Campgrounds and RV parks near Ferndale, CA

The Victorian Village of Ferndale itself is walkable, with restaurants, a small grocery, and the Humboldt County Fairgrounds at the south edge of town. Centerville Beach lies about five miles west for tidepooling, beachcombing, and dog walking. The Lost Coast and Mattole Road give RV travelers a scenic, slower drive into Cape Mendocino country, though larger rigs should stay on Highway 101. South of town, the Avenue of the Giants runs 32 miles through old-growth redwoods in Humboldt Redwoods State Park, with short loop trails like Founders Grove and Rockefeller Loop suitable for kids. The South Fork of the Eel River offers summer swimming, fishing, and paddling when water levels drop. Fortuna, Eureka, and Arcata round out the area for groceries, fuel, breweries, and the Sequoia Park Zoo.

Ferndale has a cool coastal climate with long, wet winters and short, mild summers. Peak RV season runs from late June through mid-October, when fog often burns off by midday and rain is rare. July and August are the driest months and the most reliable for beach days, though coastal fog can hold along the Lost Coast and Centerville Beach through morning. Late spring and early fall are quieter and still pleasant, with wildflowers along the Eel River bottomland in April and May and clearer skies in September. Winter is the wet season, with the heaviest rain falling December through February and storm systems regularly tracking across the North Coast. Some seasonal state park sites close: Hidden Springs Campground in Humboldt Redwoods is typically open Memorial Day weekend through the end of September, while Burlington stays open year-round. Mattole Road and other Lost Coast access roads can wash out or close after major storms, so RV travelers should check road conditions before heading west of Ferndale in winter.

Roads into Ferndale from Highway 101 cross Fernbridge, a historic concrete arch bridge on State Route 211 that carries two lanes of traffic and handles RVs without trouble; larger rigs should use the Fernbridge route rather than the twistier Mattole Road approach. Private parks in Fortuna and along the bay generally offer full hookups, 30 and 50 amp service, and Wi-Fi, with level pull-throughs that fit larger Class A motorhomes. State park campgrounds in Humboldt Redwoods do not have electrical hookups, and several sites have length limits, so check the specific campground before booking a longer trailer or motorhome. Cell service is reliable in Ferndale, Fortuna, and Eureka but drops quickly on the Lost Coast and in deeper redwood groves. Bring layers; nights cool to the mid-40s even in summer.
