Camping near Modjeska, California
Modjeska is an unincorporated canyon community on the western slope of the Santa Ana Mountains in eastern Orange County, bordered on most sides by the Cleveland National Forest. The location puts RV travelers within easy reach of three very different camping environments: private full-hookup parks in the inland valleys, a state-park campground on the Pacific coast, and rustic forest sites along the Ortega Highway corridor.
Closest options sit in the foothills and along the Santa Ana River. Canyon RV Park occupies the developed portion of Featherly Regional Park in Anaheim, with the Santa Ana River running through the property and full hookups at all sites. Glen Ivy RV Park and Glen Eden Nudist Resort offer inland stays toward Corona, while Ortega Oaks RV Park and Campground sits along Highway 74 inside the Cleveland National Forest. For an ocean-side base, Crystal Cove State Park's Moro Campground is roughly 45 minutes southwest on Pacific Coast Highway. Most travelers use one of these as a hub for day trips into the canyon, the forest, and the Orange County beaches.
Things to do around Modjeska
The canyon is best known for the Tucker Wildlife Sanctuary, a 12-acre nonprofit nature preserve at the foot of Modjeska Peak operated by the Environmental Nature Center and open to the public on Saturdays and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Trails on the sanctuary grounds suit beginners and families, while routes climbing into the Cleveland National Forest reach Modjeska Peak and Santiago Peak for stronger hikers. Wildlife in the area includes hawks, owls, deer, bobcats, and occasional mountain lions, so standard food-storage and trail precautions apply.
History travelers can visit Arden, the Helena Modjeska Historic House and Gardens, operated by OC Parks. For a beach day, Crystal Cove State Park offers 3.2 miles of coastline, tide pools, an offshore underwater park, and a backcountry of more than 2,400 undeveloped acres and 15 miles of trails. The Santa Ana River Trail, a paved multi-use path of more than 50 miles, runs alongside Canyon RV Park and connects inland Orange County to Huntington Beach.

- winter
December - February
68° / 46°F 70 mmWettest season; most annual rain falls in these months
The Cleveland National Forest notes that the best season for hiking is during the cooler fall, winter, and spring months, since many trails travel through open chaparral and become very hot in summer. That same logic applies to RV travel in the canyon: spring and fall offer comfortable daytime temperatures, lower fire risk, and lighter crowds at inland sites.
Winter is the wettest stretch, with most of the area's roughly 12 inches of annual rain falling between December and February. Storms can briefly close forest roads and trigger flood watches in the lower canyons, but coastal campgrounds usually remain open and the Moro Campground at Crystal Cove operates year-round.
Summer brings dry heat inland and persistent coastal fog on the shore, especially on June and July mornings. Coastal sites at Moro Campground book out months ahead for summer weekends. Fire season typically peaks from late summer into fall, and the Santa Ana winds that sweep down from the desert in autumn can prompt red-flag warnings and campfire restrictions across the Cleveland National Forest.

I rented Jonathan's trailer to take my family to the Lake Perris Campground. Jonathan was super helpful, walking me through the camper trailer and giving me great advice on how to set everything up. Even during our trip, he was incredibly responsive whenever I had questions. I will definitely rent from him again!
Peter F. - Jul 2026
The trailer worked well for us, especially when a cold spell brought temperatures below freezing for couple of nights in the end of May. It was easy to tow up into the mountains and back. Jonathan is a great host. He is very helpful and accommodating, quick to answer questions, flexible with pick-up and drop-off times. Will rent from him again.

How to book campgrounds near Modjeska
Reservation systems vary by operator, so plan by campground type. Crystal Cove State Park's Moro Campground is booked through ReserveCalifornia, online at reservecalifornia.com or by phone at 800-444-7275, on a rolling window up to six months before arrival. RV size limits are 25 feet for non-hookup tent sites and 38 feet for hookup RV sites, and rigs are measured on entry.
Canyon RV Park inside Featherly Regional Park takes reservations directly at 714-637-0210 or through canyonrvpark.com, with 140 full-hookup RV sites and ten log cabins; the park is open year-round and recommends booking ahead for peak season and holiday weekends. Ortega Oaks RV Park and Campground is a private facility open all year and is reserved directly with the park. Glen Ivy RV Park and Glen Eden Nudist Resort also book directly through their operators. Cleveland National Forest campgrounds along the Ortega Highway are reservable through Recreation.gov.
What to expect on the ground
Expect mixed terrain within a short drive. Canyon RV Park sits at low elevation along the Santa Ana River with full hookups, a seasonal pool, and access to the Santa Ana River Trail right outside the gate. Ortega Oaks RV Park and Campground is higher and more forested, surrounded by oaks inside the Cleveland National Forest, and works well for travelers heading between the coast and Lake Elsinore.
Moro Campground at Crystal Cove is terraced on coastal bluffs, with most of its roughly 60 sites capturing some ocean view; traditional wood and charcoal campfires are not permitted and only self-contained gas or propane fires are allowed. Cell coverage is reliable near the coast and inland valleys but spotty inside Modjeska Canyon itself. Wood and charcoal fires are never allowed outside developed campgrounds or picnic sites on the Cleveland National Forest, and fire restrictions can tighten quickly during Santa Ana wind events.

rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Modjeska,CaliforniaWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Modjeska, California?
Good news: your everyday driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Modjeska. California does not require a commercial or special endorsement for motorhomes under 40 feet or trailers under 10,000 pounds, which covers nearly every rental on RVezy. Renters generally need to be at least 25 years old, and your ID is verified securely through the RVezy platform during booking. Visiting from abroad? Pair your valid foreign license with an International Driving Permit issued in your home country before you fly in. No DMV visit, no test, just pack up and head into the Santa Ana Mountains.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat protection and roadside help come with my Modjeska RV rental?
Every RV rental in Modjeska booked through RVezy comes with a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can hit Santiago Canyon Road with peace of mind. The protection plan covers physical damage to the RV during your trip, and you choose your coverage level at checkout, not the host. If you get a flat on Live Oak Canyon Road or need a jump start at O'Neill Regional Park, one call gets help dispatched any hour of the day. It is the financial cushion that lets first-time renters relax and enjoy the canyon.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat happens if I need to cancel my Modjeska RV trip?
Booking is low risk because RVezy, not the individual host, sets the cancellation policy for every rental in Modjeska. There is a money-back grace period right after you book, and additional protections apply for major disruptions such as wildfire closures in the Cleveland National Forest or severe weather affecting Orange County. The exact refund depends on how far out your trip is, so start a booking to review the cancellation terms before you confirm. If a host cancels, RVezy refunds the guest or provides credits, and support is available before, during, and after your trip.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a Modjeska RV rental?
Absolutely, and Modjeska is one of the most dog-friendly corners of Orange County. Many RVezy hosts welcome pets, just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter when you search for a pet-friendly RV rental in Modjeska. Once you're set up, O'Neill Regional Park allows leashed dogs in the Arroyo campground and on most of its 23 miles of trails, which is rare for OC parks (nearby Caspers Wilderness Park does not allow dogs, so plan accordingly). Bring a tie-out, plenty of water for warm canyon afternoons, and waste bags. Pro tip: the shaded oak groves at O'Neill keep paws cool even when temperatures climb into the 80s.
ocparks.com/oneillCan the RV be delivered to my campsite or driveway in Modjeska?
Yes, RV delivery in Modjeska is one of the most popular options on RVezy, and it's a game changer if you're a first-time renter or just don't want to drive a 30-foot rig down Santiago Canyon Road. Many hosts will deliver right to O'Neill Regional Park's Arroyo Campground, your home driveway in Modjeska Canyon, or other nearby spots like Caspers Wilderness Park. They'll level the RV, hook up power and water, and walk you through every system before they leave. Use the Delivery filter on RVezy, then message the host with your exact address or campsite number to confirm the fee, which is usually based on mileage.
ocparks.com/oneillHow far can I travel on a Modjeska RV trip, and what's the mileage policy?
Modjeska is a fantastic launchpad because so many iconic California destinations are within an easy day's drive. Joshua Tree National Park is about 130 miles east, Big Bear Lake is roughly 90 miles north, San Diego is 85 miles south, Los Angeles is 50 miles northwest, and Anza-Borrego Desert State Park is about 110 miles southeast. Most RVezy hosts include a daily mileage allowance (often 100 to 150 miles per day) with low per-mile fees after that, and some offer RV rental with unlimited mileage. Pro tip: if you're planning a longer RV road trip from Modjeska, message the host and ask about a flat-rate mileage upgrade before booking.
nps.gov/jotr/planyourvisit/directions.htmWhere are the best campgrounds near Modjeska for RV camping?
You're spoiled for choice when it comes to RV camping near Modjeska. O'Neill Regional Park's Arroyo Campground is the closest, just minutes away in Trabuco Canyon, with 79 oak-shaded sites, a free dump station, hot showers, and rates around $20 per night plus a small utility fee. Caspers Wilderness Park, about 25 minutes south off Highway 74, offers 8,000 acres of wilderness camping (no dogs allowed). Featherly Regional Park along the Santa Ana River has full hookups, and Newport Dunes Waterfront Resort, about 30 miles west, offers beachside luxury sites. Pro tip: O'Neill's Arroyo loop fills up weekends, so reserve 2 to 3 months out.
ocparks.com/oneillWhen is the best time of year for an RV trip in Modjeska?
Modjeska is a year-round destination thanks to Southern California's mild Mediterranean climate, but the sweet spot is October through May. Fall and winter daytime highs hover between 65 and 78 degrees Fahrenheit, with crisp canyon mornings and minimal rain. Spring (March through May) brings wildflowers across the Santa Ana Mountains and flowing water in Trabuco and Hickey Creeks. Summers can climb into the 90s inland, so if you visit June through August, plan early hikes and run the RV's air conditioning during the hottest hours. Pro tip: the week after a winter rain is magical in Modjeska Canyon, but trails close for three days after storms, so plan accordingly.
weather.gov/sgx/I've never rented an RV before. Will I be okay driving in Modjeska?
You've got this, and Modjeska is a great place for your first time renting an RV. Every RVezy host provides a hands-on orientation at pickup that covers driving, leveling, hookups, the awning, the toilet, and propane, no guessing required. The roads into Modjeska Canyon (Santiago Canyon Road and Modjeska Canyon Road) are paved, two-lane, and very manageable, though they wind a bit near the canyon mouth, so take it slow and use pullouts. If a smaller rig sounds better, filter for a Class B campervan rental in Modjeska or a compact travel trailer. And remember, you can message your host any time during the trip if a question pops up.
dot.ca.gov/programs/traffic-operations/legal-truck-accessWhat if something breaks down during my Modjeska RV trip?
You are never on your own. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance, so whether you have a flat tire on Santiago Canyon Road, a dead battery at O'Neill Regional Park, or a propane issue near the Cleveland National Forest, one call gets help moving toward you. Your host is also just a message away for quick questions like resetting the inverter or relighting the water heater pilot. RVezy customer support is reachable around the clock to handle anything bigger. Pro tip: save the roadside number to your phone before pickup, and snap a photo of the RV's VIN and license plate for faster dispatch.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Modjeska RV rental across state lines or into Mexico?
Interstate travel is welcome on most RVezy rentals from Modjeska, and the location is ideal for it. Popular routes include Modjeska to Las Vegas (about 275 miles via I-15), Modjeska to the Grand Canyon (around 490 miles), and Modjeska up the Pacific Coast Highway through Big Sur. Travel into Mexico is not allowed on RVezy rentals because insurance and protection coverage do not extend across the border, so plan to stay stateside. Just message your host before booking to confirm any state-by-state preferences and to discuss longer mileage packages. Pro tip: a Zion and Bryce Canyon loop from Modjeska is doable in 7 to 10 days.
nps.gov/grca/planyourvisit/directions.htmWhat should I budget for fuel on a Modjeska RV trip?
Fuel is the biggest variable cost, but it's easy to plan for. Most Class C motorhomes get 8 to 12 miles per gallon, campervans get 15 to 20, and travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle. California gas prices in Orange County typically run higher than the national average, so budget around $5.00 to $5.50 per gallon as of 2026. For a 300-mile weekend loop in a Class C, expect roughly $130 to $180 in fuel. Pro tip: fill up in Lake Forest or Mission Viejo before heading up into Modjeska Canyon, prices climb noticeably once you head toward Idyllwild or Big Bear, and Costco in Tustin is consistently the cheapest option nearby.
energy.ca.gov/data-reports/energy-almanac/transportation-energy/california-retail-fuel-outlet-annual-reportingHow far in advance should I book campgrounds near Modjeska?
For peak season weekends (Memorial Day through Labor Day) you'll want to reserve 3 to 6 months out, especially for O'Neill Regional Park and Caspers Wilderness Park, which both use the OC Parks reservation system at ocparks.com. State parks like Crystal Cove and Doheny open reservations 6 months in advance through ReserveCalifornia, and those coastal sites can vanish in minutes. For weekday or off-season stays in Modjeska Canyon's surrounding parks, 2 to 4 weeks is usually enough. Pro tip: set a ReserveCalifornia alert for cancellations, beach-adjacent OC campgrounds often free up 48 hours before arrival when other travelers adjust plans.
reservecalifornia.com/What are driving conditions like around Modjeska Canyon?
Driving in and out of Modjeska is gentler than most people expect. Santiago Canyon Road is a well-maintained two-lane highway with gradual curves connecting Modjeska to the 241 Toll Road, Orange, and Irvine. Modjeska Canyon Road itself narrows as it enters the canyon, so take it slow with a larger rig and watch for cyclists, who are extremely common on weekend mornings. Avoid driving through downtown Los Angeles or the 405 during rush hour (6 to 10 a.m. and 3 to 7 p.m.). After heavy rain, watch for rockfall warnings in the canyon. Pro tip: the 241 and 261 toll roads accept FasTrak or send a license plate bill, way faster than the 5 freeway in summer.
quickmap.dot.ca.gov/What hookups and amenities will I find at campgrounds near Modjeska?
Local campgrounds range from rustic to resort-style. O'Neill Regional Park (closest to Modjeska) has no individual hookups but offers threaded water spigots, a free dump station, flush toilets, and free hot showers, perfect for self-contained RVs. Caspers Wilderness Park is similar, with potable water and a dump station but no hookups. For full 30/50-amp electric, water, and sewer, head to Featherly Regional Park in Anaheim, Orangeland RV Park, or Newport Dunes on the coast. Most Orange County RV parks also have wifi, laundry, and pools. Pro tip: confirm your RV's freshwater tank is filled before driving up to O'Neill, the spigot-to-site distance varies and a 25-foot drinking-water hose is the right length.
ocparks.com/parks/oneill/campingWhat amenities can I expect inside a Modjeska RV rental?
Most motorhome rentals in Modjeska come fully equipped so you can roll into O'Neill Regional Park and start cooking dinner within an hour. Expect real beds (queen or king in many Class C and Class A rigs), a kitchen with a fridge, freezer, propane stove, microwave, and sink, a bathroom with toilet and shower, air conditioning, a furnace, and a generator or solar setup. Many include a flat-screen TV, Bluetooth stereo, and an outdoor awning, and some hosts offer wifi hotspots as an add-on. Every RV on RVezy has seatbelts for travel occupants, just confirm the number of belted seats matches your group when booking. Linens and kitchen kits are often included or available as low-cost add-ons.
rvezy.com/What popular add-ons and pickup options should I know about?
RVezy hosts in Modjeska offer a menu of helpful add-ons that can make your trip smoother. Common extras include linen and towel packages ($30 to $75), kitchen kits with pots, pans, and dishes ($30 to $60), camp chairs and outdoor tables ($15 to $30), portable BBQs, generators, bike racks, and pet packages. Delivery and setup is the most popular add-on, especially for travelers flying into John Wayne Airport (SNA), just 20 minutes from Modjeska. Pickup is typically self-serve at the host's address, with a 30 to 60 minute walkthrough included. Mileage policies and per-mile overage fees are shown on each listing. Pro tip: bundle delivery, setup, and a propane top-off for the easiest possible first-timer experience.
ocair.com/How does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple and fully handled inside RVezy, no cash or checks change hands with the host. You pay the rental cost, protection plan, and any add-ons securely through the platform when you book. The refundable security deposit is separate from your booking payment and is placed as a hold on your card before pickup (amounts vary by RV, commonly $500 to $1,500). The hold is released after the trip once the host confirms the RV was returned in the same condition. To avoid deposit issues, take date-stamped photos at pickup and drop-off, return the RV with the agreed fuel and propane levels, and dump tanks if your contract requires it.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksWhat's a must-do local experience for a Modjeska RV trip?
Don't leave without visiting Tucker Wildlife Sanctuary at the end of Modjeska Canyon Road, where you can watch hummingbirds, acorn woodpeckers, and California quail from a shaded observation patio. Pair that with a visit to Arden, the historic home of famed Polish actress Helena Modjeska (the canyon's namesake), now a National Historic Landmark managed by OC Parks. Cap the day with a stop at Cook's Corner, the legendary biker bar and burger joint at the canyon's mouth. Pro tip: weekday mornings at Tucker are quietest, and you can park a campervan or smaller motorhome easily in the dirt lot.
