Campgrounds and RV parks near Swifton, AR

Fishing drives most trip planning. Jacksonport State Park sits at the confluence of the White and Black rivers and offers a boat ramp, swimming beach, and the half-mile Tunstall Riverwalk. Lake Charles State Park centers on a 645-acre lake stocked with bass, crappie, bream, and catfish, with kayak rentals and guided paddle programs offered in season. History is the other draw. Davidsonville Historic State Park preserves the site of Arkansas Territory's first post office, first courthouse, and first land office, with a visitor center, interpretive trails, and boat rentals for use on Trappers Lake and the Black River. The restored 1872 courthouse museum at Jacksonport State Park is free to enter. Birding is strong along the Mississippi Flyway in spring and fall, and the area's bottomland hardwoods support herons, woodpeckers, and migrating songbirds.

Peak camping season in northeast Arkansas runs March through November, which aligns with the state parks' full-service calendar. Visitor centers at Lake Charles, Jacksonport, and Davidsonville run daily peak hours March through November and reduced hours December through February. Restrooms at Jacksonport are open March through November, while Davidsonville keeps restrooms open year-round. Water service at Lake Charles is turned off from December through February. Spring brings wildflowers, active fishing, and the highest severe-weather risk. Northeast Arkansas sits in a corridor prone to thunderstorms and occasional tornadoes from March into May, so RV travelers should monitor NWS Little Rock alerts. Summer is hot and humid, with heat indices frequently climbing above 100 degrees and afternoon storms common. Fall is the most comfortable window: cooler nights, lower humidity, and strong color along the Black River. Winter camping is possible at all three nearby state parks, which keep campgrounds open year-round, though services and interpretive programs are reduced.

Access roads in this part of Arkansas are rural and narrow. Approaches to Lake Charles State Park in particular involve winding two-lane county roads; larger rigs should plan the route in advance and travel in daylight. Davidsonville Historic State Park sits off Highway 166 south of Pocahontas, and Jacksonport is reached via State Highway 69 about three miles north of Newport. Cell service is inconsistent. Jacksonport generally has usable signal, while Lake Charles and Davidsonville are spottier. Do not count on streaming or reliable data at any of the state park campgrounds. Sites at all three state parks are paved and generally level, with picnic tables, fire rings, and grills. Bring insect repellent; mosquitoes and biting flies are active from late spring through early fall.
