Campgrounds and RV parks near Lucerne Valley, CA

Off-road riding draws most desert visitors. The Johnson Valley OHV Area covers a varied landscape of dry lake beds, sandy washes, and rocky hills, with terrain suited to everyone from novices to expert rock crawlers. Lucerne Valley is the closest fuel and supply stop before heading in, since no services exist inside the riding area. Up the mountain, Big Bear Lake supports boating, fishing, paddling, and swimming in summer, plus downhill skiing and snowboarding at Snow Summit and Bear Mountain in winter. The Alpine Pedal Path is a paved lakeside route popular with families and dog walkers. Hikers can use Pacific Crest Trail crossings near Big Bear, or take dirt roads into Holcomb Valley for rock-crawling, gold-rush history sites, and quiet pine-forest walking.

The King of the Hammers race draws roughly 80,000 spectators and a sprawling tent-and-RV encampment to Means Dry Lake during a nine-day window each winter.

Plan for elevation changes and active wildlife. Big Bear Lake sits above 6,700 feet, so nights stay cool even in summer and snow is possible into spring. Black bears are common around Big Bear year-round, and bear-resistant food storage is required at most forest campgrounds. Cell coverage drops off quickly outside the lake basin and the town of Lucerne Valley. Roads vary widely. The route between Big Bear and Lucerne Valley uses paved Highway 18, but Forest Service roads in the Holcomb Valley area turn to dirt and can be rough for low-clearance RVs. Fill the tank, water, and pantry before leaving town. Campfire permits are required for any fire or stove use on national forest land, and seasonal fire restrictions are common during dry periods.
