Campgrounds and RV parks near Charter Oak, CA

Puddingstone Lake anchors most outdoor plans on this side of the valley. Lakeside walking, fishing, and hiking are the main draws, with about nine miles of trails ringing the water, plus boating at Frank G. Bonelli Regional Park. Families often pair a camp night with Raging Waters, the adjacent water park, or with events at the Pomona Fairplex. Mountain biking is a growing draw: Bonelli Regional Park is slated to host world-class mountain biking events for the 2028 Olympics. Up the East Fork of the San Gabriel River, the canyon adds river wading, fishing, and hiking. To the south, Chino Hills State Park covers about 14,100 acres with over 90 miles of hiking, biking, and equestrian trails, best in spring wildflower season.

Charter Oak has a Mediterranean climate, so the calendar splits cleanly into a wet, mild winter and a long dry season. Spring is the standout window for camping. Wildflowers fill the valleys of Chino Hills State Park from March through May, with poppies, lupine, and mustard at peak, and this is the busiest time to visit. Summer brings hot, dry inland days, frequent triple-digit afternoons in July and August, and warm nights that are comfortable for tent sleeping near the river but tough at lower-elevation RV parks without shade. Late summer and fall are wildfire season in the San Gabriel foothills, and campfire rules tighten accordingly: campfires and charcoal BBQs are not permitted at Rolling M Ranch Campground in Chino Hills State Park, though gas stoves may be used. Winter is the rainy season, with most of the year's precipitation falling between December and March. The park closes for at least 48 hours after rain of more than a quarter inch because of slick clay roads. Reservations are easiest midweek in winter, and hardest on spring and fall weekends.

Expect suburban-edge camping rather than backcountry. Bonelli Bluffs is a true resort, with paved full-hookup pads, two pools, outdoor grills, and beachfront access to Puddingstone Lake, plus 30- and 50-amp service at most sites. Fairplex sites sit close together with asphalt pads and easy big-rig access. Camp Williams Resort is the most rustic of the private options, with river-adjacent tent sites and shaded RV pads up the East Fork canyon. Chino Hills State Park is primitive by design: each site at Rolling M Ranch has paved parking that can accommodate two cars or RVs up to 30 feet, with flush toilets, hot showers, and potable water, but no hookups or dump station. Cell coverage is generally good in the valley and weak to nonexistent at Rolling M Ranch.
