Spring and fall are the prime windows. Ricardo Campground is especially popular on spring and fall weekends, when daytime temperatures are mild and wildflowers may appear after wet winters. Spring is also the high season for Kern River rafting, when snowmelt feeds reliable flows and outfitters in Kernville are fully booked. Summer is hot. Daytime highs in the Indian Wells Valley routinely top 100°F, and shade is scarce at desert sites like Ricardo. River and lake campgrounds at Lake Isabella stay busy through the summer because the water provides relief and elevation is slightly higher. The desert campground draws steady visits on mild winter days while midweek and summer stays are quieter. Winter brings cool nights, occasional rain, and the possibility of light snow at higher elevations around the Kern River Valley. Most private RV parks in the Lake Isabella area operate year-round, but holiday weekends fill quickly. Wind and dust can be challenging at exposed desert sites, particularly in spring.

Expect a clear split between primitive desert camping and developed RV parks.
