Campgrounds and RV parks near Bayview, CA

Most trips here center on the redwoods. Humboldt Redwoods State Park, about an hour south, contains a large expanse of old-growth coast redwood forest, with the 32-mile Avenue of the Giants as its main scenic drive. To the north, Redwood National and State Parks protect more old growth, Roosevelt elk meadows, and a long stretch of Pacific coastline. Sue-meg State Park, north of Eureka, packs tidepools, agate hunting, and whale-watching headlands into a compact loop. Closer to Bayview, travelers can explore Old Town Eureka, the Humboldt Bay National Wildlife Refuge, Fort Humboldt, and the Arcata Marsh. Fishing, kayaking on Humboldt Bay, and beach days at Clam Beach and Samoa round out a typical itinerary.

The coast around Bayview has a cool, marine climate with a strong wet-and-dry seasonal split. Summers are dry and unusually cool for California, with frequent morning fog rolling in off the Pacific and afternoons that often stay in the low 60s Fahrenheit. This is peak season for the redwood parks: campgrounds at Humboldt Redwoods and within Redwood National and State Parks fill quickly, and seasonal sites such as Hidden Springs Campground typically operate from late spring through early fall. Fall brings clearer skies, warmer inland afternoons, and lighter crowds before the rains return. Winters are mild but very wet, with the bulk of the annual rainfall concentrated from November through March and occasional storms that can flood low-lying river campgrounds. Several state-park campgrounds along the Eel and Van Duzen rivers reduce operations or close in winter, while Burlington Campground at Humboldt Redwoods stays open year-round. Spring is variable: wildflowers and elk calves arrive, but rain is still common into May.

Expect cool, damp air even in midsummer. Morning fog is common along the bay, and overnight lows often dip into the 40s Fahrenheit much of the year, so RVers should bring layers and verify heater function before arrival. Cell coverage is reliable in Eureka, Arcata, and Fortuna but drops out quickly on the Lost Coast and inside deep redwood groves. Roads on Highway 101 are easy for large rigs, while Avenue of the Giants is paved but narrow under the canopy. Black bears are present in the redwood parks, and food storage rules are enforced at state-park sites. River-adjacent campgrounds can have soft ground after storms, and some state-park loops have low-clearance tree limbs that limit very tall Class A motorhomes. Generator hours and quiet hours are common at both private and public parks.
