Surfing dominates the coastline. Doheny State Beach has a longtime longboard break and a five-acre lawn for picnics, and San Clemente State Beach sits near surf spots like T-Street and Trestles. Crystal Cove State Park offers tide-pool viewing areas, miles of trails through Moro Canyon, and access to the Historic District cottages. The 1.5-mile Nature Trail at San Mateo Campground leads to Trestles Beach. Newport Dunes Resort adds a calm lagoon, kayak and paddleboard rentals, and a marina with a boat launch. Most state-park campgrounds in this area are dry sites with no electric or water hookups.
