Campgrounds near Myrtletown, California
Myrtletown sits on the eastern edge of Eureka in Humboldt County, on California's Redwood Coast. It puts RV travelers within minutes of Humboldt Bay and a short drive of old-growth redwood forests, the Avenue of the Giants, and the rugged Lost Coast. The area is a practical base for families because most services, groceries, fuel, and dump stations are clustered along the U.S. 101 corridor through Eureka and Arcata.
Private RV parks dominate the immediate area and most offer full hookups suitable for larger rigs. Shoreline RV Park sits near Old Town Eureka on the bay side of the highway. Johnny's Marina & RV Park is a working-marina park on Humboldt Bay. Redwood Coast Cabins & RV Resort lies along U.S. 101 between Eureka and Arcata and offers mixed cabin and RV accommodations. Mad River Rapids RV Park is set near the Mad River north of Arcata, and Riverwalk RV Park lies along the Eel River south toward Fortuna. State park campgrounds at Prairie Creek (Elk Prairie and Gold Bluffs Beach) sit about fifty miles north along U.S. 101.
Things to do near Myrtletown
Old Town Eureka, just west of Myrtletown, offers walkable Victorian streets, restaurants, and a working waterfront. Humboldt Bay supports kayaking, oyster farms, and harbor cruises. North on U.S. 101, Arcata adds a community forest with redwood trails and a marsh wildlife sanctuary. Day trips fan out in three directions: north to Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park where Roosevelt elk herds graze the meadows, south to Humboldt Redwoods State Park and the Avenue of the Giants drive along the Eel River, and west to Pacific beaches like Clam Beach, Trinidad State Beach, and Moonstone. Families can visit the Sequoia Park Zoo in Eureka, tide pools at low tide, and the Hammond Trail for biking. Fern Canyon, used as a filming location for parts of Jurassic Park 2, sits within Prairie Creek about an hour and a half north.

December - February
54° / 41°F 170 mmWettest season; Pacific storms can close redwood park roads
The Redwood Coast climate is cool and marine year-round, not the hot, dry California most visitors expect. Summer, from June through August, brings the heaviest tourism and the highest campground occupancy. Coastal fog is common most summer mornings and burns off by midday inland; coastal sites can stay overcast all day. Booking eight to twelve weeks ahead is reasonable for popular summer weekends.
Fall, September through November, is often the clearest, warmest stretch on the coast and a strong shoulder season for RV travel. Winter, December through February, is the wettest period, with frequent Pacific storms, occasional wind warnings, and the risk of road closures or downed trees in the redwood parks. Some state park loops close or reduce services in winter, so verify status before arriving. Spring is wet early and dries through May, with rivers running high and trails muddy in the redwood interior.
How to book campgrounds in the area
Private parks near Myrtletown, including Shoreline RV Park, Redwood Coast Cabins & RV Resort, Johnny's Marina & RV Park, Mad River Rapids RV Park, and Riverwalk RV Park, generally take reservations directly by phone or through their own websites. Two-night minimums are common on summer weekends and holidays. For California state parks in the region, including Prairie Creek (Elk Prairie and Gold Bluffs Beach), Humboldt Redwoods, and the Del Norte parks farther north, reservations are made through ReserveCalifornia.com. The system uses a rolling window: inventory opens six months in advance of the arrival date at 8 a.m. Pacific time, and bookings can be made up to two days before arrival, subject to availability. County parks such as Big Lagoon and Clam Beach are handled separately by the Humboldt County Parks office.
What to expect on arrival
Most private RV parks near Myrtletown are compact, paved or graveled, and oriented toward easy in-and-out access from U.S. 101. Expect tight turns at some bay-front and river-front parks; rigs over about 35 feet should confirm site length when booking. Full hookups, Wi-Fi, and laundry are standard at the larger parks, but cell coverage drops quickly once roads head inland into the redwoods. Coastal sites are exposed to wind and damp marine air, so awnings and outdoor rugs may not stay dry. Wildlife is active: deer and raccoons are routine, and Roosevelt elk are common in the redwood parks to the north. Food storage rules apply in state and national park campgrounds. Mosquitoes are limited, but no-see-ums can appear near wetlands at dusk.
