Campgrounds and RV parks near Bodfish, CA

The Kern River draws rafters, kayakers, and trout anglers, with the Upper Kern above Kernville known for whitewater and the Lower Kern below the dam offering calmer floats and wading. Lake Isabella supports fishing for trout, bass, crappie, bluegill, and catfish, plus boating, swimming, and water skiing. Strong afternoon winds make the lake one of California's better windsurfing spots. On land, the Trail of 100 Giants in Giant Sequoia National Monument is a short, accessible loop through old-growth sequoias about an hour north. Silver City Ghost Town in Bodfish itself collects relocated frontier buildings and mining artifacts for self-guided tours. The South Fork Wildlife Area east of the lake is one of the largest riparian woodlands left in California and is good for birding and paddling.

Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows for RV travel in the Kern River Valley. From March through May, daytime highs climb from the 50s into the 60s and 70s Fahrenheit, wildflowers bloom on the foothills, and the Upper Kern runs high with snowmelt, which is prime whitewater season but also the most dangerous time to enter the river on foot. Summers are hot and dry, with afternoon highs frequently topping 90 and sometimes pushing past 100 Fahrenheit at lake elevation. Shade is limited at many of the lakeside campgrounds, so sites with hookups and air conditioning are worth prioritizing in July and August. Fire restrictions are common from late spring into fall, and campfire permits are required for stoves and fire rings on Forest Service land. Fall brings mild days, cool nights, and the lowest crowds. Winter is mild compared with the high Sierra: daytime highs typically reach the low 50s, nights drop near freezing, and snow is occasional rather than persistent. Most lake campgrounds stay open year round.

Most lakeside campgrounds sit between 2,500 and 2,600 feet in open, high-desert terrain. Cottonwoods and scattered oaks provide patchy shade, and many sites are exposed, so awnings and sunshades help in summer. Afternoon winds pick up regularly from spring through early summer, which is welcome on hot days but worth planning for when leveling and setting up. Private parks near Bodfish and Lake Isabella offer full hookups, showers, and laundry. Forest Service campgrounds typically have flush or vault toilets, drinking water, and dump stations at select locations, but few offer electric hookups. Cell coverage is reliable in town and along Highway 178 and weakens in the canyons upriver. Every boat, personal watercraft, and sailboard on Lake Isabella must display a Kern County permit. Bring a campfire permit if cooking on a stove or grill outside developed sites.
