Camping near Clifton, Arizona
Clifton sits in Greenlee County along the San Francisco River in southeastern Arizona, at roughly 3,500 feet elevation where high desert meets the southern edge of the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forests. The town is best known as the southern gateway to the Coronado Trail Scenic Byway (U.S. 191), which climbs sharply toward Hannagan Meadow and the White Mountains. RV travelers typically use Clifton as a basecamp for the byway, the Morenci Mine overlook, and the Gila Box Riparian National Conservation Area.
Full-hookup RV options are limited within town, so most travelers reserve private parks in Clifton and nearby Duncan, or drop south to the Safford area for larger resorts. Valley View RV Park and Double T Catwalk Resort sit closest to Clifton itself, while Lexington Pines Resort, LLC, Safford RV Resort, and Alaskan RV Park offer additional pull-through and long-stay sites within an easy drive.
Higher-elevation Forest Service campgrounds sit north of town along U.S. 191 and are usually open only in the warmer months.
Things to do around Clifton
The Coronado Trail Scenic Byway is the headline drive, running north from Clifton through the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forests toward Alpine and Springerville. Expect tight switchbacks, big elevation gains, and cool pine country by the time the road reaches Hannagan Meadow. Trailers and long motorhomes should plan for slow travel and limited pullouts, since the route includes hundreds of curves and steep drop-offs with few guardrails.
Closer to town, the Morenci Mine overlook, Clifton's historic Chase Creek district, and Big Ditch Park give easy stops for families. The Gila Box Riparian National Conservation Area, southwest of Clifton, offers hiking, birding along the Gila River, and primitive camping.
Fishing, wildlife viewing, and cool-water swimming pull most visitors north into the forest toward Luna Lake and the higher lakes near Alpine.

Clifton sits low enough that spring and fall are the most comfortable RV seasons. March through May brings warm days and cool nights with little rain, making it a strong window for the Coronado Trail and desert hikes. Wildflowers appear along the San Francisco River corridor, and higher-elevation Forest Service campgrounds begin opening as snow clears.
Summer is hot in town, with June highs regularly in the low to mid 90s Fahrenheit and dry, breezy conditions before the North American Monsoon arrives. From roughly early July into September, afternoon thunderstorms, flash-flood risk in canyons, and lightning are the main planning concerns. Fire restrictions and temporary forest closures are common in late spring and early summer before monsoon rains take hold.
Winter is mild in Clifton itself but cold at forest elevations. Overnight lows dip near freezing in town, and higher campgrounds along U.S. 191 typically close from late fall until spring due to snow and ice.
How to book campgrounds near Clifton
Private RV parks around Clifton, Duncan, and Safford take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone, and many list on aggregator sites. Full-hookup pull-throughs are limited in Clifton itself, so booking a few weeks ahead is wise for spring and fall stays and for snowbird months at Safford-area resorts.
Forest Service campgrounds in the Apache-Sitgreaves are a mix of reservable and first-come, first-served sites. Reservable sites are booked through Recreation.gov, and standard stay limits run 14 days in a 30-day period. Some higher-elevation sites along the Coronado Trail are seasonal and close in winter.
Before any forest trip, check current fire restrictions and closure orders on the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forests website.
What to expect on the ground
Clifton is a small, working copper-country town, not a resort hub. Grocery runs, fuel, and last-chance supplies are best handled in Safford or Duncan before heading up the Coronado Trail, since services thin quickly north of Morenci. Cell coverage is spotty in canyons and across most of the national forest.
Roads matter here. U.S. 191 north of Clifton is paved but extremely curvy, gaining several thousand feet in elevation with tight turns and few pullouts. Some Forest Service access roads are gravel and narrow, and travel trailers over about 22 feet can struggle at the smaller campgrounds.
Bears and other wildlife are present at forest elevations, so proper food storage is required. Summer travelers should watch for flash flooding in washes and low-water crossings during monsoon storms.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Clifton, AZ
How much does an RV rental in Clifton, AZ typically cost?
Good news: an RV rental in Clifton, AZ is one of the more affordable ways to explore eastern Arizona's high desert and the Coronado Trail. On RVezy, you'll generally find travel trailers starting around $90 to $150 per night, campervans around $125 to $200 per night, and larger Class A and Class C motorhomes ranging from $175 to $325 per night, depending on age and amenities. Because Clifton is a small mountain town rather than a big tourist hub, prices tend to stay lower than Phoenix or Tucson. To find a cheap RV rental in Clifton, book on weekdays, avoid hunting season weekends in fall, and use the price filter to sort lowest-to-highest. Message the host about multi-night discounts, many offer 10 to 15 percent off weekly stays.
visitarizona.com/places/cities/clifton/What license do I need to rent an RV in Clifton, Arizona?
Great news for first-time renters: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Clifton, Arizona. Arizona does not require a special RV license or commercial driver's license (CDL) for any RV class commonly available on RVezy, including Class A motorhomes, Class C motorhomes, campervans, travel trailers, and fifth wheels. You'll just need to be 25 or older with a valid license, and RVezy handles ID verification right inside the booking flow, so no extra paperwork on your end. Visiting from outside the U.S.? Bring your home license plus an International Driving Permit (IDP), usually under $20 from your local auto club. Then it's just pickup, walkthrough, and hit the road toward the Coronado Trail.
azdot.gov/motor-vehicles/driver-services/driver-license-information/driver-license-requirementsWhat protection and roadside coverage is included with my Clifton RV rental?
You're covered from the moment you book. Every RV rental in Clifton, AZ on RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, which brings peace of mind when you're heading into remote stretches of the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest where cell service can be spotty. The protection plan helps cover accidental damage to the RV during your trip, so you can focus on the scenery instead of stressing over a stray gravel chip on the Coronado Trail. During checkout, you choose the protection tier that fits your comfort level: higher tiers typically mean a lower deductible. It's purpose-built for peer-to-peer RV rentals and makes booking a confident yes.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat happens if I need to cancel my Clifton RV trip?
You've got flexibility built in. RVezy, not individual hosts, sets the cancellation policy, so every booking follows the same clear rules, and there's a money-back grace period right after you book to give you time to confirm plans. Cancellation outcomes depend on factors like how far in advance you cancel relative to your trip start date. If a host cancels on you, RVezy refunds your booking or offers travel credits so your trip plans aren't derailed. That means you can lock in a great motorhome rental in Clifton now and adjust if life changes. For full details, check RVezy's cancellation page or reach out to support, the team is available before, during, and after every trip.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Clifton?
Absolutely, plenty of hosts welcome four-legged co-pilots. To find a pet-friendly RV rental in Clifton, just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy and you'll see listings where dogs (and sometimes cats) are explicitly allowed. Clifton is a great basecamp for pet travel: the San Francisco River runs right through town for splash breaks, and the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest just north on U.S. 191 has miles of dog-friendly forest roads and trails. North Clifton RV Park and most Forest Service campgrounds like Owl Creek and Granville also welcome leashed pets. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm any pet fee, breed notes, or shedding rules, most are happy to chat and many are pet owners themselves.
fs.usda.gov/asnfCan the RV be delivered to my campground or location in Clifton?
Yes, and it's the easiest way to start your trip. Many Clifton-area hosts offer RV delivery, meaning they'll drop the rig at a local RV park, a Forest Service site along the Coronado Trail, a relative's driveway, or even a trailhead, then level it, hook up water and power, and walk you through every system before they leave. Just use the Delivery filter on RVezy to see hosts who offer it, and check the listing for per-mile delivery rates (common in rural Arizona since towns are spread out). This is perfect for first-timers and anyone flying into Tucson or Phoenix who'd rather skip towing a trailer up U.S. 191. You arrive, they set up, you camp. Done.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Clifton%2C+ArizonaHow far can I drive on a Clifton, AZ RV trip with typical mileage policies?
You'll have plenty of road to roam. Most Clifton hosts include 100 to 150 free miles per night, and some offer RV rental with unlimited mileage, perfect for tackling the famous Coronado Trail Scenic Byway (U.S. 191). From Clifton, it's about 120 miles north to Hannagan Meadow, 175 miles to Springerville, 165 miles to the Petrified Forest National Park, around 240 miles to the Grand Canyon's south rim, and 200 miles southwest to Tucson. Extra miles, if needed, typically run $0.30 to $0.45 each. Pro tip: filter for unlimited-mileage listings if you're planning a big loop, and ask the host about their mileage package, many offer bundled add-ons that make longer trips much cheaper.
fhwa.dot.gov/byways/byways/2080Where are the best campgrounds near Clifton, AZ to park my rental?
You're spoiled for choice in this corner of Arizona. The most popular full-hookup option in town is North Clifton RV Park on Frisco Avenue, with 55 sites, year-round access, and rigs up to 40 feet welcome. Just up the Coronado Trail in the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest, Granville Campground (about 25 miles north at 6,600 feet) and Lower Juan Miller Campground offer cooler pine-country sites with picnic tables and vault toilets. BLM Owl Creek Campground is a budget-friendly nearby option, and KP Cienega at 8,980 feet is a stunning high-elevation pick from May through September. Pro tip: forest campgrounds tend to be first-come, first-served, so plan to arrive by early afternoon on summer weekends.
fs.usda.gov/recarea/asnf/recarea/?recid=44904When is the best time of year to visit Clifton in an RV?
Clifton sits at about 3,500 feet of elevation, which gives it a genuinely four-season climate, so timing matters. The sweet spot is March through May and again mid-September through November, when daytime highs run a comfortable 65°F to 85°F and nights cool nicely for sleeping with the windows open. Summer (June through August) brings highs of 89°F to 96°F with monsoon thunderstorms rolling in most afternoons, an upside is that you can escape the heat by driving 30 to 60 minutes up the Coronado Trail to 8,000-plus feet where it's 20°F cooler. Winters are mild with highs in the low 50s and crisp 30°F nights, perfect if you want quiet campgrounds and clear stargazing skies.
weather.gov/twc/I've never rented an RV before. What should I expect for my first trip in Clifton?
First time renting an RV? You're going to be fine, promise. Every RVezy host provides a hands-on orientation at pickup (or at delivery if they're bringing the RV to you), walking you through driving tips, the generator, propane, fresh and waste water, slide-outs, awnings, and bed setup, typically 30 to 60 minutes. Clifton is actually a forgiving place to learn: the town itself is small, and U.S. 191 south toward Duncan is wide and straight for easy practice before heading up the curvier Coronado Trail. You can also message your host any question 24/7 through the RVezy app. Pro tip: do a slow loop around the campground before your first highway stretch to get comfortable with the mirrors and turning radius.
azdot.gov/adot-news/safety-tips-driving-rv-or-towing-trailerWhat happens if I break down or have an issue on my Clifton RV trip?
You're never on your own out there. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, covering common issues like a flat tire, dead battery, lockout, or running out of fuel, which is reassuring on remote stretches of U.S. 191 between Clifton and Alpine where towns are 90 miles apart. If something more serious comes up, RVezy's customer support team is available around the clock to coordinate repairs, communicate with your host, or help arrange alternate plans. Pro tip: snap photos of the RV at pickup, save your host's number, and download offline maps before you leave Clifton, since cell coverage drops fast once you climb into the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Clifton RV rental to New Mexico or across state lines?
Yes, interstate travel is welcome on most Clifton rentals, and the location is practically begging for a multi-state road trip. The New Mexico border is just 5 miles east on U.S. 70, putting Glenwood, NM (about 60 miles) and the Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument (about 130 miles) easily within reach. Popular RV road trip routes from Clifton also include the full Coronado Trail north to Springerville, then west to the Petrified Forest and Grand Canyon. One important note: travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because insurance and protection coverage do not extend across that border. Confirm any specific U.S. state plans with your host in a pre-booking message, most are happy to greenlight longer routes.
nps.gov/gicl/index.htmWhat kind of fuel mileage and gas budget should I plan for in Clifton?
Good news: fuel in Clifton is reasonable, generally tracking close to Arizona's statewide average. For budgeting, plan on roughly 7 to 10 miles per gallon (mpg) for a Class A motorhome, 10 to 14 mpg for a Class C, 16 to 20 mpg for a campervan, and your tow vehicle's normal mpg minus 25 to 30 percent for a travel trailer. The closest reliable gas stations are right in Clifton and nearby Morenci, then it's about 90 miles to the next fuel at Alpine if you're heading up the Coronado Trail, so always top off before climbing. Pro tip: GasBuddy is your friend, and filling in Safford (35 miles south) is often cheaper than Morenci on the way out.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Clifton?
Clifton is one of Arizona's more under-the-radar RV destinations, which means less stress on the reservation front. Local in-town RV parks generally take phone and email reservations directly and rarely fill up except during major rodeo or hunting weekends, so 2 to 4 weeks ahead is usually plenty. For Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest sites like Granville, Lower Juan Miller, and KP Cienega, most are first-come, first-served, so aim to arrive by Friday morning on summer holiday weekends. Sites that do take reservations through Recreation.gov can be booked up to 6 months in advance, smart for Memorial Day, July 4th, and Labor Day. Pro tip: midweek arrivals almost always score the best riverside or pine-shaded spots.
recreation.gov/What are driving conditions like around Clifton, AZ in an RV?
Driving an RV around Clifton is mostly a treat, with one fun caveat: the Coronado Trail. U.S. 191 north out of town climbs to over 8,500 feet through more than 460 curves between Clifton and Alpine, with no services for about 90 miles. It's drivable in any RV up to roughly 40 feet, but expect 4 to 5 hours, not 2, and take it slow in second gear on the descents. Heading south toward Duncan and Safford on U.S. 70/191 is wide, flat, and easy. Watch for monsoon thunderstorms July through September (pull over if visibility drops) and occasional elk on dawn and dusk drives. Pro tip: fill fuel and water in Clifton before going north.
az511.gov/What amenities will I find at campgrounds in the Clifton area?
You'll find a nice range, from full hookups in town to scenic boondocking in the forest. North Clifton RV Park offers 30/50-amp electric, water, sewer at each site, plus Wi-Fi and laundry, ideal if you want creature comforts on the San Francisco River. Forest Service campgrounds like Granville, Lower Juan Miller, and Owl Creek are dry camping (no hookups) with vault toilets, picnic tables, and fire rings, so come with fresh water tanks topped up. The closest reliable dump station and potable water fill is at North Clifton RV Park (small fee for non-guests). Pro tip: pick up groceries and ice in Safford before heading up the Coronado Trail, options thin out fast once you leave town.
fs.usda.gov/recarea/asnf/recreation/camping-cabins/recarea/?recid=44900&actid=29What features and amenities come standard in Clifton RV rentals?
More than you'd expect. Most RVs available for rent in Clifton, AZ come fully equipped with a queen or king bed, convertible dinette or bunk space, full kitchen (fridge, freezer, stove, microwave, sink), bathroom with shower and toilet, air conditioning, propane furnace, and seatbelted seating for travel. Campervan rental Clifton options typically include a smaller kitchenette and pop-top sleeping. Many listings add a generator (essential for off-grid Coronado Trail nights), solar, outdoor speakers, a TV, and Wi-Fi hotspots, all visible in the listing's amenities section. Pro tip: filter by Sleeps count and amenities you actually need (like a generator or outdoor shower) so you only see the right rigs for your family RV trip Clifton adventure.
nhtsa.gov/road-safety/recreational-vehicle-safetyWhat add-ons and pickup options should I know about when I rent an RV in Clifton?
Hosts make it easy to customize your trip. Popular add-ons for Clifton motorhome rentals include linen and kitchen kits ($30 to $75), camping chairs and outdoor rugs ($15 to $40), generators or extra propane, bike racks, and pet packages. For pickup, you can meet the host at their location, or use the Delivery filter to have the RV brought to North Clifton RV Park, a Forest Service site, or your driveway, with per-mile fees on longer drops. Instant Book listings let you confirm without waiting for host approval, helpful if you're planning last-minute. Pro tip: bundle the linen and camp-kit add-ons rather than packing your own, you'll fit way more snacks in the car for the drive in.
visitarizona.com/places/cities/clifton/How does payment and the security deposit work for an RV rental in Clifton?
Payment is straightforward and 100 percent online, no cash or paper checks needed. When you book an RV rental in Clifton, AZ on RVezy, your card is charged securely through the platform at the time of booking. A refundable security deposit is handled separately from the booking payment, typically placed as a hold on your card around the start of the trip and released after return, assuming no damage outside the protection plan. To avoid any hiccups, do a thorough walkaround video at pickup and dropoff, return the RV with the agreed fuel and tank levels, and message your host through the RVezy app for any changes so everything is in writing.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I rent an RV in Clifton in winter, and is cold-weather camping doable?
Yes, winter RV rentals in Clifton are absolutely on the table, and honestly underrated. Clifton's elevation of about 3,500 feet keeps winter daytime highs in the low 50s with crisp 30s at night, so it's much milder than Flagstaff or the White Mountains. Many hosts offer year-round availability, and you'll often score lower nightly rates from December through February. For comfort, filter listings for heated holding tanks, propane furnaces, and shore-power-ready setups, then plan to stay at North Clifton RV Park where full hookups make freezing nights a non-issue. If you want snow, just drive an hour up the Coronado Trail toward Hannagan Meadow at 9,100 feet. Pro tip: bring a small space heater for shore-power nights, it saves propane.
