come, first-served and are not reservable online; only cabins and shelters can be booked ahead. Chena Lake Recreation Area Fairbanks North Star Borough operates on a mostly first-come, first-served basis, with limited reservable spaces and pavilion rentals handled through the Fairbanks North Star Borough Parks and Recreation office. Camping is limited to five consecutive nights or 10 nights within a 30-day period. Private options like Riverview RV Park take direct bookings and are often the fallback when public sites are full.
