Campgrounds and RV parks near Kasilof, AK

Salmon fishing drives most summer trips. The Kasilof River hosts early- and late-run king salmon and a strong sockeye return, with bank access at Crooked Creek State Recreation Site and drift-boat launches near the Kasilof Dock. Guided halibut and salmon charters run out of nearby Ninilchik and Homer. Razor clamming has historically been the signature draw at Clam Gulch State Recreation Area, though the Alaska Department of Fish and Game has kept east-side Cook Inlet beaches closed to clamming in recent seasons. Travelers should confirm status with the department before planning a dig. Beyond fishing, families use Kasilof for beachcombing on Cook Inlet, wildlife watching for moose and bald eagles, day trips to Kenai Fjords National Park out of Seward, and flightseeing or boat access to Lake Clark and Katmai across the inlet.

The practical RV season on the Kenai Peninsula runs from mid-May through mid-September. State recreation areas typically open once snowmelt allows and safe water can be turned on, and they close for the winter after the fall shoulder. Kasilof RV Park and Diamond M Ranch Resort operate on similar summer windows. Late May and June bring the first king salmon run on the Kasilof River, which is when Crooked Creek State Recreation Site is busiest. The heavy sockeye push follows in July and continues to fill riverbank sites. August tapers into silver salmon and cooler, wetter weather. September is the wettest stretch on this side of the inlet and marks the end of most services. Winter travel to Kasilof is possible on maintained highways, but campground facilities are shut down, water is off, and daylight is limited. Spring is generally the driest window, though nights stay cold and many roads to bluffs and beaches remain soft until late May.

Expect a mix of developed private parks and rustic public sites. Full hookups, dump stations, showers, and Wi-Fi are typical at Kasilof RV Park and Diamond M Ranch Resort. State park campgrounds like Crooked Creek State Recreation Site and Clam Gulch State Recreation Area offer picnic tables, fire rings, vault toilets, and potable water, but no hookups or showers. Crooked Creek enforces a 35-foot RV length limit and a 7-day stay limit. Cell coverage is generally reliable along the Sterling Highway corridor and thins on beach access roads. Moose and black and brown bears are active on and near salmon streams, so food storage and clean camps matter, especially at riverbank sites during the July run. Summer daylight stretches past 11 p.m., mosquitoes are heaviest in June and July, and Cook Inlet winds can push cool, damp air onto bluff-top sites even on sunny days.
