Camping near Fall River Mills, California
Fall River Mills sits in the Fall River Valley of northeastern Shasta County, at the edge of the southern Cascades between Mount Shasta and Lassen Peak. The area is volcanic country, drained by the spring-fed Fall River and the Pit River, and it serves as a practical base for RV travelers heading to Burney Falls, Hat Creek, and Lassen Volcanic National Park. The large volume of spring water keeps Fall River water temperatures near optimum ranges for trout production, even during mid-summer, which makes the region a year-round draw for anglers.
Campgrounds within roughly a half-hour drive cover a range of styles. Cassel Campground offers 27 sites for RVs, trailers, and tents under pine shade and is operated by PG&E. Lassen RV Resort and Hat Creek Hereford Ranch RV Park and Campground sit along the Hat Creek corridor to the south, while Burney Falls Resort RV Park and McArthur-Burney Falls State Park anchor the area around Lake Britton to the northwest.
Things to do near Fall River Mills
The headline attraction is Burney Falls. The 129-foot waterfall can be viewed from a parking-area overlook or from a 1.3-mile loop trail that circles the falls. Lake Britton, inside the same state park, adds canoeing, kayaking, swimming, hiking, horseback riding, windsurfing, and wildlife viewing.
Fly fishing is the other major draw. The Hat Creek Valley east of Burney is popular for fly fishing in Hat Creek and nearby Crystal Lake and Baum Lake, and the Fall River itself is a designated wild trout stream. To the south, Lassen Volcanic National Park offers volcanic peaks, hydrothermal areas, and alpine lakes along Highway 89, with the Pacific Crest Trail also running through Burney Falls park.

Summer is the prime camping window. Days are hot and dry, nights stay cool because of the elevation around 3,000 feet, and most regional campgrounds are fully open. It is also the busiest stretch, with reservations at McArthur-Burney Falls filling well in advance. The state park books up quickly during summer months, so it is advisable to reserve up to six months ahead for the best availability.
Spring and fall bring lighter crowds, cooler nights, and active fishing on Hat Creek and the Fall River. Late-season travelers should watch for wildfire activity and smoke in the Cascades, which can trigger campfire bans and occasional park closures in Lassen Volcanic and surrounding national forest land. Winter is cold and snowy at this elevation. The Lassen Volcanic National Park Highway closes to through traffic for the winter and spring snow season, though the park itself remains open. Cassel Campground stays open year-round, but many other sites operate seasonally.
How to book campgrounds near Fall River Mills
Reservation systems vary by operator. McArthur-Burney Falls Memorial State Park is booked through ReserveCalifornia, with a six-month booking window. Cassel Campground is booked through PG&E's recreation portal and has a 2-night minimum stay; many PG&E campgrounds, including those with reservations, also hold some first-come, first-served sites.
Private parks such as Lassen RV Resort, Burney Falls Resort RV Park, and Hat Creek Hereford Ranch RV Park and Campground are booked directly with the operator. Day-use access to Burney Falls has its own system: reservations are required on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays from mid-May through late September, made in advance through LAZ Parking on the official Burney Falls park webpage. Guests with a campground or cabin reservation do not need a separate day-use reservation.
What to expect on the ground
Expect a high-desert and pine-forest mix at roughly 3,000 to 4,000 feet of elevation. Nights are cold even in summer, mornings can be foggy along the rivers, and afternoons are typically dry. RV travelers heading to McArthur-Burney Falls State Park should note a strict size limit: the park cannot admit vehicles over 32 feet for day-use or camping, and oversized vehicles must park in the Lake Britton lot on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays.
Cellular coverage is patchy off the main highways. Wildlife includes deer, woodpeckers, and the occasional black bear, so food storage matters. Sites at the state park have a paved spur, table, food storage locker, and fire ring with grill, and most regional campgrounds provide vault or flush toilets and potable water.

help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat protection is included with my Fall River Mills RV rental?
You're covered. Every RVezy booking includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can hit Highway 299 toward Burney Falls or Lassen with real peace of mind. The protection plan helps cover physical damage to the RV during your trip, and you select the coverage level that fits your comfort at checkout. It isn't traditional auto insurance, but it's designed to limit the surprise out-of-pocket costs renters worry about most. If you're planning rougher forest roads near Hat Creek or McArthur, choosing a higher coverage tier for a few extra dollars per night is an easy way to drive easy.

Booking an RV rental in Fall River Mills is low risk. RVezy sets the cancellation policy (not individual hosts), and every booking includes a grace-period window where you can cancel for a full refund shortly after booking. After that, refund eligibility depends on how far out your trip start date is. If a host cancels on you, RVezy helps with a refund or rebooking credit. Weather can shift fast in the Fall River Valley, so RVezy support is available 7 days a week to help if wildfire smoke, road closures on Highway 89, or storms disrupt your plans. Book early to lock in your dates with confidence.

Many hosts welcome dogs for a small cleaning fee, often $25 to $75. On the road, leashed dogs are welcome at McArthur-Burney Falls Memorial State Park campgrounds and along Hat Creek for fishing strolls. Inside Lassen Volcanic National Park, pets are allowed in developed campgrounds, parking areas, and on paved roads, but not on park trails, so plan day hikes in the surrounding Lassen National Forest where leashed pups are welcome. Pack booties: volcanic soil can be fine and dusty on paws.
nps.gov/lavo/planyourvisit/pets.htmCan the RV be delivered to my campsite in Fall River Mills?
Yes, RV delivery in Fall River Mills is a popular option and a lifesaver for first-time renters. Many local hosts will drive the motorhome or trailer directly to McArthur-Burney Falls Memorial State Park, private RV parks in McArthur or Hat Creek, or even a private cabin or driveway, then level it, hook up power and water, and walk you through every system. Delivery fees typically run a few dollars per mile from the host's home base, or a flat rate within a set radius. Use the Delivery filter when searching to see hosts offering this service. Flying into Redding Municipal Airport (RDD), about 70 miles west? Ask your host about a campground drop-off so you can skip driving a big rig on Highway 299.

Burney Falls books up about six months out for summer weekends, so reserve through ReserveCalifornia.com the moment your dates open.
parks.ca.gov/?page_id=455When is the best time of year for a Fall River Mills RV trip?
Late May through early October is the sweet spot for RV camping in Fall River Mills, with summer highs typically in the 80s and crisp nights in the 50s, ideal for campfires. Spring (April to May) brings wildflowers and rushing waterfalls but cool nights in the 30s, and the Lassen Park Highway often stays closed by snow until late June or July. September is a local favorite: warm days, lighter crowds at Burney Falls, and excellent dry-fly fishing on Hat Creek and the Fall River. Winters are genuinely cold (lows in the 20s, snow on the ground), and many seasonal campgrounds close. Book July or August trips at least four months ahead because the Fall River Valley fills up fast.
weather.gov/sto/I've never driven an RV before, will I be okay in Fall River Mills?
You'll do great. This is one of the friendliest regions in California for first time renting an RV. Highway 299 and Highway 89 are wide two-lane roads with gentle curves and light traffic compared to the Bay Area or LA. Every RVezy host provides a hands-on walkthrough at pickup covering driving, leveling, propane, the generator, and dumping tanks, and they're a text away during your trip. For your first rental, choose a Class C motorhome or a smaller travel trailer (under 25 feet), they drive almost like a large van and fit easily at most local campsites. Take 10 minutes in an empty parking lot in McArthur to practice turns and backing before heading to your campground.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/categories/360003360453-RentersWhat happens if something goes wrong on the road?
Help is never far away. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, so a flat tire on Highway 299, a dead battery at McArthur-Burney Falls, or a tow off a forest road is one phone call away. The RVezy support team is reachable 7 days a week before, during, and after your trip, and your host is available by message for quick questions like resetting the inverter. Cell coverage in the Fall River Valley is solid in town and along Highway 299 but spotty inside Lassen Volcanic National Park, so download offline maps before you go. Snap a photo of the RV's roadside assistance info card at pickup so it's always handy.

Travel into Mexico isn't permitted on RVezy rentals, but crossing into Oregon is generally fine, just confirm with your host before booking. The Highway 89 stretch between Burney Falls and Lassen is one of the prettiest two-hour drives in the state.
fs.usda.gov/recarea/lassen/recarea/?recid=11787How much fuel will I use, and where do I gas up near Fall River Mills?
Budgeting is easy once you know the numbers. Class C motorhomes average 8 to 12 miles per gallon (MPG), Class B campervans get 16 to 20 MPG, and travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle, expect 10 to 14 MPG combined. California gas prices typically run higher than the national average, often in the $4.50 to $5.50 per gallon range. You'll find reliable fuel stops in Fall River Mills and McArthur along Highway 299, plus larger stations in Burney (about 15 miles west). For a typical 4-night, 400-mile loop through Lassen and Burney Falls, plan on roughly $150 to $250 in fuel for a Class C. Fill up in Burney or Redding before heading deeper into Lassen National Forest, prices climb fast at the small Hat Creek stations and Old Station.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Fall River Mills?
For a stress-free trip, book your campsite the same day you book your RV. McArthur-Burney Falls Memorial State Park opens reservations six months ahead on ReserveCalifornia.com, and summer weekends sell out within minutes of the booking window opening at 8 a.m. Pacific. Lassen Volcanic National Park campgrounds (Manzanita Lake, Summit Lake) book through Recreation.gov, also six months out. Private parks in McArthur and Hat Creek usually have more flexibility but still fill in July and August. Off-season (October to April) you can often roll in same-day. Set a calendar reminder for 5:45 a.m. on your six-month booking date because the most popular Burney Falls sites disappear quickly.
reservecalifornia.com/What are the local driving conditions like around Fall River Mills?
Driving here is refreshingly easy. Highway 299 is the main east-west route through Fall River Mills: paved, wide, and lightly trafficked outside of summer holiday weekends. Elevations run 3,300 to 5,000 feet, so expect a few gentle grades but nothing intimidating for a motorhome. Watch for deer at dawn and dusk (especially along the Pit River), occasional cattle on open-range stretches between McArthur and Adin, and winter snow or ice from November to April when chain controls may be required on Highway 89 over Hatchet Mountain Summit. Summer afternoon thunderstorms can blow through fast. Download the Caltrans QuickMap app before you go for real-time chain controls and road conditions.

You'll find a great mix. Private parks in McArthur and Hat Creek typically offer full hookups (30/50-amp electric, water, sewer), hot showers, laundry, Wi-Fi, and dump stations on-site. McArthur-Burney Falls Memorial State Park has flush toilets, hot showers, potable water fill-up, a dump station, and a general store, but no individual hookups, so plan to use your fresh tank. Inside Lassen Volcanic National Park, Manzanita Lake has flush toilets, drinking water, and a dump station but no hookups. For dumping on a longer trip, the Burney Falls park dump station serves travelers for a small fee. Top off your fresh water in Fall River Mills before heading into Lassen, in-park fills can be slow in peak season.

Many include a TV, and a growing number offer Wi-Fi hotspots, perfect for those Lassen-area dead zones. Every passenger needs a seat-belted seat, so confirm sleeps versus seatbelts on the listing if you have a big group. Ask your host about add-on bundles, many include camp chairs, a fire-pit grill, and a stocked kitchen kit for first-time RVers.

Hosts in Fall River Mills make it easy to customize your trip. Popular add-ons include bedding and linen packages ($25 to $75), kitchen kits with pots, pans, and utensils ($25 to $50), portable BBQs ($15 to $30), bike racks, generator fuel, and pre-stocked firewood bundles. Many hosts also offer delivery to your campground if you'd rather skip the drive. Return is usually the same place and time, with a little grace for a tank-emptying stop. Message the host through the listing before booking to ask about a Burney Falls drop-off, it can save an hour of driving on arrival day.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037755194-Pre-trip-checklist-for-rentersHow does payment and the security deposit work?
Payment is simple and secure. When you book an RV rental in Fall River Mills through RVezy, your card is charged for the rental total, taxes, and any add-ons you selected, all processed safely through the platform (never cash or e-transfer to the host). A refundable security deposit, typically $500 to $1,500 depending on the RV, is placed as a temporary hold on your card a few days before pickup, separate from the booking payment. As long as you return the rig clean, undamaged, and with the agreed fuel and tank levels, the hold is released within a few days of trip end. Take time-stamped photos and a quick walkaround video at both pickup and drop-off, it's the best way to ensure a smooth deposit return.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I rent an RV in Fall River Mills during winter?
Yes, winter RV camping in the Fall River Valley is a hidden gem: snow-dusted pines, empty trails, and stargazing under some of the darkest skies in California. Daytime highs sit in the 40s and nighttime lows drop into the 20s, so look for an RV with a furnace, heated holding tanks, and a winterized water system, many local hosts list these features clearly. Shore power helps a lot: several private RV parks in the area stay open year-round with 30/50-amp hookups, and Burney Falls offers year-round camping on a first-come basis in the off-season. The Lassen Park Highway closes to through traffic from late October to late June, but you can still snowshoe and cross-country ski from the park entrances. Confirm with your host that the rig is winter-rated and ask them to demo the furnace at pickup.
