Campgrounds near Sterling, Alaska
Sterling sits on the Kenai Peninsula about 130 miles south of Anchorage and 10 miles northeast of Soldotna, near the meeting of the Moose and Kenai rivers. It functions as a base camp for RV travelers targeting salmon runs, canoe routes in the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge, and float trips down the Kenai River.
Options range from private full-hookup parks to primitive state sites. Moose Crossing RV Park offers hookups, hot showers, and on-site food trucks along the Sterling Highway. Alaska Canoe and Campgrounds is a smaller private park on the Sterling Highway with rental canoes and rafts for the Swanson River and Swan Lake systems.
For river access, Izaak Walton Campground sits at the confluence of the Moose and Kenai rivers with 31 sites and a boat launch, Funny River Campground has 10 minimally improved sites where the Funny meets the Kenai, and Morgans Landing State Recreation Site offers a large campground on a bluff over the Kenai River with gravel trails down to the water.
Things to do around Sterling
Fishing drives most trips. The Kenai River hosts major runs of king, red, silver, and pink salmon, along with trophy rainbow trout and Dolly Varden. King salmon run mid-June through July, sockeye peak in July, and silvers arrive August through September. Bank access is available from Morgans Landing State Recreation Site and Funny River Campground, and drift-boat guides operate from the Sterling area.
Paddlers use Sterling as the launch point for the Swanson River and Swan Lake canoe routes, a chain of lakes, streams, and portages in the northern Kenai National Wildlife Refuge. Skilak Lake Road, just east of town, opens up hiking trailheads, quiet lake campgrounds, and reliable wildlife viewing for moose, bald eagles, and occasionally brown and black bears.

Peak RV season runs mid-May through mid-September. Most state recreation sites in the Kenai River corridor operate seasonally, with Izaak Walton Campground typically open from mid-May through October and other sites closing once water is shut off. Booking pressure is highest in July, when the sockeye run brings anglers to every river-access campground on the peninsula.
June offers long daylight, drier weather, and the start of the king run. July is the busiest month and draws crowds for local Kenai Peninsula summer events. August into early September brings the silver salmon run, ripening berries, and the first fall color, but also the wettest stretch of the year.
Late September through April is off-season. Private parks may stay open with limited services, but most state sites close, side roads may not be plowed to trailheads, and refuge canoe routes freeze over. Winter travelers should expect snow-packed roads and short daylight.
How to book campgrounds near Sterling
Reservation systems vary by operator. Alaska State Parks campgrounds in the Kenai River corridor, including Morgans Landing State Recreation Site, Izaak Walton Campground, and Funny River Campground, are first-come, first-served and do not accept online reservations. Arrive early on Friday during July to secure a riverside site, and be prepared to pay the daily fee at the self-registration station.
Private parks such as Moose Crossing RV Park and Alaska Canoe and Campgrounds accept advance reservations directly through their websites or by phone, and full-hookup sites there fill weeks ahead in peak salmon season. Public-use cabins inside the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge are booked separately through Recreation.gov, so check that site for cabin availability and cancellation terms.
What to expect on the ground
Sites near Sterling range from primitive gravel pads with vault toilets to full-hookup RV spots with laundry and showers. State sites typically provide picnic tables, grills, potable water, and toilets, with RV length limits around 32 feet at Izaak Walton and 40 feet at Funny River. Cell service is generally usable along the Sterling Highway corridor and thins out on side roads.
Bears, moose, and eagles are routine in this area, so food storage rules apply at every campground. Mosquitoes are heavy from June through mid-August, especially near the refuge lakes. Fuel, groceries, tackle, and dump stations are available in Sterling and Soldotna, and a 7-day camping limit applies at most state units.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Sterling, AK
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Sterling, AK?
An RV rental in Sterling, AK is often more affordable than you'd expect for an Alaska adventure, especially compared to Kenai Peninsula lodge stays. On RVezy, nightly rates typically run about $150 to $250 for campervans and travel trailers, and $250 to $450 for larger Class C motorhomes during peak summer (June through August). You can find the best deals in the shoulder seasons of mid-May or September, when prices drop noticeably and the Kenai River still runs gorgeous. For a cheap RV rental in Sterling, sort by price, look for hosts offering weekly or longer-stay discounts, and consider a smaller travel trailer if you already have a tow vehicle. Pro tip: book by February for July dates, when the red salmon run peaks.

Great news: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Sterling, Alaska. The State of Alaska does not require a commercial driver's license (CDL) or special endorsement for personal-use motorhomes under 26,000 pounds, which covers virtually every Class B campervan, Class C motorhome, and travel trailer on RVezy. You'll need to be at least 25 years old, hold a valid driver's license, and complete RVezy's quick ID verification right inside the booking flow. Visiting from outside the U.S.? Bring your home license plus an International Driving Permit (IDP) and you're set. Most first-time renters are surprised how simple the process is, which means more time planning your Kenai River fishing trip and less time on paperwork.

Skilak Lake Road has tons of pullouts for stretch breaks. Just keep pups leashed; moose and bears are common neighbors here. Message the host before booking to confirm pet rules and you're ready to roll.
fws.gov/refuge/kenaiCan the RV be delivered to my campground in Sterling?
Yes, RV delivery in Sterling is one of the smartest ways to start an Alaska trip, especially if you're flying into Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport (ANC) and don't want to drive a big rig down the Seward Highway. Many RVezy hosts offer delivery and setup directly to Sterling-area campgrounds like Bing's Landing State Recreation Site, Izaak Walton State Recreation Site, or Moose Crossing Campground, and some will even meet you at an Anchorage hotel. They'll level the RV, hook up power and water, and walk you through every system before handing over the keys. Filter by Delivery on RVezy, then message the host with your campground name and dates to confirm the fee.

Book Alaska State Parks sites through ReserveAmerica and federal sites through Recreation.gov. Pro tip: weekday arrivals are way easier in July.
dnr.alaska.gov/parks/units/kenai/morganslanding.htmWhen is the best time for an RV trip in Sterling?
Sterling's sweet spot is mid-May through mid-September, with July as the absolute peak. Average July highs run around 66°F with lows near 50°F, and you'll have 18+ hours of daylight, perfect for late-evening fishing on the Kenai River. June brings the first king salmon run and the longest days of the year (over 18 hours of daylight). Mid-July to early August is prime sockeye season at the Russian River confluence. September cools to the 50s but gifts you fall colors and northern lights as nights return. Winters dip well below freezing, so most RV rental in Sterling, AK is summer-season only. Pro tip: book your motorhome rental in Sterling by February for July dates.
weather.gov/afc/I've never rented an RV before. Will I be okay driving on the Kenai Peninsula?
You've got this, and Sterling is a great place for first time renting an RV. The Sterling Highway (Alaska Route 1) is a paved, well-maintained two-lane road with wide shoulders and frequent pullouts, far less stressful than city driving. Your RVezy host will do a full walkthrough at pickup, showing you how to level the rig, dump tanks, and operate the generator, and most are happy to text or call mid-trip if you have questions. Stick to a Class B campervan rental in Sterling or a Class C if you want extra confidence, both handle like a large truck. Watch for moose at dawn and dusk, pull over for photos (not on the road), and you'll feel like a pro by day two.
dot.alaska.gov/stwddes/dcstraffic/What if my RV breaks down during my Sterling RV trip?
Help is never far, even in the Alaska wilderness. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, covering flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, and towing, whether you're on the Sterling Highway or down a gravel road near Skilak Lake. One call connects you with dispatch, and there are full-service repair shops in nearby Soldotna (about 15 minutes west) and Kenai (25 minutes) for anything bigger. Your host is also a message away through the RVezy app and usually the fastest source for quirks specific to their rig. Pro tip: screenshot the roadside assistance number before you leave the driveway, since cell coverage can dip near Skilak Lake Loop.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Sterling RV rental across the border or on a long road trip?
Yes, an RV road trip from Sterling can absolutely stretch beyond the Kenai Peninsula, and many hosts are open to it. Driving into Canada (Yukon or British Columbia) is sometimes allowed with host approval and the right insurance documentation, so message the host directly before booking to confirm. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because insurance coverage doesn't extend there. Within Alaska, popular long routes from Sterling include Anchorage to Denali National Park (about 380 miles one way), the full Seward Highway scenic byway, and the Glenn Highway to Valdez. For cross-border or one-way trips, just ask the host upfront so they can confirm mileage, fuel, and drop-off logistics.
cbp.gov/travel/us-citizens/know-before-you-goHow much should I budget for fuel on an RV rental Alaska trip from Sterling?
Fuel is the biggest variable in your Sterling trip budget, and the good news is most of your driving is short hops between fishing spots. Class C motorhomes typically get 8 to 10 miles per gallon (MPG); Class B campervans get 15 to 20 MPG; travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle. Gas in Sterling and nearby Soldotna usually runs about $0.50 to $1.00 per gallon higher than the U.S. average, so check current prices at Three Bears or the Tesoro in Soldotna before a big loop. A week of Kenai Peninsula driving (around 500 miles) often costs $200 to $350 in fuel for a Class C. Pro tip: top off in Soldotna; prices climb the farther south you go toward Homer.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book campgrounds for RV camping in Sterling?
Earlier is better; the Kenai Peninsula fills fast in summer. For RV camping in Sterling, book Alaska State Parks campgrounds like Bing's Landing, Izaak Walton, and Morgan's Landing through reserveamerica.com starting January for the upcoming summer (reservations open 6 months ahead on a rolling basis). U.S. Forest Service and Fish & Wildlife sites such as Russian River Campground, Hidden Lake, and Dolly Varden Lake book through recreation.gov, often 6 months out. Private parks like Moose Crossing and Real Alaskan RV Park take direct reservations and tend to have more last-minute openings. Pro tip: for the July sockeye run, lock in Russian River and Bing's Landing as soon as the booking window opens; weekends sell out in minutes.
recreation.gov/What are the driving conditions like around Sterling?
Driving around Sterling is refreshingly mellow compared to most American highways. The Sterling Highway is paved, two lanes, with frequent pullouts and gentle grades through spruce forest. The main things to watch for: moose (especially dawn and dusk, particularly near the Moose River bridge), occasional gravel patches on side roads like Skilak Lake Loop and Swanson River Road, and slow-moving RVs ahead of you (be patient and use pullouts when you're the slow one). Summer rain can make pavement slick. Winter brings snow and ice from October through April, which is why most RV rentals here are May to September. Pro tip: download offline maps for Skilak Lake Road; cell service drops out, but the scenery is unbeatable.
511.alaska.gov/What amenities will I find at campgrounds near Sterling?
You'll find a great mix of full-hookup and primitive options around Sterling. Private parks like Moose Crossing Campground and Real Alaskan RV Park offer 30/50-amp electric, potable water, sewer hookups, hot showers, laundry, and Wi-Fi. State and federal campgrounds like Bing's Landing, Izaak Walton, Morgan's Landing, and Hidden Lake are typically dry camping with vault toilets, fire rings, picnic tables, and potable water spigots but no hookups, which is why a self-contained RV is perfect here. Dump stations are available at Moose Crossing, Real Alaskan, and the Soldotna Visitor Center. Fill fresh water before heading down Skilak Lake Road. Pro tip: pack quarters; coin-operated showers at some private parks are still a thing in Alaska.
dnr.alaska.gov/parks/units/kenai/What's inside a typical RV rental in Sterling, AK?
You'll be surprised how loaded a typical RV rental in Sterling, AK actually is. Class C motorhomes generally sleep 4 to 7 with a queen over-cab bed, full kitchen (propane stove, oven, microwave, fridge/freezer), wet or dry bathroom with shower and toilet, dinette that converts to a bed, propane furnace, generator for off-grid power, and seatbelted seating for travel. Class B campervans sleep 2 to 4 and pack a kitchenette and wet bath into a nimble van that's easy on Skilak Lake Road. Travel trailers offer the most space for the price. Many Sterling hosts add fishing-friendly extras like rod holders, coolers, bear spray, and waders. Check the listing's amenities list and message the host to confirm anything specific.

Popular add-ons (with typical fees) include bedding and linen packages ($25 to $75), kitchen kits ($25 to $50), camp chairs and outdoor mats, generators (sometimes included, sometimes $5 to $10 per hour over allotment), bikes, kayaks, fishing gear, and propane fill-ups. Most hosts offer pickup at their Sterling property; many also deliver to Bing's Landing, Izaak Walton, or even Anchorage for a per-mile fee. Mileage policies vary, so look for hosts offering 100+ miles per day or unlimited mileage if you're planning a Homer or Seward run. Pro tip: bundle bedding, kitchen, and a generator package in one ask to save on the total.
travelalaska.com/Destinations/Regions/SouthcentralHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment on RVezy is straightforward and fully online; no cash, no awkward handoffs at pickup. You'll pay the rental total (plus taxes and any add-ons) through secure RVezy checkout when you book, and a refundable security deposit is pre-authorized on your card before your trip starts. The deposit is held, not charged, and released after the host confirms the RV came back in the same shape it left (typical holds range from about $500 to $1,500 depending on the rig). To avoid issues with your deposit on a Sterling RV rental: dump tanks before return, refill fuel and propane as the host requests, and snap photos at pickup and drop-off.

A Sterling RV trip puts you within easy reach of Alaska's greatest hits.
