Camping near Fort Irwin, California
Fort Irwin sits in the central Mojave Desert north of Barstow, California, home to the U.S. Army's National Training Center. The installation itself is closed to the public, so RV travelers base out of nearby Yermo, Barstow, Newberry Springs, and the Tecopa area, with the wider Mojave National Preserve and Death Valley within reach.
Fort Irwin Road connects the post to I-15 at Barstow, the main supply town for groceries, fuel, propane, and RV services. Barstow / Calico KOA Holiday is the closest full-hookup family campground, located off I-15 near Calico Ghost Town. Newberry Mountain RV Park sits east along I-40 for travelers continuing toward Needles or Arizona. Deeper desert options include Cowhole Mountain in Mojave National Preserve for primitive backcountry camping, and Tecopa Hot Springs Resort and Delight's Hot Springs Resort to the north, both built around natural mineral pools on the route to Death Valley. Cell service drops quickly once off the interstate, so download maps before leaving Barstow.
Things to do near Fort Irwin
Calico Ghost Town, a restored 1880s silver-mining town northeast of Barstow, is the headline family stop, with tours, shops, and Old West reenactments. Barstow / Calico KOA Holiday sits near the ghost town entrance and offers easy access to hiking and off-roading at nearby Mule Canyon. Rainbow Basin Natural Area, north of Barstow, is known for colorful folded-rock formations and short scenic trails.
Mojave National Preserve covers more than 1.5 million acres and includes Kelso Dunes, the Lava Tube, Teutonia Peak, and Hole-in-the-Wall. Death Valley National Park lies to the north for day trips to Badwater Basin and Zabriskie Point. Tecopa Hot Springs Resort and Delight's Hot Springs Resort are the local soak stops on the Death Valley route, with natural mineral pools open to overnight guests.

Spring and fall are the practical RV seasons in the Fort Irwin area. From March through May and again from late September into November, daytime highs sit in a comfortable range for hiking, off-roading, and exploring the preserve, and wildflowers can appear after wet winters. Spring and fall are also when sites fill quickest at Barstow / Calico KOA Holiday and other I-15 parks, so booking ahead is important.
Summer is intense. Daytime highs in the central Mojave routinely exceed 100°F, and Tecopa and the lower Death Valley basins can push past 115°F. Several desert businesses reduce hours in summer, though Tecopa Hot Springs Resort itself operates year-round, with October through April being the peak booking window. Winter is mild during the day but cold at night, with occasional freezes. Most private parks stay open year-round, while higher Mojave National Preserve campgrounds at elevation can see snow and chilly overnight temperatures.
How to book campgrounds near Fort Irwin
Developed sites in Mojave National Preserve, including Hole-in-the-Wall and Mid Hills, are reserved through Recreation.gov, which replaced the older first-come system. Sites are reservable up to six months in advance on a rolling basis, with same-day reservations also allowed. Backcountry locations such as Cowhole Mountain in Mojave National Preserve are dispersed camping and do not take reservations, with a 14-day stay limit per visit.
Private parks are booked directly. Barstow / Calico KOA Holiday accepts reservations through the KOA site. Newberry Mountain RV Park, Tecopa Hot Springs Resort, and Delight's Hot Springs Resort are reserved through their own websites. For Tecopa, reservations are strongly recommended during the October to April peak season.
What to expect
Expect a working desert, not a manicured resort corridor. Roads to and from Fort Irwin, including Fort Irwin Road and the I-15 connection at Barstow, are wide and low-traffic, which suits first-time RV drivers, but blowing sand, sudden wind gusts, and rapid weather changes are common.
Barstow / Calico KOA Holiday offers full-hookup RV sites, cabins, tent sites, a seasonal pool, and a pet area. Newberry Mountain RV Park provides a quieter I-40 stop with hookups. Mojave National Preserve sites are basic, with picnic tables, fire rings, and vault toilets, and no hookups; the road to Mid Hills is unpaved and not recommended for large RVs or trailers. Tecopa and Delight's hot springs resorts focus on the mineral pools, with limited supplies on-site, so groceries should be purchased in Barstow or Pahrump.
