Campgrounds and RV parks near Kernville, CA

Whitewater rafting drives the local economy. The Upper Kern, a free-flowing run fed by Sierra snowmelt, offers Class III and IV trips above Kernville, while the Lower Kern below Lake Isabella Dam runs into mid-summer on dam releases. Commercial outfitters in town book half-day, full-day, and multi-day trips. Fishing for trout is open year-round on Lake Isabella, which covers more than 11,000 surface acres when full. The Cannell Meadow National Recreation Trail begins just north of Kernville and climbs into the high country above the canyon. Day trips reach the giant sequoia groves of the Giant Sequoia National Monument, the Trail of 100 Giants, and granite features like The Needles. Kayaking, tubing, mountain biking, and rock climbing round out the menu.

Camping is a year-round option in the lower valley, but the experience changes sharply with the season. Spring is the biggest draw. Snowmelt drives the Upper Kern into its peak rafting window from late April into early June, with the river running highest and outfitters operating at full capacity. Summer brings hot, dry weather, low humidity, and reliable Lower Kern raft trips that continue on dam-controlled flows through Labor Day. Daytime highs in July routinely exceed 90 F, so shaded riverside sites and hookups for air conditioning matter. Fall is the quietest stretch, with warm days, cool nights, and easier reservations. Some outfitters run trips into late September or early November when flows allow. Winter is cool rather than harsh at valley elevation, with overnight lows around freezing and most rain arriving between December and March. Sherman Pass Road and the Western Divide Highway close seasonally for snow, limiting access to the higher country above the canyon.

Kernville is a small mountain town with a compact grid of shops, outfitters, and restaurants centered on Riverside Park. RV-relevant services, including grocery, fuel, and propane, are available in town or a short drive away in Lake Isabella. Forest Service campgrounds along the Upper Kern typically provide picnic tables, fire rings, and vault toilets, with drinking water at some sites but not all, and no hookups. Trailer length limits vary, with some sites capped near 30 feet and others, such as Fairview, accommodating rigs up to 45 feet. Private parks in town offer full hookups, showers, and longer pull-throughs. Cell coverage is reasonable in Kernville and degrades quickly upriver. Summer fire restrictions are common, and campfire permits are required for stoves and barbecues outside developed campgrounds. Bears and rattlesnakes are present in the canyon, so food storage and trail awareness matter.
