Campgrounds and RV parks near Covina, CA

Outdoor recreation centers on Puddingstone Lake and the surrounding regional park. Frank G. Bonelli Regional Park supports mountain biking, picnicking, hiking, horseback riding, jogging, nature walks, a water-theme park, bird watching, and golf, and guests at Bonelli Bluffs have access to lakeside walking trails, fishing, and hiking. Up the canyon, the East Fork of the San Gabriel River draws families for wading, fishing, and gold panning, and Camp Williams Resort sits along the river in the Angeles National Forest area. To the south, Chino Hills State Park offers trails across roughly 14,000 acres of rolling grasslands and walnut woodlands for hiking, mountain biking, bird-watching, and horseback riding. Theme parks, Cal Poly Pomona, and the Claremont Colleges are all short drives away.

The Covina area is usable year-round, but each season has trade-offs. Spring is peak time in the foothills: wildflowers blanket the valleys of Chino Hills State Park, generally from March through May, and this is the busiest time to visit. Reserve early in this window, since online reservations open six months in advance on a rolling daily basis and book up fast, especially for weekends and holidays in peak season from March to September. Summer brings hot, dry inland weather and elevated fire risk. Campfires and charcoal BBQs are not permitted at Chino Hills State Park, and similar restrictions often apply across the Angeles National Forest during fire season. Cooler river canyons such as the East Fork stay more comfortable than the valley floor. Fall offers warm days, lighter crowds, and event traffic around the LA County Fairgrounds. Winter is the wet season, with mild daytime temperatures and occasional Pacific storms; Bonelli Bluffs and Fairplex RV Park operate year-round, while primitive sites can be muddy after heavy rain, and Chino Hills can close for at least 48 hours after rainfall over a quarter inch.

Expect a mix of resort-style and primitive experiences within a short drive. Bonelli Bluffs has 504 large paved full hookup sites including 15 pull-through spaces and resort amenities; on-site features include a beach-front park, two pools, outdoor fire pits, and activities. Fairplex RV Park provides 30 and 50 amp full hookups, furnished cabins, a mini-market, laundry, showers, and a heated pool, with tighter sites suited to event stays. Chino Hills State Park is much more basic. Rolling M Ranch Campground has 20 developed sites with restroom and shower facilities, paved parking that can accommodate two cars or RVs up to 30 feet in length, no hookups or dump station, picnic tables and lantern posts at each site, and open fires are not allowed though gas stoves are permitted. Plan for self-contained RV use and pack out everything.
