Campgrounds and RV parks near Manila, AR

Big Lake National Wildlife Refuge is the main draw. The lake averages about three feet deep and is bordered by virgin cypress-tupelo swamp, with a visitor center on Highway 18 in Manila that houses interpretive exhibits, a small museum, and a scenic overlook. Peak waterfowl numbers in January and February can exceed 200,000 birds, and more than 225 bird species have been documented on the refuge. Paddlers launch canoes and kayaks to enter the wilderness area, since boat access is required. Anglers target largemouth bass, catfish, crappie, and bluegill on the shallow natural lake. At Crowley's Ridge State Park, families use the swimming beach on spring-fed Lake Ponder, rent kayaks or pedal boats, fish 31-acre Walcott Lake, and hike the 1.25-mile Dancing Rabbit Trail across a swinging bridge. Fort Pillow adds Civil War history and Mississippi River bluff views.

Northeast Arkansas has a humid subtropical climate with strong seasonal contrasts. Spring is the wettest stretch, with May typically the heaviest rain month and severe thunderstorms and tornado risk peaking from March through May. Trails and low-lying refuge roads can flood: during high water, up to 99 percent of Big Lake NWR may be submerged. Summer is hot and muggy, with July averaging roughly 88°F. This is the season when Crowley's Ridge State Park's swimming beach is staffed, with lifeguards on duty from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend, Wednesday through Sunday. Afternoon thunderstorms are common. Fall brings the most comfortable weather, drier stretches, and lower humidity, making September and October strong RV months. Winter is short and cool, with occasional cold snaps and light snow, but it is prime time for waterfowl viewing. Regulated hunting seasons run on Big Lake WMA from early September through late February, so campers should expect hunter traffic and check WMA rules before paddling.

Manila-area private parks are small, practical, and geared to travelers passing through on Highway 18 or working in the region. Expect basic full-hookup pull-through or back-in sites rather than resort amenities. Grocery and fuel stops are in Manila and Blytheville, and paddlers often pick up fishing or hunting licenses before heading to the refuge. Crowley's Ridge sites include paved pads, tables, fire rings, water and electric hookups, flush toilets, hot showers, and a dump station, with 18 Class B RV sites and 8 tent sites next to Lake Ponder. Some pads are tight, so confirm site length before arriving with a larger rig. Fort Pillow's Family Campground has 30 sites total, including 15 with 20/30/50-amp electric and water, six 20-amp sites, and nine primitive sites, plus a hike-in backcountry site on the Blue Chickasaw Bluff Trail. The campground is trashcan-free with a central dump station and dumpster at the entrance.
