Campgrounds and RV parks near Cameron, AZ

The headline attraction is the East Entrance of Grand Canyon National Park and Desert View Drive, which leads west along the South Rim through a string of viewpoints. Desert View provides one of the widest views of Grand Canyon and the Painted Desert, and Mary Colter's Desert View Watchtower is the landmark stop. An aviation memorial, a trading post and market, and Tusayan Ruin and Museum sit within five miles of the campground. In Cameron itself, the Little Colorado River Gorge Navajo Tribal Park offers overlooks a short drive from town. The Cameron Trading Post is a cultural stop for Navajo art, with hand-crafted silver and turquoise jewelry, woven rugs, pottery, baskets, and paintings from Southwest tribes. Page and Lake Powell, Wupatki and Sunset Crater National Monuments, and downtown Flagstaff are all within a 90-minute drive.

Cameron sits in high desert at the edge of the Colorado Plateau, and the trip-planning calendar revolves around the national-park campground season. Desert View Campground requires advanced reservations during its season, usually mid-April to mid-October, and bookings can be made up to 6 months in advance. Outside that window the in-park campground closes, and travelers rely on the commercial RV parks along US-89, which generally operate year-round. Late spring and early fall are the most comfortable windows for RV travel: warm days, cool nights, and lower wildfire risk than mid-summer. July is typically the warmest month, with afternoon highs near the low 30s in Celsius. The campground is usually full by early afternoon during the busy summer months, so arrivals should be early or reservations locked in well ahead. The North American Monsoon brings afternoon thunderstorms from July into early September. Snow can fall from January through April and October through December, with about 13 snowfall days per year, so winter travel calls for cold-weather prep.

Cameron is a small highway community on the Navajo Nation with limited services. Plan to stock up on groceries, propane, and large beverage packs in Flagstaff before turning north. Flagstaff is the best bet for groceries, meat for grilling, and other camping essentials at major chain stores. The trading post complex has a restaurant, market, gas, and crafts. Inside the park, expect basic facilities. Each Desert View site has a picnic table and a fire ring with a cooking grill; water spigots are available between sites but cannot be used to fill RV tanks. Cell phone connectivity can be intermittent and is not reliable. Generators are allowed only 7 to 9 am and 6 to 8 pm, and there are no RV hook-ups. Wildlife on the rim includes elk, mule deer, coyotes, and California condors, so food storage matters. Dump stations and potable fills are available at commercial parks along US-89.
