Campgrounds near South Van Horn
South Van Horn is a small census-designated place inside the Fairbanks North Star Borough, sitting just south of downtown Fairbanks along Van Horn Road. It functions as a convenient staging area for RV travellers using greater Fairbanks as a base for Interior Alaska trips.
Most overnight options within a short drive are private RV parks along the Chena River corridor and industrial edges of Fairbanks, plus state-run campgrounds up the Elliott and Steese Highways. Ice Art RV Park & Campground, Rivers Edge RV Park and Campground, Tanana Valley Campground and RV Park, and Riverview RV Park cover the in-town, hookup end of the spectrum, while Olnes Pond Campground - Lower Chatanika State Recreation Area offers a more remote, forested experience roughly 20 miles north of Fairbanks at milepost 11 of the Elliott Highway.
Tanana Valley Campground and RV Park sits about ten minutes from downtown Fairbanks and offers both electric and non-electric sites, with fire pits, picnic tables, and Wi-Fi at each site. This mix lets renters choose between serviced hookups close to city amenities and quieter, pond-side sites within a short drive.
Things to do near South Van Horn
Most trips built around South Van Horn use Fairbanks as a base for river time on the Chena and Tanana, day drives up the Steese and Elliott Highways, and northern-lights viewing in the shoulder seasons. The Chatanika River corridor is a common target for paddlers and anglers heading north from town.
The Lower Chatanika State Recreation Area provides access to the Chatanika River and to camping, fishing, picnicking, hiking, berry picking, boating and floating, ATV and snowmachining, ice fishing, dog sledding, night sky viewing, and cross country skiing. The area serves as the take-out point for an all-day float trip that launches from Upper Chatanika State Recreation Site at mile 39 of the Steese Highway.
Olnes Pond itself is a popular spot for anglers and a straightforward half-day outing from a Fairbanks-area RV site, with quiet water and forested surroundings.

The practical RV season in the Fairbanks area is short and clearly defined. Peak use runs from mid-May through mid-September, with June and July drawing the heaviest bookings thanks to long daylight and river access. Daylight peaks near the summer solstice, so renters should plan sleep arrangements for very bright nights.
Shoulder months bring quick weather swings. Late April and early May still see hard freezes and lingering ice on ponds, while September cools rapidly and delivers early aurora viewing as skies darken. The best window for Olnes Pond runs from late spring to early fall, when the road is dry and the area is more accessible.
Winter camping is a niche activity here rather than a mainstream option. Fairbanks has a subarctic climate with very large seasonal temperature contrasts, and winters are very cold with significant snowfall. Most private RV parks either close or run limited services from October through April, and travellers relying on water hookups should confirm winterization status before booking.
How to book campgrounds near South Van Horn
Private RV parks in the Fairbanks area, including Ice Art RV Park & Campground, Rivers Edge RV Park and Campground, Tanana Valley Campground and RV Park, and Riverview RV Park, are booked directly through each operator by phone or website. For peak summer weeks, especially around the solstice and major festivals, renters should reserve several months out.
State-run sites use a different system. Reservable sites within Lower Chatanika State Recreation Area go through the Alaska State Parks ReserveAmerica portal and can be booked up to seven months in advance. However, campsites at Olnes Pond Campground - Lower Chatanika State Recreation Area are first-come, first-served rather than reservable, so arriving early on Friday afternoons is advisable during peak camping season.
What to expect at South Van Horn campgrounds
Expect a mix of urban-edge RV parks close to Fairbanks services and quieter state campgrounds a short drive out of town. Serviced sites cluster along the Chena River and near Van Horn Road, while state sites lean toward vault toilets, fire rings, and self-contained rigs.
Amenities vary sharply between the two categories. In-town parks such as Tanana Valley Campground and RV Park offer electric sites with fire pits, picnic tables, Wi-Fi, showers, coin-operated laundry, and a dump station, though full hookups at each pad are not standard. By contrast, Olnes Pond offers picnic tables, fire rings, and pit toilets, with limited services, so campers should arrive self-sufficient.
Wildlife awareness is part of any Interior Alaska trip. Bears and other wildlife use the river corridors, so food should be stored securely and bear safety guidelines followed.
