Campgrounds and RV parks near Cutten, CA

The headline attraction is the redwoods. Humboldt Redwoods State Park covers roughly 53,000 acres along the Eel River corridor, and the adjacent Avenue of the Giants is a 32-mile scenic route lined with old-growth groves and walking trails. North of Cutten, Redwood National and State Parks add Prairie Creek, Jedediah Smith, and Del Norte Coast Redwoods, with elk viewing and beach access. Fern Canyon, used as a filming location for Jurassic Park, is reachable from coast-side roads, along with tide pools and kayak launches. Old Town Eureka offers Victorian architecture, restaurants, and the working waterfront on Humboldt Bay. Families can plan a day at Sequoia Park Zoo in Eureka, beachcombing at Clam Beach or Moonstone Beach, and short hikes at Sue-meg State Park near Trinidad. Anglers target salmon and steelhead on the Eel, Mad, and Smith rivers in season.

The Eureka area has an unusually narrow temperature range for California. Summers are cool, dry, and mostly clear, while winters are long, wet, windy, and cloudy, with temperatures typically running between the low 40s and mid 60s Fahrenheit across the year. Summer is the prime RV season: roads are dry, redwood trails are open, and coastal fog usually burns off by midday. It is also the busiest stretch, and inland state-park sites book out well in advance. Spring brings wildflowers, lighter crowds, and steelhead runs, with showers still likely. Fall is a sweet spot through September and early October, when ocean temperatures peak and traffic on the Avenue of the Giants thins out. Winter is the wettest season by a wide margin and brings the risk of road closures from flooding and slides along Highway 101 and the Eel River corridor. Within Redwood National and State Parks, Jedediah Smith and Elk Prairie operate year-round, Mill Creek runs mid-May through early October, and Gold Bluffs Beach stays open but may close temporarily after storms.

Plan for damp, cool air even in July. Fog rolls in off the Pacific most summer mornings and evenings, so pack layers, rain jackets, and warm sleep gear regardless of the forecast. Cell service is reliable in Cutten, Eureka, and Arcata but drops out quickly inside redwood canyons and along the Lost Coast. There are no RV hookups or dump stations inside Humboldt Redwoods State Park, so tanks need to be emptied at private RV parks or in town. Highway 101 is the main artery and is generally RV-friendly, but some side roads into coastal groves are narrow, winding, or unpaved. Wildlife includes Roosevelt elk near Prairie Creek, black bears in the backcountry, and raccoons in every campground, so food-storage discipline matters and bear boxes should be used where provided.
