Surfing defines the city, and the pier at Main Street is the focal point for watching longboarders, walking the boardwalk, and reaching the downtown shops and restaurants. The paved coastal trail runs for miles in both directions and is rideable straight from beachfront campsites; campers can walk or bike along 8.5 miles of paved beachside trail that connects Bolsa Chica State Beach to nearby Huntington State Beach. The Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve, across PCH from the beach, is a free wetlands loop popular with birders and families with younger kids.
