Campgrounds near McKinleyville
McKinleyville sits on California's Redwood Coast in Humboldt County, between the Mad River and the Pacific. The town works well as an RV base for trips into Redwood National and State Parks, known for the world's tallest trees, and for shorter drives south to the redwood groves along the Avenue of the Giants.
Private RV options in and around town include Mad River Rapids RV Park, Redwood Coast Cabins & RV Resort, Emerald Forest Cabins and RV, Shoreline RV Park, and View Crest Lodge. These properties cluster along the Highway 101 corridor between McKinleyville and Trinidad, giving travelers quick access to Clam Beach, Moonstone Beach, and the Hammond Trail. State park campgrounds suited to smaller rigs sit farther afield: Humboldt Redwoods State Park alone has more than 250 developed family sites at Albee Creek, Burlington, and Hidden Springs Campgrounds, roughly an hour south.
Things to do near McKinleyville
The Hammond Trail is a multi-use hiking, biking, and equestrian segment of the California Coastal Trail managed by Humboldt County, running from the Arcata Bottoms north to Clam Beach County Park in McKinleyville. A steel pedestrian and bicycle bridge crosses the Mad River at its south end. Clam Beach, Moonstone Beach, and Mad River Beach offer easy ocean access for tide pooling and beachcombing. Trinidad Head, a short drive north, has a loop walk around the headland with harbor and sea lion views. Day trips reach Redwood National and State Parks for old-growth hikes, Roosevelt elk viewing at Prairie Creek, and the Avenue of the Giants in Humboldt Redwoods State Park to the south.

The Redwood Coast is wet, cool, and busy on a different calendar than inland California. Summers are cool, dry, and mostly clear; winters are long, cool, wet, and mostly cloudy. Peak RV demand runs from late spring through early fall, with the heaviest pressure on park campgrounds in summer. Park sites fill up quickly, especially from May through September, so reserving as early as possible is advised.
Seasonal closures matter for trip planning. At Humboldt Redwoods State Park, Burlington Campground near the visitor center on the Avenue of the Giants is open year-round, while Hidden Springs Campground is usually open Memorial Day through the end of September. Inside Redwood National and State Parks, Tall Trees Trailhead permits are required year-round, and Gold Bluffs Beach Day-use permits are required from May 15 to September 15. Winter brings river flooding risk, coastal storms, and persistent fog; spring and fall offer quieter sites and shoulder-season availability.
How to book near McKinleyville
Reservations on the Redwood Coast split across three systems. Private RV parks in and near McKinleyville, such as Mad River Rapids RV Park and Redwood Coast Cabins & RV Resort, book directly through the property or its listing platform. The four developed state park campgrounds inside Redwood National and State Parks are reserved through ReserveCalifornia, with bookings accepted up to six months in advance on a rolling daily window and as late as two days before arrival, depending on availability. Humboldt Redwoods State Park to the south uses the same six-month window through ReserveCalifornia, with last-minute bookings up to 48 hours before arrival. National Park Service day-use permits for Tall Trees Trailhead and Gold Bluffs Beach are handled by the park reservation system and can be made up to 24 hours in advance.
What to expect at McKinleyville campgrounds
Expect cool, damp coastal weather even in midsummer. Coastal fog is normal, and overnight lows stay in the 40s and low 50s much of the year, so a heated RV and warm bedding pay off. Sites near the coast can be tight and shaded; inland redwood campgrounds have low overhead clearance and narrow access roads. Humboldt Redwoods State Park does not offer sites for RVs or trailers over 24 feet, has no electrical hookups, and does not have a dump station. Black bears are present in surrounding parks, so use the provided food lockers. Cell coverage is patchy once off Highway 101.
