Campgrounds and RV parks near Shongopovi, AZ

The Hopi Cultural Center on Second Mesa is the practical starting point for visitors, with a museum, restaurant serving Hopi cuisine, and lodging. Some ceremonies take place in the villages, although many are closed to the non-Hopi public. Guided tours of individual villages can sometimes be arranged through the villages directly. Day-trip options within a two-hour drive include Homolovi Ruins State Park, which preserves over 300 Ancestral Puebloan archaeological sites near Winslow, with interpretive trails at the Homolovi sites. Meteor Crater sits a short drive south off I-40, and Navajo National Monument to the north preserves Ancestral Puebloan cliff dwellings reached by short rim trails from the visitor center. Shopping for Hopi pottery, katsina carvings, jewelry, and basketry directly from village artisans is a defining part of any visit.

The high desert around Shongopovi sees a large seasonal swing. Summers are hot, with a noticeable increase in rainfall during late summer, while winters are cold and bring occasional snowfall. Late spring and early fall are the most comfortable windows for RV travel, with mild days and cool nights at elevations near 5,700 feet. Summer brings the North American Monsoon, with afternoon thunderstorms most common in July and August. Dirt access roads on the reservation can become slick or impassable during heavy rain, so RVers should stick to paved routes and check conditions locally. Winter can deliver snow and hard freezes, and some water systems at primitive campgrounds, including those at Sunset View, are shut off in the coldest weeks. Ceremonial calendars also shape the visitor experience. The masked kachina dances for which the Hopi are most famous are held roughly from January to July, and most are closed to the non-Hopi public. Villages may close to outsiders on short notice, so travelers should confirm access with the Hopi Cultural Preservation Office or the village before planning a visit around a specific date.

Expect wide spacing between services. Cell coverage is patchy across the Hopi and Navajo reservations, and there is no WiFi or cell service at or near Navajo National Monument, so downloading directions before arrival is advisable. Fuel up in Winslow, Tuba City, or at reservation gas stations before venturing between campgrounds. RV size limits matter. Roads and pads at Sunset View - Navajo National Monument are paved, with a 28-foot vehicle-length limit, while Homolovi Ruins State Park handles much larger rigs and has some pull-throughs with 30 and 50 amp service. Meteor Crater RV Park offers full hookups and level pull-throughs suitable for big rigs. Visitor etiquette on the Hopi Reservation is strict. Alcohol is prohibited on the reservation and cannot be transported onto it. Photography, video, audio recording, and sketching are not permitted in the villages without prior consent from the Hopi Cultural Preservation Office.
