Camping near Loleta, California
Loleta sits on the lower Eel River delta in Humboldt County, about ten miles south of Eureka and just inland from the Pacific. The town makes a practical base for RV travelers exploring Humboldt Bay, the Lost Coast, Ferndale's Victorian district, and the redwood parks south along Highway 101. Private RV parks in the immediate area cover most rig sizes and hookup needs. Riverwalk RV Park and River's Edge RV Park sit close to the Eel River corridor, Johnny's Marina & RV Park provides bay and harbor access, Shoreline RV Park offers a coastal-leaning stop, and Redwood Coast Cabins & RV Resort pairs RV sites with cabin options for mixed groups.
State and county campgrounds add to the mix. Humboldt Redwoods State Park has more than 250 developed family camp sites at Albee Creek, Burlington, and Hidden Springs Campgrounds, roughly forty minutes south along the Avenue of the Giants. Humboldt County operates additional campgrounds at Van Duzen, Big Lagoon, and along Humboldt Bay. Together these options cover full-hookup convenience and old-growth redwood settings within a short drive.
Things to do around Loleta
The Avenue of the Giants, a scenic drive through old-growth redwood forest, runs south of Loleta and anchors most day trips. Families can hike short loops such as Founders Grove and Bull Creek Flats inside Humboldt Redwoods State Park, then swim or fish the South Fork of the Eel River when summer flows are low. Closer to town, the Loleta Bakery and the historic main street make easy stops, and Ferndale sits minutes away across the river. Coastal options include beachcombing and clamming along Humboldt Bay, kayaking from Johnny's Marina & RV Park, and wildlife viewing at the Humboldt Bay National Wildlife Refuge. Wildlife around the redwood parks includes black-tailed deer, river otters, and numerous bird species.

The North Coast has a true marine climate, so seasonal swings are mild but rainfall is highly seasonal. In Eureka, the summers are cool, dry, and mostly clear and the winters are long, cold, wet, windy, and mostly cloudy, with temperatures typically varying from 42°F to 64°F over the year. July and August bring the best chance of dry weather, though coastal fog is common in the mornings and can linger near the bay. Late spring and early fall are quieter shoulder seasons with reasonable weather and easier reservations.
Winter is the wet season, with abundant rain from Pacific fronts and occasional flooding along the lower Eel River. Burlington Campground is the only campground in Humboldt Redwoods State Park that is open year-round, sitting on the Avenue of the Giants near the visitor center. Hidden Springs Campground is open from Memorial Day through Labor Day weekend. Albee Creek typically operates seasonally from late spring into early fall, and several county and private parks scale back services in winter.
How to book campgrounds near Loleta
Private parks in Loleta, including Riverwalk RV Park, Johnny's Marina & RV Park, Shoreline RV Park, River's Edge RV Park, and Redwood Coast Cabins & RV Resort, take reservations directly by phone or through their websites. Booking several weeks ahead is wise for summer weekends and holidays.
California State Parks use a single reservation system. Visitors can reserve campsites and lodging six months in advance from the current date, with bookings extending from arrival to departure based on availability and the park's maximum stay rules. Inventory becomes available on ReserveCalifornia.com each day at 8 a.m. PST. Reservations can also be made by calling 1-800-444-PARK (7275). For Humboldt County parks, including Big Lagoon, Clam Beach, Samoa Boat Ramp, and Van Duzen, the County Parks Office handles reservations at 707-445-7651.
What to expect
Plan for cool, damp coastal conditions even in summer; layers, rain shells, and warm bedding pay off. Cell coverage varies sharply between locations, so download offline maps before leaving town. The Humboldt Redwoods campgrounds do not offer sites for RVs over 24 feet in length and trailers over 24 feet in length. There are no electrical hook-ups in any camp site, and the park does not have a dump station. Private parks around Loleta typically provide full hookups, dump access, showers, and laundry, making them the better fit for larger rigs and longer stays. Roads on the Avenue of the Giants are paved but narrow with tight turns under heavy canopy, so drive slowly and scout pull-throughs. Bears, raccoons, and deer are common, so store food in vehicles or provided lockers.

help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Loleta?
Absolutely, the Redwood Coast is one of the most dog-loving regions in California. On RVezy, just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter and you'll find plenty of pet-friendly RV rental Loleta options, from compact campervans to family-sized Class Cs. Once you've picked a pup-approved rig, point the leash toward Clam Beach County Park north of Eureka (dogs allowed on-leash), the Hammond Coastal Trail in McKinleyville, or the Humboldt Bay National Wildlife Refuge auto tour route. Note that most California State Parks (including Humboldt Redwoods) restrict dogs to paved campsite areas and roads, but Avenue of the Giants pullouts are perfect for a quick stretch. Pack a towel, the beaches get sandy fast.
fws.gov/refuge/humboldt-bayCan the RV be delivered to me in Loleta?
Yes, RV delivery in Loleta is one of the smartest ways to start your trip, especially if it is your first time renting an RV. Many RVezy hosts in Humboldt County will drive the rig to your campground, vacation rental, or the Humboldt County Fairgrounds in nearby Ferndale, then handle the full setup and walkthrough so you never have to back a 28-foot motorhome into a redwood-shaded site. Use the Delivery filter when searching, then message the host with your destination. Popular drop spots include Burlington Campground, Benbow KOA, and Samoa Boat Ramp County Park. Delivery fees vary by distance, and for many travelers it is well worth it.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038438853-Delivery-optionsHow far can I drive on a Loleta RV trip, and what are mileage policies like?

From Loleta, popular drives are short: Avenue of the Giants is about 30 miles south, Redwood National Park's Prairie Creek section is 60 miles north, Shelter Cove on the Lost Coast is 60 miles southwest, Crescent City is 90 miles north, and the Oregon border sits around 110 miles away. Pro tip: planning a one-way to Crater Lake? Message hosts directly to ask.
nps.gov/redw/planyourvisit/directions.htmWhere should I stay during my RV camping Loleta adventure?
You're spoiled for choice when it comes to RV camping Loleta-style. The best campgrounds near Loleta include the Humboldt County Fairgrounds RV Park in Ferndale (full hookups, walking distance to a charming Victorian downtown), Riverwalk RV Park & Campground in Fortuna (next to Eel River Brewing), Benbow KOA in Garberville (pool, golf course, and Eel River access), Burlington Campground inside Humboldt Redwoods State Park (sleep beneath 300-foot redwoods), and Giant Redwoods RV & Cabin Destination on Avenue of the Giants. For coast lovers, Samoa Boat Ramp County Park offers oceanfront sites just 20 minutes away. Book state park sites on ReserveCalifornia and county parks through the Humboldt County website.
parks.ca.gov/?page_id=425When is the best time to take an RV trip from Loleta?
Here's the local secret: Loleta's coastal climate is mild year-round, so the best time depends on what you want. Late May through early October brings the driest, sunniest stretch, with highs in the upper 60s to low 70s and cool nights around 50°F (perfect for sleeping). September is the sweet spot, fewer crowds, warmer ocean fog burns off faster, and the redwoods are quiet. Winters are wet (the area gets about 28 inches of rain) but never snowy, with highs near 54°F, making it a cozy off-season escape for storm watchers and surfers. Pro tip: pack layers any month, coastal fog can drop temperatures 15 degrees in an hour.
weather.gov/eka/I've never driven an RV before. Will I be okay starting in Loleta?
You've got this, and Loleta is honestly one of the friendliest places in California for first time renting an RV. Highway 101 through Humboldt County is wide, well-paved, and far less stressful than urban California freeways. Every RVezy host provides a hands-on orientation at pickup: how to operate the propane, water, slide-outs, and dump system, plus tips specific to their rig. You can message your host with questions anytime, and 24/7 roadside assistance is built into every booking. For total beginners, choose a smaller Class C or campervan rental Loleta listing and let the host deliver and set it up. Within an hour, you'll feel like a pro.
dmv.ca.gov/portal/handbook/california-driver-handbook/What happens if something goes wrong with the RV during my trip?
Take a deep breath, you are never alone out there. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, so a flat tire on Highway 101, a dead battery at Burlington Campground, or a lockout near Shelter Cove is just one phone call away from help. Your host is also reachable directly through the RVezy app for quick questions like how to reset the water pump. For anything bigger, RVezy customer support has your back before, during, and after the trip. Snap photos at pickup so any issues are documented, and save the roadside number in your phone before leaving Loleta.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Loleta RV rental across state lines or into Canada or Mexico?
Yes to plenty of road trip dreams. An RV road trip from Loleta is perfect for crossing into Oregon (the border is about 110 miles north, with Crater Lake roughly 6 hours away) and many hosts welcome trips throughout the western US. Just message the host before booking to confirm Oregon, Washington, Nevada, or Arizona travel, and to discuss any extra mileage. Canada may be allowed by some hosts depending on their insurance, so ask first. One firm rule: travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because insurance coverage doesn't extend there. Popular cross-state runs include Crater Lake, the Oregon Coast, Lassen Volcanic National Park, and Bend, Oregon.
oregon.gov/odot/Pages/index.aspxWhat about fuel costs for a motorhome rental in Loleta?
Let's budget smart. A motorhome rental Loleta will typically get 8 to 12 mpg for Class A and Class C rigs, 14 to 20 mpg for campervans, and your tow vehicle's normal mpg minus a few when pulling a travel trailer. Gas in Humboldt County usually runs 30 to 50 cents per gallon above the national average, so check stations in Fortuna, Eureka, or McKinleyville (typically cheaper than Garberville or remote Highway 101 stops). For a 5-day, 400-mile loop covering Avenue of the Giants, Eureka, and Prairie Creek, plan roughly $180 to $260 in fuel for a Class C. Pro tip: top off in Eureka before heading down the Lost Coast, options are sparse out there.
energy.ca.gov/data-reports/energy-almanac/transportation-energy/california-retail-fuel-outlet-annual-reportingHow far in advance should I book campgrounds near Loleta?
The earlier the better, especially for summer. California State Parks like Humboldt Redwoods (Burlington, Hidden Springs, Albee Creek) open reservations 6 months in advance through ReserveCalifornia, and prime July and August weekends often book the first day they're released. Private parks like Benbow KOA and Riverwalk RV Park accept reservations 9 to 12 months out. For shoulder season (May, September, October) trips, 4 to 8 weeks ahead is usually fine. National park sites like Elk Prairie at Prairie Creek Redwoods also use Recreation.gov on a 6-month rolling window. Pro tip: midweek availability is dramatically better, and Humboldt County Fairgrounds RV Park often has same-week openings.
reservecalifornia.com/What are the driving conditions like around Loleta?
Driving here is honestly part of the fun. Highway 101 between Loleta, Eureka, and Fortuna is a wide, gentle four-lane highway, easy for any RV. The biggest local conditions to know: coastal fog can roll in fast (slow down, use low beams), winter rain can be heavy from November to March, and the Avenue of the Giants is narrow with tight curves through 300-foot redwoods, so take it slow and enjoy the cathedral feel. The Lost Coast roads to Shelter Cove and Mattole are steep, winding, and not recommended for RVs over 25 feet. Pro tip: avoid driving Highway 36 east of Fortuna in any large rig, it's beautiful but brutally tight.
quickmap.dot.ca.gov/What amenities can I expect at campgrounds near Loleta?
You'll find a great mix. Private parks like Riverwalk RV Park in Fortuna, Benbow KOA, and the Humboldt County Fairgrounds RV Park offer full hookups (water, 30/50-amp electric, sewer), Wi-Fi, showers, and laundry. State park campgrounds like Burlington in Humboldt Redwoods are more rustic: fire rings, picnic tables, potable water, and flush toilets, but no hookups, so you'll rely on your RV's tanks. Dump stations are available at Humboldt County Fairgrounds, Riverwalk, and Eureka KOA. Fresh water fill-ups are easy at any full-hookup park or most state park entrance stations. Pro tip: cell service is spotty in the redwoods, so download maps offline before leaving Loleta or Eureka.
parks.ca.gov/?page_id=21599What's inside a typical RV rental in Loleta?
You will be impressed by how complete these rigs are. Most RV rentals in Loleta come fully equipped: real beds (queen master, bunks, or convertible dinettes), a kitchen with fridge/freezer, propane stove, microwave, sink and cookware, a bathroom with toilet and shower, dining table, heating, and seatbelted seating for travel. Many include a TV, Bluetooth stereo, outdoor awning, and camp chairs. A campervan rental in Loleta will be more compact but still includes a bed, kitchenette, and often a portable toilet. Wi-Fi and generators vary by listing, so check the listing details or message the host. Many Humboldt hosts include linens, towels, and a starter kitchen kit free.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Loleta,CaliforniaWhat add-ons and pickup options do Loleta RV hosts offer?
There are plenty of ways to customize your trip. When you rent an RV in Loleta, common add-ons include bedding and towel packages, kitchen kits, camp chairs and tables, generators, propane fills, bike racks, kayaks or paddleboards, pet fees, and dump-and-refill service so you return the RV ready to go. Pickup is usually at the host's home in Loleta, Ferndale, Fortuna, or Eureka, with delivery available to most Humboldt County campgrounds. Mileage policies vary, anywhere from 100 miles per day included up to truly unlimited, so compare listings. Bundling delivery, setup, and dump service often costs less than you would think and turns the whole trip into a true vacation.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Loleta,CaliforniaHow does payment and the security deposit work?
It is simple and secure. When you book an RV rental in Loleta on RVezy, you pay through the platform with a credit or debit card, never directly to the host. Your total (nightly rate, fees, taxes, protection package) is locked in upfront, with no surprises. A refundable security deposit is held separately on your card before the trip starts to cover incidentals like minor damage, excess mileage, or returning with empty tanks. Amounts vary by RV but typically range from $500 to $1,500. As long as you return the rig in the shape you got it, the hold is released after the trip. Do a thorough photo walkaround at pickup and dropoff, it protects everyone.
