Campgrounds and RV parks near Lemon Grove, CA

From a base near Lemon Grove, the San Diego Trolley provides direct rail access to downtown, the Gaslamp Quarter, Old Town, and Mission Valley, which keeps tow vehicles parked at the campsite. Day trips include Balboa Park and the San Diego Zoo, the USS Midway Museum, Coronado, and the beaches at Mission Bay and Pacific Beach. Inland, Mission Trails Regional Park offers hiking on Cowles Mountain and along the San Diego River. Santee Lakes Recreation Preserve has seven stocked lakes for fishing, pedal boat rentals, and over five miles of trails, with access included for registered campers. Families staying at the KOA in Chula Vista can use on-site pools and the Sand Castle Cafe without leaving the resort.

The San Diego area is one of the few places in the continental United States where RV camping works in every month of the year. Winter, from December through February, is the wettest season, but rainfall is still modest by national standards and daytime temperatures usually sit in the mid-60s Fahrenheit. This is shoulder season for most local parks, and snowbird travelers from colder states fill long-stay sites at Sunland's San Diego RV Resort and similar properties from roughly November through March. Spring brings reliably mild, dry weather and is a strong window for sightseeing. Summer, from June through August, is peak season: school holidays, county fair traffic, and beach weather push weekend availability tight at the KOA and at Santee Lakes, where waterfront sites book months ahead. Early fall, especially September and October, often has the warmest afternoons of the year and lighter crowds once schools return to session.

Parks in this corridor are urban or suburban RV resorts rather than backcountry campgrounds. Expect paved or concrete pads, full hookups with 30 and 50 amp electric, on-site Wi-Fi of variable quality, and tight site spacing typical of San Diego County. Most properties have pools, laundry, and a camp store. Santee Lakes offers 300 full-hookup sites around seven lakes, with lakefront and creekside loops. The San Diego Metro KOA Resort offers RV sites, deluxe cabins, a year-round pool, and an on-site cafe. Freeway noise is common given proximity to I-8 and I-805, so requesting an interior site is worthwhile. Tent camping is limited at several properties, and big-rig access is generally good.
