Campgrounds and RV parks near Nikiski, AK

Nikiski sits on the northwest coast of the Kenai Peninsula along the Kenai Spur Highway, roughly a three to four hour drive southwest from Anchorage. The area functions as a quieter base for RV travelers exploring the central Kenai Peninsula, with easy access to Cook Inlet beaches, the Swanson River drainage, and the salmon fisheries around Kenai and Soldotna. The closest public campground is Discovery Campground at the end of the Kenai Spur Highway within Captain Cook State Recreation Area, offering wooded sites near Cook Inlet. The campground includes RV-friendly sites, restrooms, picnic shelters, and a boat launch, with additional walk-in and tent areas. Private options south of town add full hookups and amenities suited to larger rigs. Within a short drive, RV travelers can reach Port of Kenai, Diamond M Ranch Resort, King Salmon Motel and RV Park, and Klondike RV Park and Cottages, giving flexibility on hookups, river access, and proximity to town services.

Public and private sites use different systems. Discovery Campground within Captain Cook State Recreation Area is managed by a park concessionaire, and availability runs through that concessionaire and on-site rather than a national portal. Stays at Alaska State Parks campgrounds are typically capped at 15 consecutive days. Private parks such as Diamond M Ranch Resort, King Salmon Motel and RV Park, Klondike RV Park and Cottages, and Port of Kenai take reservations directly through their websites or by phone. For summer travel, reserve full-hookup sites and pull-throughs several months ahead, especially for stays that overlap the July sockeye peak on the Kenai River.
