Camping near Highgrove, California
Highgrove is an unincorporated community in Riverside County, sitting between the city of Riverside and San Bernardino at roughly 950 feet of elevation. The location puts RV travelers within a short drive of full-hookup parks in the Inland Empire and reservation campgrounds at nearby lakes and national forest land.
Close-in options favor convenience over scenery. Terrace Village RV Park and Reche Canyon Mobile Estate and RV Park serve travelers wanting paved sites near Highgrove itself, while Mission RV Park and San Bernardino RV Park offer additional hookup capacity within a short drive. For a more traditional outdoor experience, Lake Perris State Recreational Area Horse Camp sits roughly 20 miles southeast and provides equestrian and family camping at the state recreation area. Highway access via I-215, I-10, and SR-60 makes day trips practical to the San Bernardino Mountains, Joshua Tree, and the Pacific coast, so Highgrove works well as a hub stay rather than a single-destination base.
Things to do near Highgrove
Lake Perris State Recreation Area is the primary outdoor draw. The reservoir offers swimming, fishing for rainbow trout, catfish and Alabama spotted bass, boating, sailing, waterskiing, a scuba area, and trails for hikers, bikers and equestrians, plus a rock climbing area south of the dam. The Ya'i Heki' Regional Indian Museum is on site. In the San Bernardino National Forest, the Big Bear Lake area, Lake Arrowhead, and Barton Flats provide cooler mountain recreation within about an hour. Closer to Highgrove, downtown Riverside offers the Mission Inn historic district, the UCR Botanic Gardens, and Mount Rubidoux for short hikes. Day trips reach Joshua Tree National Park to the east and the Pacific beaches at Huntington and Newport to the west.

Highgrove sits in a hot-summer Mediterranean climate. Summers are hot and sunny, winters are mild and wet, with temperatures ranging from an average low near 46°F in December to an average high above 90°F in August. Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows for RV travel, with daytime highs in the 70s and 80s and limited rainfall. Mid-March to mid-April and mid-October to mid-November are typically the most pleasant periods to visit.
Summer heat is the main planning factor. Lake Perris is very crowded during the summer months due to its proximity to major population centers, and inland Riverside County regularly sees triple-digit afternoons. Winter brings the bulk of the area's modest rainfall and cool nights that can dip near freezing on the coldest mornings, but daytime weather is usually pleasant. Off-season visitors between December and February generally find an uncrowded park with comfortable midday conditions.

My 2 kids loved the trailer, we got it delivered with all the optionals included so It was a breeze. Everything worked great - ac & heater where required a couple if times. Water tank was full but we ran out after 3 days even thou we used the camping showers, so I would plan accordingly if you are camping without hookups. I’d definitely rent from Daniel again.

I rented Jonathan's trailer to take my family to the Lake Perris Campground. Jonathan was super helpful, walking me through the camper trailer and giving me great advice on how to set everything up. Even during our trip, he was incredibly responsive whenever I had questions. I will definitely rent from him again!

The trailer worked well for us, especially when a cold spell brought temperatures below freezing for couple of nights in the end of May. It was easy to tow up into the mountains and back. Jonathan is a great host. He is very helpful and accommodating, quick to answer questions, flexible with pick-up and drop-off times. Will rent from him again.

Booking and reservations
Private parks near Highgrove, including Terrace Village RV Park, Reche Canyon Mobile Estate and RV Park, Mission RV Park, and San Bernardino RV Park, take reservations directly through the operator. Many cater to monthly tenants, so call ahead to confirm short-stay availability and rig length limits. For Lake Perris State Recreational Area Horse Camp and the main Lake Perris campground, reservations go through ReserveCalifornia or by phone at 1-800-444-7275. The system uses a rolling window that opens six months in advance at 8 a.m. Pacific time. Sites can accommodate RVs and trailers up to 31 feet. For mountain campgrounds in the San Bernardino National Forest such as Barton Flats, Serrano and Dogwood, book through Recreation.gov, generally up to six months ahead. Summer weekends and holidays fill earliest.
What to expect on site
Highgrove-area private RV parks are urban in character: paved pads, full hookups, laundry, and quick access to grocery and fuel, with limited tree cover. Expect freeway noise at parks close to I-215 or I-10. At Lake Perris, each site includes a picnic table and fire ring with grill, and 254 sites have electric and water hookups, with showers, a dump station, and a boat ramp on site. Many loops have shade trees, but summer afternoons get very hot and an extra shade canopy is recommended. Campfires are only permitted in park-provided fire rings. No oak firewood is allowed into the park due to the goldspotted oak borer; wood can be purchased inside the park, and other species such as pine or eucalyptus are still allowed.
