Campgrounds and RV parks near Kykotsmovi Village, AZ

The primary draw is Hopi cultural heritage. Third Mesa includes the villages of Kykotsmovi, Old Oraibi, Bacavi, and Hotevilla, and is known for wicker basketry, weaving, kachina doll carving, and silversmithing. Visitors are welcome at most public ceremonies to observe dances, and hiring a certified Hopi guide is the recommended way to see the villages. South of the reservation, Homolovi State Park contains over 300 Ancestral Puebloan archaeological sites just north of Winslow, with interpretive programs, birdwatching, and hiking. Meteor Crater lies about an hour southwest and offers guided rim tours. To the north, Navajo National Monument preserves cliff dwellings. Rangers guide visitors on free tours of the Keet Seel and Betatakin cliff dwellings, while the Inscription House site is currently closed to public access.

The region has a high-desert climate. In the Winslow area, summers are hot, winters are short and very cold, and it is dry and mostly clear year round, with temperatures typically ranging from about 22 to 93 degrees Fahrenheit. Kykotsmovi sits at higher elevation than Winslow, so nights run cooler and winter snow is more likely. Spring and fall are the most comfortable travel windows for RV renters. Summer brings the North American monsoon, with brief but intense afternoon thunderstorms in July and August that can flood dirt roads on the reservation. Winter can deliver snow, ice, and short daylight hours, so travelers should be prepared for freezing overnight temperatures. Campground seasonality varies. Homolovi State Park is open year-round. Sunset View at Navajo National Monument is open year-round with sites on a first-come, first-served basis. Canyon View Campground is closed during winter months and is intended for tent camping. Potable water at Sunset View is available for cooking and filling small containers, but is unavailable in winter.

Cell service is limited across the Hopi and Navajo reservations. There is no WiFi or cell service at or near Navajo National Monument, so download directions before arriving. Fuel, groceries, and laundry are sparse between towns, so top off at every opportunity. Rig size matters. Sunset View accommodates RVs and trailers up to 28 feet, and there are no hookups at any campsites, though there is potable water at the campground. Homolovi has a maximum RV length of 83 feet, with both back-in and pull-through sites, and pull-through sites offer both 30 and 50 amp hookups. Respect local rules. The Hopi villages ask that visitors do not photograph, video, explore non-designated areas, pick up loose feathers, or bring alcohol, drugs, or firearms. Alcohol is also prohibited on Navajo Nation land. Open fires are strictly prohibited throughout the park at Sunset View.
