Campgrounds and RV parks near Tok, AK

Tok is a staging point for the eastern Alaska Range and the Wrangell-St. Elias region. The Tok Cutoff heads southwest toward Glennallen and provides highway access to Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and Preserve, the largest national park in the United States. The Taylor Highway runs north to Chicken and Eagle, and the Alaska Highway continues west toward Delta Junction and Fairbanks. Closer to town, the Tok River and nearby lakes support fishing, paddling, and float trips. Tok River State Recreation Site provides river boating and float trip opportunities, sits across from the burned area of the 1990 Tok River Fire, and puts campers within reach of the Alaska Public Lands Information Center in Tok, a useful first stop for maps, trip planning, and ranger information.

The practical RV season in Tok runs from roughly mid-May through mid-September, matching the ice-free, snow-free window on the Alaska Highway. Summers are long and cool, winters are frigid and snowy, and skies are mostly cloudy year round, with temperatures typically ranging from about -15°F to 69°F over the course of a year. June and July bring the longest daylight, warmest temperatures, and peak highway traffic, and commercial parks in Tok run at high occupancy during this window as travelers move between Canada and the Alaska interior. Shoulder seasons are shorter and less predictable. Late May can still see hard frosts, and by mid-September nights drop below freezing and services along the highway begin closing for the season. Precipitation ramps up through summer and peaks in July and August, so late-summer travelers should plan for wet gravel pullouts and muddy sites. Winter camping is limited. Most private RV parks close by early October and reopen in spring, and Alaska State Parks sites in the area are managed as primitive, unstaffed campgrounds during the cold months.

Tok is a small highway service town. Expect fuel, a grocery, a hardware store, restaurants, RV repair, propane, and a dump station, but limited big-box shopping. Cell coverage is reliable in town and spotty on the surrounding highways. The Alaska Public Lands Information Center in Tok is the best local source for road conditions, fire updates, and park information. Campground sites in the area are generally gravel, level, and set among spruce. Tok RV Village Campground and Cabins provides 30 and 50 amp service, pull-throughs, restrooms, free showers, laundry, Wi-Fi, and a dump station. Mosquitoes are heavy from June into August, so bring repellent and screens. Wildlife, including moose and black bear, moves through the highway corridor, so store food and trash securely at any site, private or state.
