Day trips fan out in every direction. Northbound on Highway 18 climbs the Rim of the World Scenic Byway to Lake Arrowhead and Big Bear Lake, both inside the San Bernardino National Forest. Southbound on I-215 reaches Lake Perris, a reservoir formed by Perris Dam that serves as the southern terminus of the California State Water Project. The lake supports swimming, shore, pier, and boat fishing, sailing, waterskiing, a designated scuba area, hiking, biking, equestrian trails, and rock climbing south of the dam. Closer to camp, families can ride the Santa Ana River Trail, visit the California Citrus State Historic Park in Riverside, or run east on I-10 to Joshua Tree National Park for a long day in the desert.

The Inland Empire has a Mediterranean climate with a long dry season. Summers run hot: daytime highs in Riverside and San Bernardino commonly push into the low 90s Fahrenheit in July and August, and inland valleys can exceed 100. Tree cover at lake-side parks is limited, so extra shade canopies are highly recommended. Renters traveling in midsummer should plan for early-morning activities, mid-day rest, and rigs with strong air conditioning. Late spring and early fall are the easiest windows: warm days, cool nights, and minimal rain. Winter brings the wet season, with storms arriving from the Pacific between November and March and February typically the rainiest month. Snow does not fall in the valley but does close higher passes in the San Bernardino Mountains during storms. Campers who visit Lake Perris in the cooler months will generally find an uncrowded park outside of holiday weekends. Fire restrictions can be imposed at any time in the surrounding national forest, so check the latest status before any backcountry trip.

Private parks around Grand Terrace are paved, level, and built for big rigs, with full hookups, laundry, and Wi-Fi standard. Expect close-set sites and freeway hum in exchange for easy access and predictable utilities. Lake Perris is a different experience: a total of 413 campsites open all year, with sites that can accommodate RVs and trailers up to 31 feet and 254 sites with electric and water hookups. Boat launch fees are not included in the camping reservation; visitors bringing a boat should be prepared to pay daily launching fees upon arrival, including exit day, whether the vessel is launched or not. Due to the goldspotted oak borer, no oak firewood is allowed into Lake Perris; wood can be purchased inside the park, and other species such as pine or eucalyptus are still permitted.
