Campgrounds and RV parks near Blue Lake, CA

The Mad River runs through town and is used for kayaking, fishing for steelhead and salmon in season, and shoreline walks. Blue Lake is home to the Blue Lake Casino and the Dell'Arte International theater school, which hosts a summer Mad River Festival. Within a short drive, RVers reach Arcata for the Arcata Marsh and Wildlife Sanctuary and the Cal Poly Humboldt campus, plus Eureka's Old Town and Humboldt Bay. To the north, Sue-Meg State Park, Big Lagoon, and Clam Beach offer ocean access and tidepools. Redwood National and State Parks stretch along the north coast with multiple visitor centers, including Prairie Creek where Roosevelt elk are commonly seen. Eastbound, Highway 299 climbs to Willow Creek and the Trinity River for fishing and rafting.

The Humboldt coast has a cool, wet winter and a dry, mild summer. Summers are comfortable, dry, and mostly clear, while winters are long, cold, wet, and mostly cloudy, so trip planning hinges more on rainfall than on heat. Coastal fog is common on early summer mornings and tends to burn off by afternoon a few miles inland near Blue Lake. Late spring through early fall is the prime RV window. The best stretch to camp around Blue Lake is summer through early fall, roughly June through September, when conditions are most reliable. July and August see the heaviest visitation at redwood parks, and inland campgrounds along the Trinity River fill quickly on weekends. Winter brings heavy rain and occasional river flooding along the Mad and Eel drainages, with some state park loops and dispersed sites closed or reduced. Spring camping in March through May can be enjoyable but expect cooler temperatures and possible rain. Snow at low elevations is rare, but mountain passes east of the area can require chains during winter storms.

Roads into Blue Lake from US-101 are paved and easy to navigate in larger rigs, though older town streets and some forest access roads are narrow. Full hookups, dump stations, and laundry are available at most private parks, while state and national park campgrounds generally offer water and restrooms but no electric or sewer at the site. Cell coverage is reliable in town and along US-101 but limited in many backcountry areas. Bears are present in the redwood parks, so food storage rules are enforced. Coastal sites can be windy and damp, while inland sites near the Trinity River run warmer and drier in summer. Mosquitoes are mild compared with inland California, but ticks are common on trails. Firewood restrictions apply: buy local to limit pest spread.
